Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from JustBento

Comments are now closed. Thank you for all of your terrific responses! The winner of the giveaway will be announced next week.

Dear JustBento readers, I need your help! I’m trying to put together a list of the most popular recipes here on JustBento. I can go by access count and all that, but I thought it would be more interesting if you told me what you like.

So, here’s the deal. Just leave a comment here stating the following:

  1. Your name (Your full name is not necessary, just a name or nickname so I can identify you)
  2. Your general geographic location in the world
  3. Up to 3 favorite recipes from the site, and why you like them. Please give me the full name or the link, since some recipes have very similar names.

And that is it! One commenter picked at random will receive a signed copy of The Just Bento Cookbook, plus an additional goodie to be disclosed later.

Just a few rules and all that:

  • Only one entry/comment per person please. If you leave more than one (unless it’s due to a glitch in the commenting system) I’ll have to disqualify you.
  • Perhaps it’s a bit too obvious but…only write in recipes that are actually on the site. I’ll allow JustHungry recipes too. But if you just list any old recipe, you’re probably confused…and will be ineligible for the drawing.
  • The prize can be shipped worldwide.
  • Deadline for entry: March 8, 2013 at 23:59:59 CET.

And that’s it! I’m looking forward to reading your comments!

For more bento recipes, ideas and tips, subscribe to Just Bento via your newsreader or by email (more about subscriptions).

Lani in CA, USA.

I like Miso Marinated Pork (butaniku no misozuke) because it's so simple and very delicious.

Also New potatoes with butter and soy sauce (Shinjaga shouyu bataa) because I use these ingredients all the time but never thought to try this combination, and it was really great.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Hi, I am Durga from India and have been using ideas from your blog for over a year. Though my daughter gets a traditional Indian lunch it is starting to look more an more like a bento every day! My two absolute favorites from here are Vegetarian Provençal cake and Carrot Rice two ways. The savory cake caught my attention since it can be made with ingredients I always have on hand, if I sub the kinako flour with chickpea flour. It is a great recipe for vegetarians since t ends itself to a lot of variations. The carrot rice is something I can fix in minutes in the morning, either way. I also add a pinch of Garam masala to give it a familiar flavor! Gets some carrots into the kid too!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

This is Matcha from Germany~

My three favorite recipes from your side are:

(1) Tuna soboro with ginger

Always loved the combination of those two flavors so I tried that recipe and loved it! Adding pineapple juice made me a little nervous but you were right, no pineapple flavor in the end.

(2) Homemade furikake no. 9: Green tea

When I first read that recipe I was literally head-over-heels for it, haha. So I bought everything the day after and oh my gosh it was sooo yum!!

(3) Yakibuta - Chinese style roast pork

I love, love, looove ramen and yakibuta makes for one of my favorite toppings.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Here are my favorite Just Bento recipes!

1. I really really love the "How to matke Shuumai/Shumai dumplings" recipe. When I go out to eat at Asian restaurants in the US, I always jump at the chance to eat shuumai dumplings as they are one of my favorite treats. I saw this recipe while I was browsing through the site and I immedietly went out to buy all of the ingredients. I couldnt have been happier with the results. I've already made this recipe multiple times over, I couldnt be happier with this dish!!

2. The "Pork (or beef) and mushroom roll ups" recipe is another excellent dish. It was super simple to make and it had a wonderful exterior crunch thanks to the panko break crumbs. When I add it to my bento box for lunch, I slice in half on the bias and it makes a wonderful contrast to my other bento box inclusions. It was super simple to make too!

3. Finally, my last favorite recipe is the "Bento sized mini cabbage rolls". Any type of meatball recipe is one of my first go to's for bentos. Their quick, convient, and they freeze really well! I like the addition of the cabbage roll to this recipe as it gives the meatball a different texture to the meatball itself. I make these by the dozen and freeze them in packages of four to six peices each so whenever I'm having a craving, I can quickly defrost a package!

