Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

jbcookbook-1-sm.jpg

Remember back in August, when we did a week of Back To School articles and giveaways? The last giveaway, which received the most entries/comments by far, was for my book. Unfortunately, despite repeated attempts to contact the winner, it’s gone unclaimed. The poor book feels very sad and unwanted, like Anne Shirley when she arrived at Green Gables the first time.

So…I’ve decided to have another drawing! What’s up for grabs, as before: a signed copy of The Just Bento Cookbook. To enter, leave a comment to this post. Email subscribers: you must click through to the site and leave a comment, not reply by email; I will discard all email replies!.

Be sure to put a valid email address where you can be reached in the appropriate text box (the one that says “E-mail”). In the subject of the comment, tell us where you’re from (town/state/country - nothing too specific!) To make it a bit more fun, answer this question too: If you were going to be executed the next day, what would your last meal be?

Your comment/entry must be in before 23:59:59 CET (just before midnight of Friday, October 15, 2010. That’s right, you have only 2 days to enter! In addition, you must claim your prize before Monday, October 17 if you want your signed copy ASAP, because I’m leaving home for a few weeks then. (If I don’t hear back from the winner before Monday, she or he will have to wait until December for me to send out the book.) I’ll announce the winner soon after midnight CET on Saturday, October 16 - which will be after 6pm Eastern time/3pm Pacific time on Friday. This one will go fast! Good luck!

(The winner has been announced! Thank you to everyone who participated - sorry if you didn’t win ^_^;)

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

Thank you for the fun question...morbid and delicious!
For my final meal, a Thanksgiving dinner. It reminds me of friends and family coming together and loving each other. Just the smell of Autumn spices, apples and cranberries makes me happy. Specifically: Turkey with herbs de provence, acorn squash stuffed with wild rice raisins and apricots, garlic mashed potatoes, corn bread stuffing with leeks, whole cranberry sauce, corn on the cob, parmigiana crusted broccoli, apple pie crumble and a pumpkin cheesecake tart. Seems like a lot, but it is my last meal.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

I would want a feast. Tuna Mayo, Steak, Fondue, and Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia would all be on the list. Oh and Sushi and a Caramel Macchiato from Starbucks. :D

San Francisco, California, USA

First let me say that I have yet to make a recipe off your site that did not taste absolutely delicious, so I'd love to give your poor orphaned book a home and to try all the recipes in it!
For my last meal ever, I would probably opt for an Arabic food feast, and would try to spread the meal over several hours so I could eat lots of different things without getting too full!

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

I would pig out on all the sushi I could eat

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

Fresh caught, traditionally fire-cooked sockeye salmon!
Mmmm it's been over a year since I had that.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

i would have fried chicken and a medium grilled kobe steak. and i'd probably have grilled asparagus and garlic mashed potatoes. with tiramisu for dessert. might as well go all out!

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

Knoxville, Tennessee would be the new home of the book, enjoyed by my wife and children after my last meal of a fried egg sandwich with hot sauce on an Everything bagel from a local bakery.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

If I could only have one more meal, ever - Sushi and udon - till I explode. Green tea, indian tea and thai tea. Gulab jamun and dolce de leche ice-cream for dessert.

Oh and to take it too literally, if it were really my last meal I'd want tortier and Vichyssoise for the invocations of home.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

Wow, so many choices. I think I'd pick the two food items from Japan I haven't had since I left: pizza with mochi and nori, with choco-pan for dessert, just like the lunch ladies at my school used to make. (So good! I've never found its equal.)

Writing in from Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, Canada. Once upon a time, I was an exchange student in Maebashi, Gunma-ken, Japan. ^^

If you were going to be executed the next day, what would your last meal be?
Chocolate cake with the chocolate melted in the middle... with strawberries and cream... mmmmh

Tampa, FL, USA

Pierogi. It's something I use to have a lot as a child and had at my wedding. Every year (if possible) my husband and I go back to the restaurant we had our wedding reception at and order some. Maybe not my favorite food, but it would feel appropriate and if nothing else I'd want something to remind me of my husband. :)

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

I am from San Jose, California, USA.
My last meal would be creamy polenta with mushroom. Yum, just had it yesterday and it's sooo good.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

hailing from baltimore, maryland! if I were to die tomorrow, I'd ask for a big helping of my mom's mashed potatoes... I know it's a simple food, but my mom makes it just right :)

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

My last meal ever? I'd probably want to repeat the meal we had at our wedding! Hoisin braised short ribs, grilled kula corn & fingerling potato salad, snap peas with ginger, lychee champagne cocktails and passionfruit mousse cake!

