The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

JUST-BENTO_bookcover.jpg

The giveaway is now closed. The winners will be contacted and announced later this week. Thank you everyone for entering!

To commemorate the new edition of The Just Bento Cookbook, I’m going to give away 2 signed copies! The new edition has the exact same content as the previous edition, but just has a slightly different form factor (a wee bit smaller (but not much), and no dust jacket (but the cover is printed in full color)). I am very glad it has been reprinted again; as I mentioned before, the original publisher closed its doors in March, but the publishing rights were picked up by another division of the same parent company, Kodansha USA. So anyway, here’s your chance to get your hands on one! It’s too late to get the book to the winners before the holidays, but it should arrive in the New Year when you’re all ready to tackle those healthy/frugal eating resolutions.

All you have to do is leave a comment to this post (not an email reply if you are reading this by email: click on the title to come to site, and post your comment entry here!) Be sure to put your email address in the appropriate box (it will be hidden from prying spammers, not to worry) so that I can contact you if you win. In the body of your comment, state the following:

  • where you are located in the world (everyone is eligible, as long as you live somewhere where mail can reach you)
  • your gender, profession and general age bracket (you can be vague about the age ^_^ I’m just a curious bunny about who my readers are)
  • who you make bentos for primarily - or plan to make bentos for if you havent’ started
  • (optional) What you want to see on JustBento. A specific recipe? A how-to? I’m all ears!

Only one entry/comment per person please! The deadline for posting your comment is 23:59:59 of Monday, December 19th CET (Central European Time). Two winners will be chosen at random, and I’ll contact them next week and announce them as soon as they’ve responded.

So…I look forward to seeing your comments! Good luck!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Wooo Wooo a giveaway of the book that is on my wish-list :D happy :D

I'm from Spain, near Barcelona to be more specific.

I'm 24 years old and I love to make bentos for myself when it's spring and summer and take them to eat at a park with my best friend. When I live with my boyfriend, I hope he would let me make them for him too.

I'd love to see if there's anyway to take off something soup-like :D

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I am an over-50 woman from Texas, USA, who has the great good fortune to have a beautiful adopted son of half-Japanese descent and a beloved aunt-by-marriage from Japan. When my son first began exploring his ethnic heritage, we ventured into the world of sushi-making. Our first attempts were sloppy, but we soon got the hang of things and now can roll those puppies out nicely. We stick to veggie rolls and eat the fish at restaurants. I found justbento.com when we decided to branch out. As chief bento-maker and pescatarian mom, I'm eternally grateful for the yummy ideas on this site. Tofu frittata and tofu nuggets are my favorites, but this morning I attempted tamagoyaki with results similar to my first sushi attempt. I substituted stevia for the sugar. Yummy, but more than a little wobbly! I have no doubt that this keeper will straighten itself out with practice, and next time I plan to insert nori between the layers. I envision tamagoyaki madness: caviar, spinach leaves, ultra thin mushroom slices, etc. between the layers. Nothing's better than bento!

I am a 43 y/o female from Rhode Island, USA who is a caregiver and a former lab assistant. I have always wanted to make bentos for myself to help control my eating portions. I use some of the bento suggestions when making my Father meals (he has dementia and he enjoys "happy bites",) and sometimes for my nieces when I am baby sitting them. One of my nieces has many food allergies so the rice heavy bentos help with her dietary needs. I enjoy and encourage the food combinations that you sometimes demonstrate that are unusual here in America.

Hi. I'm a 43 year old mom of a 4 1/2 year old boy and a 21 month old girl from Napa, CA. I hope to make bento lunches for my picky son as his preschool doesn't provide lunch. I am looking to make simple and delicious food without dairy (he's allergic to it).

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Greetings! I hail from the great white North, aka Canada. I'm 26 years old and I am a historical interpreter at a living history museum. I make bentos for myself mostly, although I would like to make them for people in the future once I get better at them. I think they are really fun to make and also a great way to eat healthier. I really enjoy trying new foods and new styles of cooking so bentos allow me to do this. I would love to see instructions on how to hold chopsticks. I know you already have an article on chopstick etiquette, but if you have posted one on how to actually use them, I must have missed it.