This is my favorite bento site that I've found so far! It makes assembling bento boxes so much easier!!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Hello there! Emily from Minnesota, USA. Nothing too fancy but we love the basics here. Our favorite recipes are: kastudon/tonkatsu, gyoza and the basic soboro. My husband is typically a PB&J guy regarding his lunches but he loves when I prepare a bento for him. He loves soboro tucked into his onigiri and now considers katsudon one of his "comfort foods." What's even more fun is that my 15 month old daughter loves these foods. When we first made gyoza (boiled) she ate the filling of five gyoza! I love and appreciate you sharing your knowledge and your story. Keep up the good work, Maki!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Okay, my favorite recipes -- Pan Fried Lemon Chicken Nuggets, Sho-yu Tamago (Paleo friendly!) and the Orange Juice Carrots.

Thanks!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

My name is Emory and I live near Saratoga Springs, NY. My favorite recipe (and my boyfriend's too) has got to be the carrot kinpira (http://justbento.com/handbook/recipes-side-dishes-and-space-fillers/easy...). I love lots of other things too (like the cold soba noodles with dipping sauce, and the pan fried lemon chicken nuggets) but the kinpira is my all-time favorite, I don't even need the recipe anymore!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Hey there, mobychan from Baden-Würrtemberg, southern Germany, here^^
I really like your 1 Egg Tamagoyaki recipe
It's so easy and fast when I pack my Bento early in the morning^^

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Charlotte from Denmark

My all time favourite is kinpira: http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-side-dishes-and-space-fi... It's tasty and uses up thing that would have gone on the compost heap.

Second is tamagoyaki, I and all my children love it: http://www.justhungry.com/tamagoyaki

From Just Hungy it's okonomiyaki. so different, and realtively easy: http://justhungry.com/okonomiyaki-osaka-style

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Hi, thank you first of all for a wonderful website!

I really like your mini burger like the green pea burgers and the tuna tofu burgers. They're delicious and easy to make, I often make a big batch during the weekend and then eat a few at a time during the week. Saves me so much time while making my bento! I was also really impressed by the 1-egg tamagoyaki, I had no idea you could make them in little batches like that. And the pictures were very helpful to learn how to make it.

Oh and I'm writing from Sweden.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

I'm just going to try again! :) I'm Tamar, from the Netherlands.

1. Guy Does Bento no. 3: Mushroom rice and lemon chicken nugget bento
This one is so gorgeous! It combines some of my favorite ingredients: mushrooms with rice and lemon-flavored chicken, so tasty. And it looks colorful too!

2. Bento No. 71: Tiger Corn Muffin and Soup Bento
These are just too cute. Great for passing out on birthday parties or events and they taste great and are easy to make. I love them.

3. Bento filler: Spicy miso marinated green asparagus
This is the prefect combination of flavors: spicy and sweet. My mum has a sweet tooth which I inherited and my father has been adding chili peppers and garlic too every dish he serves, so I'm pretty much addicted to spicyness now! It's great to see these two things combined in a side dish :3

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

For a young woman living in Montana (the 4th largest state in the United States, while also being one of the lowest in population), it can be hard to try new and different recipes due to ingredient availability. Luckily, you’ve been so helpful in posting about online resources that I can make almost all of the recipes you list on this website and most on JustHungry!
Who doesn’t love the bright orange color that Orange Juice Carrots can add to a bento? -> http://justbento.com/handbook/recipes-sides-and-fillers/bento-filler-ora... I make mine a little less savory and a little more sweet, but that’s my preference. I need something sweet in my bento every day, and sometimes fruit gets a little monotonous.
And I often use sho-yo tamago as a protein staple at least twice a week. -> http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/sho-yu-tamago-soy-... Hard-boiled eggs are just absolutely made for bentos. I like hearing about lots of different egg-based recipes since it’s such a solid protein choice and often so easy to make.
The following link I’m about to post is for an entire category—the onigiri category! -> http://justbento.com/category/onigiri I know it’s not just one recipe; rather, it’s a compilation of different entries about onigiri. Making the perfect onigiri is an art and a science, and I think reading through at least a few articles in this category will more than adequately prepare you for that undertaking.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

My name is Tara, and I'm from the Midwest, USA! :) I absolutely love this site - I'm going shopping for the ingredients for Japanese Cooking 101 this weekend, and I can't tell you how excited I am! After a home stay in Japan, it took my stomach months to get used to American food again (and I'm kind of disappointed that it did...).