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

I would love this book and give it a good home. I would cherish it and treat it gently. I would dearly love to have it and I promise to take care of it.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

My last meal would be a combination of old favorites that don't match, but I don't care.

First, a Colombian dish that my mom used to make, that I don't know if it has a name, but it's my favorite comfort food: layered rice, ground beef, tomatoes, lettuce, avocados and topped with queso fresco served with arepas. I'd also have a side of mac&cheese, stadium nachos, a slice of cheese pizza, half a grilled cheese sandwich, a side of bacon and a 2L of Coke followed by 12dz fresh chocolate chip cookies, a Sprinkles cupcake, and fresh churned Icecream. Go big or go home. Might as well have everything I restrained myself from in one sitting.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

My last meal...

Potato croquettes (as in the Italian way), porterhouse steak, mozzarella ball salad, cucumber roll from my favorite sushi place, white russians until I pop and for dessert the best damn coconut custard pie of my LIFE.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

I am Julia, from Madison, WI. If I were to be executed, my last meal would be TONS and TONS of sushi! Every kind imaginable. Plus, a side of agedashi tofu. I would eat until it hurt. Then, when I was executed, I would explode all over the executors and they would have a huge mess of half-digested sushi and my guts to clean up. HA. Take THAT, executors! :P

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

Singapore,Singapore, Singapore!

Last meal would definitely be my nanny's chicken porridge! Complete with potato shreds, carrot cubes and bucket of love. =]

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

I am from Nebraska, USA! GO HUSKERS! and for my last meal it would have to be beef jerky from our local butcher, Dr. Pepper, my mom's peppersteak, rice and ice cream!! This is a great giveaway, Thanks!

Berkeley, CA, USA

Last meal: In-N-Out burger.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

Calgary, Canada :D

If you were going to be executed the next day, what would your last meal be?

That is an interesting question. I think in the end, I would probably want to have Chinese as my last meal.
- Xiao Long Bao (小籠包)
- Beef pancake roll
- A good bowl of noodles - dan dan mian (擔擔麵) or these vietnamese noodles (順化牛肉檬)

A close second is this chicken, avacado + lots of other things sandwich from Montreal Quebec. I still dream of that sandwich. ha ha..

And a good ol' can of coke to drink with it.

Dessert, on the other hand, would probably not be Chinese.
- Mexican flan
I wonder if my best friend's mother would make it for me if I was on death row. ;D She makes it so well.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

Oh dear...last meal. Chili and rice? My grandma's chicken enchiladas? Three of the "feeds four people" mile-high white chocolate coconut cream pies from the fancy restaurant in town? My dad's flank steak? Grilled salmon....sushi....I just don't know if I could decide! We're in the Pacific NW corner of the states, and the RAINS HAVE COME, and they won't leave until March!

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

Arcadia, CA

Mmm.... Filet mignon au poivre with cremini cream sauce. And a huge glass of icy cold milk!

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

For my last meal, I'd have lobster and lots of dessert!!!

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

near Seattle, Washington State, USA!!!
Currently adopting orphans of any kind, especially books that get rave reviews. And I'm a good mom, too!

I'd have to say my last meal would include hamburger gravy (just like mom used to make) over mashed potatoes, some sort of rich and cheesy pasta dish like baked macaroni, and homemade sourdough bread. Carb overload to be sure! Maybe I'd be in some sort of diabetic coma at the time of execution and I could just sleep through it. ;0) Cheers, Maki!

campinas/sp/Brazil

As an old fashioned brazilian girl I have to say to feijoada.Nothing tastes more like Brazil and Rio de Janeiro than this dish.Wich is actually black beans cooked with pork and it is absolutelly delicious.Yay good luck for me.
Love your blog!

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

Anything my mom makes! It reminds me of spending time with my family =)
Plus super chocolate-y cake with fudge sauce for dessert!

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

If you were going to be executed the next day, what would your last meal be?