Me and the wife like have just started doing some bentos and we are trying to incorporate our children. There are 6 of them and only two are adventurous eaters, like myself. My wife has opened up to more things over the years. I would like to see some reviews about bento boxes, the items used in the creation.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hello,
I've only just discovered the beauty of bento fillings, after having my curiosity peaked buy the variety of bento boxes available online. I'm 37, and do volunteer work because being bipolar makes it hard to hold down a regular job. Because I spend half of my life depressed, I am always searching for new ways to bring happiness into my life...sitting down to a beautiful bento would do just that! I also recently had my stomach stapled and as such I have to find a whole new way of eating, and little bits of this and that seem to suit my new stomach a whole lot better than my traditional diet of a sandwich or a bowl of pasta for lunch...again bentos look like the answer to all my problems. I have delighted in reading and trying out your recipies so far, and know that I would find so many more inspirational ideas in your beautiful book. I love books and would dearly love to own a signed copy of such an inspirational volume.
Many many thanks for all the wonderful work you do!
Kate

p.s. oops I forgot to tell you a few things. I am a female from Australia. I live alone so I would be making bentos for myself, and perhaps a friend to share. I unfortunately can't eat rice, so I am always looking for other staples to substitute, so more recipies that provide the same nourishment and filling that rice does would be great :)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm so happy to hear that JustBento is available again. I've checked it out at the library several times. It's the #1 thing on my Christmas list this year. As you know the book hasn't been available on Amazon, so we'll see if it turns up or not this year. Everything I've feed to my family from recipes from the website have been huge hits with my family. My girls love it when I make them "surprise" lunches, because I always go bento and they never know what little treasures will await them at lunch time. I would LOVE one of your signed copies of this amazing book. Thanks so much for such an inspirational and yummy way to lose weight.
Great luck and happiness be yours in the new year!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hello :)

I'm Katerina (32) and I live in Germany at the moment. I work as a freelance interpreter and translator and make bento boxes mostly for myself, but I'm proud to say that I have invested others with the bento passion as well :).

I'm pretty happy with what I have been seeing here till now, but easy and primarily fast recipes are my favourite :)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hello !

I am very interested by this cookbook about bento's as I got bitten by the bento passion in June, therefore I submit my mail ^_^
I live in Paris, I am a girl, I am 24 years old, and I study at the university to become a school teacher (from kindergarten to 5th grade).
As I was saying before, during the "Japan Expo" which is held every year in Paris, I discovered bento, and from this moment, I bought on the Bento & co's website and then I started cooking some bentos.
At first it was more for the visual pleasure, and the fact that it is cheaper and tastier than the self of my university, but then I realised it would be also a good way to control what I eat, as I have a lot of weight to lose.
Anyways I hope you are feeling better (I think I understood you had some health issues, from your facebook page)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hello ! Greetings from Poland..
I'm 31 and I'm mom of 3 yrs old lovely boy who doesn't like to eat much :|
so I though that making cute (and healthy) food will convince him to eat more ;] that's why I'm mainly looking for some cute recipes for young kids ;]
I'm a lawyer (now on maternity leave) and in future I guess I'll make some for myself too (when I'll be back in office)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi Maki!

I am from the Philippines.
I am female, 30 years old, working as a manager.
I make bentos primarily for myself, and sometimes for my daughter.
I love seeing bento tricks from you here in JustBento. The simplest ones are the best, especially for beginners like me.

:)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

What a wonderful idea the Bento boxes are. I am a grandmother from South Australia and I no longer make packed lunches for my children, but I regularly prepare lunches for my grandchildren (parents are shift workers) and it makes lunch a healthy surprise everyday. No boring sandwiches when Grannie's making Bento lunches :-)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm from France, Paris but I'm now living in Belgium for my work.

I'm a 26 years woman and I work as an IT engineer, specialized in systems and databases.
I've been reading your blogs (Just Bento and Just Hungry) for a long time.

I used to make bentos everyday for myself when I was at the University. Since I graduated in last September and moved to Belgium, I haven't done any bentos... But I plan on making them again soon!