My favorite two recipes are the basic tamagoyaki (I always wondered how those were so cleverly made!) and carrot rice.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Hi,
I'm Nicole from Australia. I love a lot of the recipes on this site, and its hard to limit myself to just three, but the ones I make all the time are the char siu pork and the meat and tofu mixture for mini meatballs - I always try to keep a stash of these in the freezer. I also really loved the post on onigiri, it taught me how to make them and they are now a staple in my kids lunches.

I wanted to say chicken karaage, left overs are brilliant for lunch, but I don't think the recipe is on this site, it's on Just Hungry and I have it in the Just Bento Cookbook, but we just love it!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Hey Maki,

I fill my bentos almost exclusively with "bento fillers". After studying your bentos and those on 今日のお弁当 I have gained a great appreciation for simple, vegetable centered home-style bentos. Thanks so much!!!

Bento filler: Easy sugarfree carrot kinpira
Bento filler: Quick Pickle Cucumber (from JB cookbook)
Bento filler: Lazy Easy Tea Eggs

p.s. I really enjoy your use of light ;-D

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Silly me, My name is Nicole and I live in the American Midwest.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Lizzie, Canadian Rockies, BC, Canada

My favourite recipes from Just Bento and Just Hungry are the ketchup peppers, Tamagoyaki (particularly the 1-egg version, as I'm the only person in my house who eats eggs), and onigiri.

I cannot thank Maki enough for the wealth of information she has shared with us all.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

I'm from California, US!

My favorites are:
http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/1-egg-tamagoyaki-j... I really like this recipe because it's so convenient when I'm only making tamagoyaki for myself! I don't want to eat too many eggs by myself so this recipe is perfect!

I also liked http://justbento.com/handbook/guest-post-articles/fun-sweet-mochi-and-fr... because they looked so adorable and are a relatively healthy dessert. You can't go wrong there!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Hi! My name is Julia and although I am from Texas, I am active duty Navy and currently stationed in northern Japan. I get to do a nice mix of American and Japanese cooking, as I shop at the base commissary and the local grocery store. While I love several recipes from the site, my absolute favorite is the pan fried lemon chicken nuggets (http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/pan-fried-lemon-ch...)! I make them at least once a week because they are just so darn easy and delicious. =)

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Bu from good old Switzerland here!

"forgotten vegetable kinpira" is my absolute favourite! it really opened up my eyes on how much of the veggies we usually throw away, and also performs fabulously chopped up and mixed into inarizushi :)

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Melissa from New Brunswick (Canada) here! My favourite is the Pan-Fried Lemon Chicken Nuggets (http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/pan-fried-lemon-ch...). I always want to use these in a bento, but somehow, no matter how many I make, they're gone by morning.... This weekend I'll be trying onigiri for the first time, using your tips.

Those lemon chicken nuggets

Several people have mentioned the Lemon Chicken Nuggets...a reader once told me that she and her husband call them "Maki nuggets"...that made me laugh so much, that now that's what we call them in our house too. ^_^

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Elise, from New Zealand

My favourite recipes are:

1 egg tamagoyaki (http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/1-egg-tamagoyaki-j...) because it's so tasty but so simple.

All-season shredded vegetable pickle-salad, plus migrating birds! (http://www.justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/all-season-shredded-vegetable...) because it's so fresh tasting and healthy.

