Pasta Salad with Potential (vegan/vegetarian/omnivorous)

Last night, on a whim, I decided that we needed a taste of spring at the Basil household. So, I got my partner to help and we whipped up three kinds of pasta salad for bento this week and some for the freezer, too. Besides all that, it only took about 20 minutes, from start to stop. It's a great (and cheap!) bento box filler, but pasta salad is a "by feel" food for me, so I'm kinda guessing on amounts. I'd hate to post a recipe only to find out that no one liked it because I didn't bother to measure ingredients or figure out calorie counts!

Does anyone else find this happening to them? How do you deal with it? I really don't want to make up another 8 cups of three kinds of pasta salad just so I can use measuring cups this time!

For the record, I'm working on vegan and omnivorous versions, so if you have suggestions, I'd appreciate them!

Mh... I do not make pasta salats that often, as I do not eat them myself (I can not stand to eat mayonnaise which is often used in the variations my family and friends like best). But I do know the problem. Can you tell in what ratio you used the incrediens? Like "twice as much pasta as the veggies....." for me this would be enough to try it

When I cook from recipes, I'll often adjust and adapt, and I'm also glad to get inspiration even if it's not precisely measured out. Some things need specificity, like baked goods, but I think many of us are happy with the improvisational style of cooking. Share!

Goodness, I never know how much of anything I put into things. Go for it.

Re: Pasta Salad with Potential (vegan/vegetarian/omnivorous)

I rarely measure, but I have begun to train my eye as far as amount of different items I put in. So when I tell people how to make something, they are usually able to make it without any issues (assuming they can cook and they don't mind spicy food).

This is something that drives my husband crazy, he insists on measuring out everything (even pancake mix where you just add water). So when he sees me just dumping in this or a shaking a bit of that in, he has a mini freak out, but that's how I learned to cook so I doubt I will change anytime soon.

But I do love when I find other people that can cook like this. And I do appreciate the recipe a bit more because when it has been made enough times that it doesn't need to be measured it is probably pretty good.

Dump cooking is what I do best....you just dump it in until it looks right...works great for soups, pastas, the occasional Dessert. My sister freaks out about me doing this, the DH is ok with it as long as it turns out edible :)

I am definitely that kind of cook. Post your vague recipes to your heart's delight! Maybe we should start a section for vague recipes. ^_^

Well, I guess I'll post my current working recipes, of which I have three. I'll try to get that done and posted over in the cookbook section--probably all under one huge post, because I'm too lazy to want to do three posts for one basic subject.

Thanks, everyone, for the encouragement!