I would like to see more vegetarian bento ideas and I really like the guy's bentos :)
Well... your site is already a great source of inspiration!

Take care of yourself!
Gaelle

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Please enter me in the drawing for The Just Bento Cookbook! I am living in S.E. Georgia, USA, female, retired. I make bento just for me :) Before moving here I lived in Northern California and it was easy to buy bento gear and asian food but now living where I do it is only possible to acquire supplies online. Your site keeps me motivated with your great information, recipes and tips. One problem I have had however is the trick to peeling those itsy bitsy quail eggs ~ keep up the wonderful work!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi...I'm Diane Legaspi and I live in Las Piñas City, Philippines, female and 30 years old. I'm currently looking for a job. I love cooking, and I want to learn fun and easy to cook meals. I'm lived with my uncle, his wife and two kids (10 and 8 years old). I usually cook for the kids, and I want them to enjoy the food as well as get them eat healthy food.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Ooh, a giveaway :)

I'm currently living in the UK, in West London. I'm a female software engineer, in my mid-30s, commuting backwards and forwards to Reading every day on the train. I make bentos for myself four days a week (on Fridays, we go to the pub for lunch). I recently bought myself a two tier bento box which fits much better into my laptop back than the old plastic take-away boxes I had been using!

I've love to see more ideas on this site for how to make leftovers into exciting bento items - particularly the sort of things one might have leftover after a roast dinner! We had a crippling over-catering issue when we had friends round for roast beef on Sunday, and I've been trying to make the leftovers into bento items all week (with varying success! the bubble-and-squeak fritters worked really well, the sliced cold roast potato was very underwhelming!)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Oi

Im from Denmark, Male, 24 years old, and a Ph.D. student. I want to start making bentos for myself so I have something nice to eat at work ^^

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Location: England

Gender: Female
Profession: Receptionist
Age: 23

I make bentos for my friends and family.
When I visit them I bring round a big box.
It makes me feel great and also gives me some input on my recipes.

I would like more recipes that don't have egg in them when baking
as I can't eat egg.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi, i'm from and currently in Canada, female, 22, and a full time student. I make bentos for myself that are generally pretty simple and more snack-based so I can fill up the hours between home and class... which fit really awkwardly into actual meal times, such as 7am and 12pm, meaning I'll get really hungry but I can't justify a full -out gorgefest. I love the ones that are really simple, can be made in bulk, and are of course, healthy. I like the little side dishes that I'll eat as a main veg or meat, simple notes such as those on dashi, and stew!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Located in Australia. I'm a 20yr old female university student making bentos for my boyfriend and I in the shared dormitory kitchens...

I'd love to hear about any tips you have for creating bentos with limited resources. Because it's a shared kitchen there's only so much storage space for kitchenware and I'm limited to 1 frypan, 2 bowls, a cutting board and not enough containers to store more than a day of leftovers. Although this is probably not relevant for the majority of your readers, I'd love to hear any tips if you have any... If some staple dishes can be microwave cooked instead of fried perhaps?

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Best! =)

Hello!
I live in the Netherlands, Amsterdam to be exact.
I'm 30 years and working as a medical doctor in radiology.
Primarily make bento's for myself for lunch (hospital food is also terrible here)
I would love to see more asian types of bento's (not just the Japanese but also maybe thai/indian/chinese)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hey,

My Name is Anja (19) and I live in Germany. I'm a first semester student of Grafic Design, so i mainly make bentos for myself. But i have also done two or three for my boyfriend^^ My fellow students are always curious of what i have cooked. Some say I am nuts (they say it must take long to make a lunch like this, but i think they are jealous!).