Onigiri (http://www.justhungry.com/2003/12/obento.html) because this is the recipe that got me making bentos in the first place!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

I love the kijiyaki:
http://justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/bite-size-chicken-teriyaki-for-be...

tamagoyaki:
http://justhungry.com/tamagoyaki

and (best) onigiri (ever):
http://justhungry.com/2007/01/onigiri_omusubi_revisited_an_e.html

I was SO pleased after finding this site that these clear instructions produced great results the first time I tried them. They tasted good AND looked like they were supposed to look, which was a far cry from previous attempts at recipes from other sources. Since then I have tried many recipes from both Just Bento and Just Hungry sites, and none of them have let me down yet! :) Thank you!!!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

*and I forgot to add that I am Melanie from Tigard, OR :)

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Justine from Massachusetts. My favorite recipes from Just Bento and Just Hungry are actually these three that I make all the time:
-Tamagoyaki: http://www.justhungry.com/tamagoyaki
I found your step by step instructions super helpful in mastering the technique behind tamagoyaki.
-Carrot & Sesame Furikake: http://justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/homemade-furikake-no-2-carrot-and...
I make this any time I have leftover carrots. It's super easy and yummy :)
-Chicken Kara-age: I have your recipe copied from the Just Bento cookbook, so this may be cheating but this is my all time favorite of yours.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Hello! Michele from Jackson, Ohio here!

So these are my top three recipes, also the top three most used :)

*Basic meat and tofu mixture for mini-burgers, meatballs and more

*Bento filler: Easy sugarfree carrot kinpira

*justhungry.com/tamagoyaki

All of your recipes that I've tried are delicious, but these are my favorite! Thank you Maki for this website and all the tasty recipes and advice!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

RonC from San Diego. My favorite recipes are currently Bento no. 76: Chicken and pepper rice cooker bento. It's easy to make fresh in the morning due to most of it cooking in the rice cooker, It's tasty with a good variety of flavors plus it makes a filling lunch even for someone who tends to eat too much food for lunch.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Julien here from Vietnam (the country that the shipping price is often doubled, so don't expect anything) ! I'm new to the bento scene, and your blog has been very helpful for a beginner like me. Here is my 3 top favorite recipe from your site so far:

- Carrot rice http://www.justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/carrot-rice-tw... which is my most favorite. I find it quite tasty and easy to make, and on top of that it actually make my boyfriend eat carrot, which was his least favorite food ingredient.
- Hearty meatball and vegetable soup http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/hearty-meatball-an... , since you might have already known, Vietnamese meal always have to have at least one soup item, and compare to the Vietnamese soup this one was quite strikingly similar to me. Thus I fell in love with this soup.
- Beef and beansprout burger http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/lower-calorie-lowe... because it surprised me of how I have never thought if the ideal of putting beansprout into meatball or burger patty ! It was quite tasty and healthy, which is my top aim in making bento.

That is about it ! I do hope to get your book soon, though amazon.com wasn't very lenient on me with the shipping price.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Thank you Maki for all of the delicious recipes!! I actually have your Just Bento cookbook already, but I still wanted to share my favorite JustBento.com recipes! I hope I'm being helpful and not just 邪魔!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the recipe for chicken and bell pepper in the rice cooker. (http://justbento.com/handbook/rice-cooker-bentos/bento-no-76-chicken-and...) It's easy and so delicious! I can't tell you how many times I've made it...it's definitely one of my go-to meals!

I've also made carrot kinpira (http://justbento.com/handbook/recipes-side-dishes-and-space-fillers/easy...) a million times! The wee it of spicy is so tasty.

Finally, I can't forget to mention the mini cabbage rolls! (http://justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/bento-sized-mini-cabbage-rolls) YUM. I'm always cooking for one, but my freezer is stuffed with all sorts of leftover goodies (I actualy can't fit anything else in there...which is a bit sad) and these warm up wonderfully!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

ninthpossibility, originally from Kansas, now in central France. My favorite recipes (so far! I've only just started!) are char siu bao (because that's one of my favorite things ever and it never occurred to me that I could make it at home); tamagoyaki (because it's my favorite kind of sushi and so much fun to make); and ham negimayaki (because cured pork and green onions are two of my favorite things).

Love the sites and the classes!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Name: Jennifer
Location: Tokyo, from Canada
Favourite/most used recipes:
1. Kinpira (from Just Bento cookbook) This is so yummy and keeps well. Usually I but the vacuum packed pre-cut gobo, and I have bought an actual gobo once just to try. Last year when I lived in Shanghai I made it with carrots.
2. Sushi rolls (cookbook) I don't make these often but when I do, I always use your recipe. I like the value put on proper rice preparation and the step by step instructions.
3. Niku jaga (from Just Hungry) I live with my Japanese boyfriend and we have very different ideas of what comfort food is, but this hits the right spot for both of us. It's a cheap, easy to make, easy to eat meal for both of us.

