Well, it's one way of making sure I stick to my exercise...

I've signed up for the Race for Life! http://www.raceforlife.org/
I'm running in memory of my MiL who died of breast cancer in Dec 2007.

I know it's not exactly a marathon, but it's been a while since I was built for running! This means I'll have to kick my healthy bento and exercise challenge up a notch or two. I'm excited, but nervous as well. I have been known to set myself unrealistic goals and completely fail to reach them! This isn't. I have 4 months to get myself ready and am confident as long as I put the effort in I should be ok.

Anyone else running this year?

Thats a really nice idea. But a little bit far for me to go there. And I'm not good in running, but walking would be ok. A really great motivation I'm almost shure that this have to work

I love this idea! I still hope to do a rowing challenge this spring. Must get over there and start! And must clean off rowing machine first..

What a wonderful motivator! My challenge right now is Get Packed, but once we are settled I am going to seriously look for fitness challenges! (I don't know...climb the Matterhorn? heh...)

I don't think it's beyond anyone really. Loads of people walk the distance - 5k isn't that much after all. I'm aiming to properly run it in well under 30 mins.

Clarissa, maybe there is something similar in Germany you could enter.
mosaica, get that rowing machine out!
maki, extreme packing lol. We will be moving in 2-3 months so I feel your pain *nods sagely*

Way to go Tofuwarrior! I did it last year with 12 colleagues from our department and I was the only one who managed to run the entire way. I did it in a very slow 39 minutes, but I was proud anyways since I am 41 and only vaguely fit.

Good luck with your training! :)

Thanks Courtney, maybe I am being ambitious then.... I was hoping for 30 mins or less! I'm not much younger (37) and not even vaguely fit!

Nothing wrong with ambition. I think it's actually very doable! :)

If you have an mp3 player, there is a great site that has a free downloadable music podcasts that will gradually help you increase your speed. Google podrunner intervals and you should find it. There is a 9 week one specifically designed for 5K.

I had plans to try a 10K with a friend and had started using these but she hurt herself and I got lazy. (sigh) Maybe we will try to get motivated again since spring is coming. :)

Re: Well, it's one way of making sure I stick to my ...

5km is basically 3 miles. A 10 minute mile is a very reasonable goal for many adult runners. An 8 minute mile is a bit harder, but still pretty doable. A 6 minute mile is pushing yourself pretty hard, and might not be a good goal for some people. The distance isn't unreasonable either. Most adults can go 3 miles in a day without problems.

Start by seeing how far you can walk and run now, and whether you can do the same distance the next day. You're less likely to stick with it if you're exhausted the next day. If you can already walk 3 miles, it's *much* easier to work up to running 3 miles.

I'll be doing the same kind of thing while I rehab my knee. To handle my normal errands, I need to be able to walk 7 or 8 miles in one day, or bike 30 miles. And I'd really *like* to be able to bike more than 60 miles in a day... that opens up a lot of day trips that I'd otherwise not get to do.

Thanks Torrilin. That's really useful. I sometimes walk the 2.7 miles to work (I've checked it!) and I know I can walk 3 miles in 50 mins.

I'm doing a race for life too! It's really good inspiration to do cardio training!

I've alot of respect for those who go out and raise money for a cause close to thier heart. I'm running for the hospital who saved my Dad from a tumor in his spine. I wan't to be able to help them towards a special spinal injury bed : )

Wish you all the luck in the world Tofu!!!

Those mp3s sound like a great idea!
