Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

jbcookbook-1-sm.jpg

Remember back in August, when we did a week of Back To School articles and giveaways? The last giveaway, which received the most entries/comments by far, was for my book. Unfortunately, despite repeated attempts to contact the winner, it’s gone unclaimed. The poor book feels very sad and unwanted, like Anne Shirley when she arrived at Green Gables the first time.

So…I’ve decided to have another drawing! What’s up for grabs, as before: a signed copy of The Just Bento Cookbook. To enter, leave a comment to this post. Email subscribers: you must click through to the site and leave a comment, not reply by email; I will discard all email replies!.

Be sure to put a valid email address where you can be reached in the appropriate text box (the one that says “E-mail”). In the subject of the comment, tell us where you’re from (town/state/country - nothing too specific!) To make it a bit more fun, answer this question too: If you were going to be executed the next day, what would your last meal be?

Your comment/entry must be in before 23:59:59 CET (just before midnight of Friday, October 15, 2010. That’s right, you have only 2 days to enter! In addition, you must claim your prize before Monday, October 17 if you want your signed copy ASAP, because I’m leaving home for a few weeks then. (If I don’t hear back from the winner before Monday, she or he will have to wait until December for me to send out the book.) I’ll announce the winner soon after midnight CET on Saturday, October 16 - which will be after 6pm Eastern time/3pm Pacific time on Friday. This one will go fast! Good luck!

(The winner has been announced! Thank you to everyone who participated - sorry if you didn’t win ^_^;)

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

Hi! I'm from Nantes, France!

If you were going to be executed the next day, what would your last meal be?
That's a difficult question... but I think it would go like this:
First, as an entrée, a tartine of grilled rye bread flavoured with garlic and olive oil, with slices of tomatoes (especially cherry tomatoes), yellow sweet pepper, leaves of fresh basil and a little Parmesan cheese.
Then, a shrimp and other seafood risotto, with many colorful vegetables.
Then cheese: goat cheese... and also ewe cheese, served with a green salad.
And for dessert: mirabelle tarte (small yellow plum).
miammmmmmm :-)!

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

I suppose on the eve of execution I might not be up to eating, but I'm of Polish/Russian descent, and the most likely comfort foods to tempt me would be full of dairy, starch, fat, and all those deadly delights. Anything milky, sour-cream-y, noodle-y, cheesy, etc. would be the ticket. Say, chicken paprikash with egg noodles, or thick ham and scalloped potatoes. I'm in such awe of all the commenters here who would be feeding healthy choices to their doomed bodies!

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

Hm...well, I'd eat until I was too stuffed to move.

A burger.
Takoyaki.
Jarritos Pinapple soda.
Fruit salad.
Chicken Alfredo.
And Tiramisu.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

San Antonio, TX

My last meal would be a few of my favorite foods: unagi sushi, tacos, pho, and a fruit tart.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

My last meal would be....an appetizer of havarti w/shiitake mushrooms, unagi and some type of duck (maybe peppercorn form France because its all good and melty in your mouth), and tiramasu for desert with perrier jouet.

Oh, and I love Just Bento btw... I'm totally obsessed with my lunches being cute works of art so this is my favorite site to aid me with that.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^ -- from Arkansas

Well, if it's going to be my last meal, I would want a vegetarian buffet with lumpia, gyoza, steamed buns, various types of sushi, samosas, atsuage tofu, miso soup, ma po tofu, pancit, curry rice, yaki soba, pho, Filipino style barbecued seitan, tofu caldareta, pad thai, pad see ew, panang curry, Sichuan style eggplant, dry fried long beans, ramen, palak paneer, chana dal, aloo gobi, french fries, leche flan, bibingka, biko, cassava cake, and tres leches cake.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

oh i would love a copy!!