I think the recipes on this site are very great (till now everything i tried was great) but i have problems by finding them here. Somehow i cant handle with the way its assorted here... sorry ;)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

yay, a giveaway :D. I'm a bento lover, and a cookbook lover, so I would be thrilled to win :D.

where you are located in the world : I'm in France, north of France exactly.

your gender, profession and general age bracket : I'm female, I was a French teacher and now I'm a photographer and retouching artist, changing my career again soon because I'm starting to elaborate a jewelry shop project. I'm 35 years old, well, I will be in the beginning of January.

who you make bentos for primarily : for my man, who is a fervent aïkido practitioner and always hungry when he has some week-end special sessions :D. I also do bentos for us both when eating outdoors, as a romantic pique-nique :D. It is not a tradition but we also love to make a couple-elaborate-bento for TV diner evenings.
(optional) What you want to see on JustBento : as a person living with diabetes I love all the recipes with low carb ingredients, and all the tips and tricks to keep the vegetable great and appetizing, even if they are cooked the day before for example. All the tips and tricks for diabetes friendly bentos are good for me (I know there's already some on this blog :) .)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

hello there! this is kiki, a 36yo "girl" from italy.
bentos are not popular in italy yet, i believe i'm one of the few who owns original accessories and all, it's a real passion of mine.

i love making bentos for me and my beau, i prepare them the evening for the next day, we have lunch together as we work really close :)

we are both vegetarians, so obviosuly that's what i'd love to see more on justbento, and i must say i love how much you stress out the importance of good, healthy bentos, not simply *pretty ones*!

more how-to's are always welcome, especially for those like me that can only learn through websites :)

thank you for all and keep up the extra-good work!
kiki

I agree! You inspired me to make healthy and beautiful lunches instead of takeout. I look forward to opening my little boxes everyday. And lost 22 pounds since February just by eating better!

I'd love a signed copy of your book!

Happy holidays!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I live in Rhodes island, Usa. I am 32 and work as an office manager. I have a 12 year old who loves Bentley and a 2 year old and baby on the way that I hope will enjoy them too!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Yay! A giveaway! :)

I am a 30-year-old female from Turkey. I am a PhD student and a research assistant. I make bentos for myself, and although I'd like to make them everyday, I end up with making bentos only about 2-3 times a week. I'm hoping that having a bento book will help me increase the days I bring bento to work.

My main challenge with bento is making attractive bentos quickly. It takes me forever to make a nice looking bento, and if I don't have much time, I end up heaping everything in straight layers. So, a visual organization how-to would be great! :)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Fantastic!

My name is Benoit, I'm a 24 year old law graduate, living in southwestern France. My girlfriend got me started on bentos as a way to force me to consume more fruits and vegetables, and I must admit i've become hooked.

As for something i'd love to see on just bento, would be a recipe for mini chinese steam buns...

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hello,

*My name is Maggie. From Kuala Lumpur ,Malaysia.
*I am a girl,20 year old, work as a designer.
*I always make bentos for myself to bring to work, and sometimes , I make for my boy friend <3.
*I hope can have some easy and save time recipe, because every time i prepare bento, i have to spend an hour, it's not easy for me.^^

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I got really curious and read through the comments to see what kind of people reads the blog and was somehow surprised (though I think I shouldn't be) to see that out of the 17 comments, only one was a male. Well then, I'll be the second.

I'm a 26 years old (27 soon) temporary graphics designer working for a company in Brunei that runs the local Coffee Bean and a grillery.

I make bentos mainly for myself when I feel like experimenting with food.

I can't think off the top of my head what I'd like to see on this site because anything I have thought of wanting to try, I've managed to find here somehow.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I think you are actually the third guy so far ^_^

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Haha yeah, I was reading the comments and by the time I actually posted a comment, I became third =(

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA. I'm a woman in my mid-forties, and work for a non-profit focussed on child welfare. I make bento for myself every workday, and for my older daughter on days that she doesn't like the school lunch. (My younger daughter wants bento every day, but she is too young to keep track of a lunchbox, so she gets school lunch every day. When she's older, I'll make some for her, too.)