Thanks!!!!!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

This is Aliah, Malaysian living in North Wales.
My favourite recipe are:

*Tuna tofu miso mini burgers. I love the simplicity of making it.
*1 egg tamagoyaki. Again, the simplest recipe which I could whip up every time.
*Onigiri (omusubi) revisited: An easier way to make Japanese rice balls , step-by-step from JustHungry. This recipe is how I found your blog. I'm always a rice girl but have problem in terms of self-control. So, your neater way of portioning onigiri in a cup definitely changed my life!

Thanks again :)

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

My name is Kristin and I'm from Montana in the US.

I love the carrot kinpira recipe, it's one that I've used over and over and over again.
I also really like the instant pickles, so tasty!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

I'm Candace, from Colorado in the US. It's hard to pick out just three recipes, but I think my favorites would have to be the earl grey tea muffins, the soy sauce eggs, and the curried kidney beans and vegetables recipes! They are all so good, so easy, and made out of stuff I almost always have in my pantry (at most I have to buy buttermilk for the muffins).

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

This is Kaitlyn from North Texas!
I stumbled onto this website by accident last year and I am hooked! Two nights ago, I made my older sister (who is a total a total health nut) the 1-egg tamogoyaki (http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/1-egg-tamagoyaki-j...) and she loved it :) now she wants me to make it for breakfast almost everday. We also love the black bean burgers and can wait to make them!! Other than that, all the recipes on this site look amazing and I can't wait to make more of them now that I have some free time at college. Thank you so much!!!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

I'm Cait from central Texas and my favorite things are;
easy sugar free carrot kinpura,
bento-sized mini meatloaves
and char sui which I liked best. I used it in making buns which went over really well. I'd like to make it again but I can't do so right now.

and of coarse, the Tamagoyaki. SOOO GOOOD!!!! http://www.justhungry.com/tamagoyaki

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

I'm Cait from central Texas and my favorite things are;
easy sugar free carrot kinpura that I like with dinner as an interesting taste between bites of other things,
bento-sized mini meatloaves which were much better than the mush my mother used to make and quite tasty
and char sui which I liked best. I used it in making buns which went over really well. I'd like to make it again but I can't do so right now.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Mette (longtime reader, first poster) from Kuopio, Finland.

My absolute favourite recipe is the "Balsamic Sesame Chicken" http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/balsamic-sesame-ch...

The reason behind why it's my favourite recipe here (I also follow Just Hungry, having a general liking for washoku) is because it's the closest I've gotten to recreating a chicken dish I ate at an all-you-can-eat dumpling restaurant I visited while studying in Japan. The dumplings were delicious, but the restaurant's sesame chicken was the best chicken I'd ever had and totally eclipsed the dumplings. It was by searching for recipes that resembled that dish that I found Just Bento and was able to cook that wonderful chicken for myself.

Thank you for both of your blogs, they are a continued delight in my kitchen.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

I've always considered the following as the best recipes in JustBento:

- Easy sugarfree carrot kinpira
- The stewed dumplings from Two kinds of chicken tsukune: Stewed dumplings and panfried mini-burgers
- Kinpira rice burger

These are the recipes I have already learned by heart, and I would always consider them fondly as my comfort bento. I started learning how to make bentos with these recipes (the first two), while I became closer to my in-laws when I made them the rice burger.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

I'm Karla from New York.

I like the http://justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/bite-size-chicken-teriyaki-for-be...
because it is easy and tasty

I like the 1 egg tamagoyaki for the same reason

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Lee here from New York :) I haven't had a chance to try many of your recipes but I remember how excited and easy it was to make the 1-egg tamagoyaki. So yummy and filling. Your instructions on how to shape them right were just perfect because my 1-egg tamagoyaki looked just like the 'normal' tamagoyaki without having to use so many eggs.