From Indonesia

Hmmm...it's difficult...but I think I'll eat :
1. Chuka Idako
2. Dragon roll
3. Takoyaki
4. Sweet-Sour fried fish
5. Fried Daikon Radish Cake
6. etc.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

Hi!! I'm from the USA :)

Wow! What a topic...guess I would have a slice of pizza from my FAVE hometown pizza shop Coccia House, sausage & roasted red peppers, Red Lobster coconut shrimp w/ pina colada dip sauce, Olive Garden pasta alfredo, and desert would be some toffee, a couple iced Christmas cookies (like my mom makes) and a really good brownie that is so rich it does not need frosting :) Oh and some really good coffee after the meal - probably slip some XANAX in it so I'm not freaking about being executed !! (i work in a pharmacy so sorry had to throw in some RX humor)

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

From Indonesia
I'll eat various kinds of fruit that I've never ate...^.^
I wish I won't be executed the next day...

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

My Last meal... mmmm well despite the fact I'd probably have zero appetite, what with the whole going to die thing... probably several litres of fresh Ginger & Orange Juice <3 mmmmmmm

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

My last meal would probably start with caprese salad made with fresh garden tomatoes and reasonably aged balsamic vinagar, medium-rare steak with barbecued vegetable skewers and a baked mashed potato thing with cheese and sour cream my aunt makes, along with freshly baked french bread for the main and end with baked cheese cake covered in caramel sauce and whipped cream ... and maybe some of my favourite chocolates by Bernard Callebaut (the Bernard -- egg cream sandwiched between two dark discs of perfect chocolate). I would probably drink some nice Chilean red wine with this, and some Dieu Du Ciel Aphrodisiaque beer (cocoa and vanilla stout), followed at the end by a lovely, hot cup of tea. Mmm.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

I live in Indonesia, and I would like to eat fried crispy eggplant with chili sauce and rice for my last meal.. T.T

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

I would love a medium rare filet mignon, raw fried potatoes, salad with balsamic vinaigrette, and my mom's red velvet cake for dessert. I'm can taste it all now! That also happens to be one of my favorite birthday meals.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

Baltimore MD

In trying to eat as many good things that I would have to give up before changing my diet drastically, I came to realize that final meals aren't always as good as you expect them to be. However, I know that my mom's pie (any kind, probably peach, apple, milk, and shoofly) would be a major part of it. I think that the other thing I'd love to eat would be eggs and rice & cassava cake. true comfort food for me.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

I'm from Ariziona, USA

My last meal would have to be potstickers with a side of veggies.
For dessert, it would be ice cream with chocolate sauce!

British Columbia, Canada ! (:

Q: If you were going to be executed the next day, what would your last meal be?
A: ohh that's a hard choice ! i guess i would have a bit of my favourites. First, start off with a spinach salad with my favourite dressing (vinaigrette). Then have some vietnamese spring rolls, chinese beef curry, and siu mai. For desert I'd have leche flan, puto, or fruit tarte- extra kiwi ! yum yum ! :D

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

My last meal before I die? Easy - Crunchy greasy beef tacos, white rice with a sprinkle of sugar, creamed spinach, and chocolate/peanut butter ice cream for dessert.

Thanks for the contest!

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

I am from the US.
And I would dearly love this orphaned book to be my wonderful chosen book that I will care for as my child!
Lol :P

Sounds corny... Anyway, if I were to be executed, I would probably fly to the best Japanese restaurant in the world, order what interests me -which I have never had before- and also food the chef recommends.
I want to spoil myself on my last day with the food I only enjoy to the most that I can!

Thank you for this wonderful opportunity,

Another bento lover, Asian admirer, etcetera etcetera.

Tasmania, Australia

Hooray, another chance!

(Actually I think I may have missed it, but just in case...)

The realist in me says I should pick something extremely rare that you'd have to wait a long time to get, but the silly person in me says pumpkin pie and Concord grape juice. Or anything from Heston's Feasts or Iron Chef. :)

Thanks again.

In our home this orphaned book will be cherished and used!