I enjoy seeing ways to reuse leftovers, but I like all the entries.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi, I am a 28 ye old wife and mom to two girls. I work as an administrative assistant here in Iowa (midwest area of the US. I've always enjoyed saving money by bringing my own lunch to work and am still a newbie in terms of making bento. I love seeing all your recipes as well as photos. I would love to see venison recipes since we have an abundance of deer and hunting season is winding down. Thanks for the giveway!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I am 46 and a housewife...no children...8 chickens. I live in Texas. I make Bentos for my husband! He likes it. :) He even posted a picture on Facebook when I made a his-n-her charaben out of his deviled eggs on the day of our 18th Anniversary. I am just getting the hang of it and I haven't branched out much. My biggest problem is with creativity. I like the recipes on your site and the practical ideas and how-to's. Your photos are also very inspiring.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Oh, wow, I would love to win a signed copy. Your book has been in my Amazon wish list since I found your blog...just waiting until after the rush of Holidays to order it. A signed copy would be SO much better! Fingers crossed.

- Home is both Texas and Idaho, but right now I'm living in Germany.
- I'm female, a writer & homemaker, mid-fifties
- I want to make bentos for my husband to take to work, and for me, too, since I often forget to eat lunch, and then I'm starving and eat quick poor choices. I haven't started yet...that's my New Year Resolution for 2012.

The only suggestions I can think of have to do with me being so new to Bentos. I'd love it if you could give some really basic info on making bentos in the blog sometimes, like portion sizes, Veg/fruit/carb to protein ratios, that sort of thing, and also, how you fit bento making into your daily life. Some real basic from scratch recipes would be nice, too, as we move a lot, and I'm not always able to locate stores to buy specialty foods right away.

I love what you've been doing at JustBento, personally. You got me interested in doing bentos by just being you.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Upstate NY!
Female, I work for a gym and I'm 28!
I plan to make Bentos for myself, my girlfriend and my family :)
As far as JustBento suggestions.... I'm not really sure, because I love the foods you come up with :) More sweets!!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm in my early 40s, am a writer and computer applications instructor (meaning: I teach a LOT of Excel) and I live in New Hampshire.

I make bento for myself, my husband and my teenaged son. There are specific reasons why I do so for each other than the fact it is a fun hobby. I think the fun part is really the primary motivator. It IS food in a box, after all.

My husband: He has commented that when he opens a bento in the middle of the day, especially when it's a rough one, that he feels like it is a connection to home. This amused me mightily, as I've seen similar comments about bento on sites by Japanese authors, and I'm sure he hasn't read them.

My son: Because he's not going to make as healthy a meal for himself as I'd make for him. Also he likes it. He's funny and kind of deadpan sometimes. He commented to me at the beginning of the school year when I asked him if he still wanted me to make him bento, "Of course I do. It helps me get better grades. No, seriously. See my serious face?"

Me: I'm self-employed. If I make a bento for myself the night before, I eat a reasonably healthy lunch. If I don't, I'm likely to snack through the afternoon.

As far as articles I'd like to see: principles of repurposing leftovers, world-wide recipes for bento, nostalgia bento stories (love the ones you've written), and how to satisfy teenaged boy appetites in a bento box!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

My name is Chad and I live in Melbourne Florida. I am a male, mid 40's web developer. I want to start making bentos for my wife and me.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

HI Maki!

I live in Egypt.

I am a 25 year old female Engineer who is intrigued by Bentos but haven't formally started. I prep lunch for myself and the hubby usually for work days, and the lunchbox will have leftovers usually, but not made in a proper 'bento' fashion.

I like to promote healthy home made food in my region, which is quickly being devoured [pun intended :)] into the fast food world. We are now the 5th fattest country on earth! I want to learn more about the culture and idea behind the bento, and maybe promote some 'Egyptianized' versions since we love rice as well. Plus learn how to make the super cute layouts!

Sending positive thoughts and hope you recover quickly!

Konnichiwa!

I live in Birmingham (UK), I'm 27 years old and (although I am a qualified translator) I'm currently unemployed and looking for work (damn recession!).

I have loved Japanese cuisine for a while now but bento boxes have been a revelation for me: delicious and healthy! I love the variety of bentos and this website has shown how creative you can get. I hope that these bento recipes will help me lose some of my winter weight.

Please keep up the good work!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi!

I'm a 40-something mom from Nashville, and am interested in learning more about how to make bentos for my girls' lunches. They both take lunch to school everyday and I'm trying to come up with fun ways to keep it interesting - and get them to try new things. Thanks for the giveaway!