I'm a simple man...
I'd have to say anything prepared by me and shared with friends and family.
A great soup and sandwich shared with my love.
A pasty to bring me back to college days.
Happy Hour Nami Sushi.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

Portland Oregon, USA

For my last meal: Indian Buffet until I actually died of overeating rather than the firing squad!

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

For my last meal, I'd want a meal cooked by my Filipino grandma, like pancit, chicken and pork adobo, rice and cascaron for dessert (cascaron consists of coconut and rice flour fritters coated in candied brown sugar syrup). Yum!

Love manga? Then check out my manga review blog, i ♥ manga!

Last Meal!

I'd love to say some sort of wonderful gourmet experience, but honestly, I'd go for my grandma's pound cake and my mom's smoked chicken and the sides from a typical Thanksgiving at home. Execution calls for comfort food :)

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

If you were going to be executed the next day, what would your last meal be?

Veal porterhouse steak - yes, yes, I know, not even vaguely healthy, but I'm being executed, right? Steamed potstickers to start, because I love them, salad with lots of blue cheese, creamed spinach, lots of red wine, more red wine for dessert....

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

From Gardena, CA Hmmm, for an appetizer crispy tempanyaki shrimp with the legs, roasted artichoke with olive oil mayo, and Veggie Grills Downtown Nachos, usui agi fugu soup. Vietnamese lobster with special noodles, Grilled Kobe fillet medium well with sauteed green bean and toasted almonds. Cafe Diablo from Arches and Bananas Foster with Vanilla bean ice cream. I think that should do it.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

Philadelphia, PA (Originally from Singapore)

My last meal would be steamed crabs and white rice. Yum!

Minnesota, USA

My last meal would definitely be wild rice soup with fresh homemade bread, no question.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

My last meal would certainly be Beef Wellington. My mouth waters every time I see a picture of it, but I never got to try one.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

Poor book! Though good for the rest of us who didn't win the first time :)
Upstate South Carolina here.

As for a last meal, I'd go with:
-avocado-feta salsa with chips
-glazed salmon
-baked asparagus
-roasted squash, parsnips, carrots, celery root, etc.
-my from-scratch mac and cheese
-homemade bread
-cheesecake, either green tea or peanut butter and chocolate
-brie/camembert
-fruit (probably kiwi and raspberries)

With a couple glasses of wine (probably a pinot gris and a vouvray), and some oolong tea.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

I would give this book a loving home. Since I did not respond originally, my answer to your question about last meals would be my mother's chile relleno. I request it at every birthday and have yet to taste the same dish made by any other person that is as good as mom's.

From Atlanta, Ga.

Pretty sure facing death I would want comfort food. Being from the south that would hav e to involve gravy and something fried!

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

I am from Kansas City, Missouri, USA.

My last meal would have to be steak au poivre with roasted garlic mashed potatoes. My husband, bless him, makes this delicious meal for me every year for my birthday. Which is coming up again very soon! :)

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

From Ontario, CA (USA, not Canada!)

My last meal would consist of my favorite deep fried foods: Katsudon, sweet and sour pork, funnel cake, onion rings, fried chicken, fried mozzarella sticks, krispy kreme donuts, and seasoned curly fries!!

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

being severely lactose intolerant..... I would have gallons of the best full fat cream iceceam on this planet.... in every flavor!

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

I live in Northfield, MN. My last meal? Pizza. And some sickenly sweet dessert, heavy on the chocolate and caramel and whipped cream.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

Michigan, USA

I would have pierogi.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

LOL, I want to adopt her :)

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

My last dinner would have to a simple Porter House steak dinner with some mash potatoes or garlic fries. Yum.

teeny, tiny Arcadia, Florida :)

My last meal...hmmm...would have to be;
a tuna roll from my favorite Japanese restaruant in Port Charlotte - Ichiban, a dozen boiled blue crabs for ME to pick for about 3 hours, with melted butter (just a drizzle) on the meat to finish it off , my mom's mashed potatoes made into a volcano as to hold her pork roast gravy, some Chester Cheetah's Hot Fries (oh, who am I kidding? Make it a BAG of them!), a petite filet mignon - very rare, some cut-up tomatos with a little salt, spinach with butter and sour cream, some cherries from my old tree in Cleveland, a couple tootsie rolls and a 12 pack of Heineken. May as well throw in a cigarette...what the hell? At least I'm being honest :)