My last meal, easy as!
Fried rice with two (nay, three, it's a special occasion after all) fried eggs on top, but so that the egg white is just set and not crispy and the yolks still runny! It'd be best if the fried rice had shrimps, chicken AND leftover BBQ pork in it, but even a simple Nasi Goreng or Kimchi fried rice, or simple leftovers fried rice with ginger and garlic and plenty of scallions would do fine.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

My last meal would probably be this amazing gorgonzola and melon risotto I had on my honeymoon in Seattle. It was the most fresh, wonderful, flavorful meal I've ever had. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

If you were going to be executed the next day, what would your last meal be?
I would get the chef special from Sushi of Gari in NYC. I would want to eat there because delivery won't be good. We go to Sushi of Gari once a year, and it still the best sushi place we know. Thank you much for you web site, I learned so much from you! I have been making bentos for my daughter for a few months now, and i check your website daily. Just wanted to use this opportunity to thank you :)

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

My last meal would have to be breakfast foods, if nerves would let me eat anything at all. Without that taken into account... Barbecue ribs with french fries and fried zucchini. May as well right?

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

My dad's enchiladas, my mom's meatloaf with mushroom sauce, and my grandma's raspberry bars.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

Ha, whoops. Forgot location. >.<;; I'm near San Francisco, California, where we have summer all the way to October. XD

For my last meal:
My dad's enchiladas, my mom's meatloaf with mushroom sauce, and my grandma's raspberry bars. <3

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

I think I could face my execution, if I could just have another bowl of soba that I would have every time I would visit my obachan, I 'm 52 now and I still remember her giving me a quarter to go to the local soba house, every time I would visit her, it is a memory I'll alway's cherish.

houston

hmmmmm last meal??? i would say a HUUUUGE platter of otoro sushi =D coupled with handmade kamo-soba. and a cup of green tea. Oh and tofu from kyoto.... =D

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

My last meal would be simple, spinach ravioli with all the fixings!

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

From Longmont, CO, USA.
Hm....last meal, huh? Don't really care as long as it is at a big table with all my family and friends, and unlimited bottles of good wine. Oh, and various delectible cheeses. Gotta have cheese. Okay, maybe I do care.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

I would want my last meal to be lots and lots of sleeping pills... that way I could do myself in!

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

I'm from Halifax Nova Scotia Canada birthplace of Anne Shirley ;)
If you were going to be executed the next day, what would your last meal be?
If it were to be tomorrow I would want my mother's homemade beef stew because its so warming and filling. When ever my mother made stew she also made fresh tea biscuits for us and mine would have a smiley face.

Calgary, Alberta Canada --Hello!

I think my last meal might have to be a little bit of everything from my childhood: mom's steamed chicken, dad's mulligatawny soup and gramma's steamed rice noodle rolls.

Yup.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

Being somewhat of an anime fan, I'd definitely go with the favorite food of my favorite character, Tsukimiya Ayu, which is taiyaki. Yeah, it might not be anything fancy but for me it's like it came straight from the heavens - love azuki and the whole japanese vibe this tasty snack gives out, so many memories (of Kanon, sadly I haven't been to Japan yet).

Other than that, I would probably opt for a true japanese obento; though I'm making them on a daily basis I still lack a heck of a lot of ingredients to make an authentic one. It might sound strange that I am not asking for some cake or mac & cheese but I'm a bit of an otaku nutjob.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

California, USA

That's kind of a depressing thought... but I'd like:
A very good tasting salad...
Potatoes cooked in every style possible
Shrimp
Lobster
Fresh Picked and Steamed Corn on the Cob (by itself; no butter)
New England Clam Chowder that is not overly salty
Prime Rib with all the tendons
Ceviche
Anticuchos
Salmon Sashimi
a souffle (This may change based on whether I like it after I eventually try it)
Red Velvet Cake
Red Currant Mousse Cake
An Ice Cream that I haven't the faintest idea what flavor it is, but that I had in Lima (the shop was down the block from a music store). It had three pretty colors and was one of the best ice creams I ever had. One of the colors tasted like a graham cracker shell of a pie.

and now I'm hungry... I'm fairly sure that there would be more added to this meal if only I could remember some other foods that I like and wish to eat.
Anyhow, Thank you for holding another giveaway =)

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

For sure a big dish of Pizzoccheri , a great northern Italy meal!

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

Hmm... if I had to be executed, I would definitely have to eat a traditional Chinese 10-course banquet meal. I especially love it when it's at weddings and there's abalone on the menu!

I would love to give the book a good home. It will be well taken care of. ;)

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

My last meal would be my mother's miso soup with eggplant, kama meshi (any kind) and ichigo-milk shave ice for dessert.

Maryland, USA

Too many good choices, but in the end it would have to be jajangmyun and tangsuyuk- one of my favorite Korean/Chinese combos :9

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

Hmm...if i were to be executed what would I want...Its hard to say. I think ideally I'd like to have a large course meal with different dishes from a variety of cuisines. Like a dish from Chinese cuisine, American cuisine, Tex-Mex, Louisianian (because I'm from Lafayette, Louisiana and yes, thats right, it is its own cuisine in my mind), Japanese, and one that I have never tried before.

Either that or the biggest, unhealthiest, greasiest meal that I could think of. lol

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

If you were going to be executed the next day, what would your last meal be?

My last meal would be Buckwheat Gallettes with Camembert, Potatoes, Egg and Ham filling. And Crème Brulée!

I live in Vienna, Austria, and Bentos are my way of doing portion size control when I don't get to cook.

=)

11 Courses in Kyoto

It would have to be revisiting my Japanese business partners favorite restaurant in Kyoto. He used to go there as a student and we made a special trip from Tokyo to go there. I cannot name specific items but it was 11 courses - each simple with distinct flavors of the ingredients shinning through. Unforgettable!

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

Hello, I'm from Sydney, Australia!

The first thing that popped to mind is SASHIMI!

salmon belly | kingfish | tuna | scallops| ebi | squid
accompanied with some gari, a bowl of crab miso soup, and hot bowl of rice

Nice and simple.

Cheers!

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

Im Such a goose I forgot to put where I am from

Becki
Sydney Australia

My last meal would be a mixed bag including my mums beef Stroganoff, plus Gyoza and takoyaki for an entree and deep friend ice cream with caramel sauce for dessert.

Becki >_<

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

If I were to have the opportunity to choose a last meal, I would like to have my mum's cooking.

It doesn't need to be fancy or expensive, because nothing can be as heartwarming and dear as your own mother's cooking.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

My last meal would be ham, chees, chicory-rolls with mashed potatoes in the oven, or as we call it: 'witloof met hesp en kaas'. The best meal in the world.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

Keep it simple - dying on a full stomach sounds terribly uncomfortable.

Natto-okra on rice with some well made tsukemono to ease you through to the end.

Re: Claim this poor orphaned book ^_^

My last meal would have to be our traditional Christmas meal - my way. It's pork belly, bone in with crackling, boiled potatoes, sauerkraut, and steamed broccoli (my mum prefers brussel sprouts) with a choice of either pepper or bearnaise sauce, and then chocolate pudding with whipped cream for dessert. Yum! So good, and so many good memories attached, as it's a meal we pretty much eat once a year, together with the whole family.

Czech Republic

My last meal would definitely be chocolate... Because it helps me fight stress and I suppose I would be pretty stressed out the night before my execution :-X

Lyon - France

For my last meal... I would eat untill my belly exploses!
a big ramen to begin with!
then some bagels with ham, cheese, ketchup, salad... (please a real one not from the supermarket!)
And to finish blueberry muffins and coockies with white chocolat from st*r b*...
Rhaaa so hungry!!!
