Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Bento fans all over the world know about Bento&co. Based in Kyoto, Japan, Bento&co sells only bento boxes and related products, and their ever-evolving catalog features items reflecting the best of Japanese bento box design, from cute to modern-minimalist to traditional. It’s also one of the few online stores catering to the international market that carries real Japanese wood and stainless steel bento boxes. All the products they carry are made in Japan, with the exception of some bento accessories that are designed in Japan and manufactured in China.

And, this is the item they’re giving away. It’s the impossibly cute Kokeshi Bento box! I understand that these have been flying off their shelves, so I’m really glad that we can give away one right here on JustBento. One lucky winner will win their choice of one of the Kokeshi Bento boxes pictured below.

bentoco-kokeshibento-all.jpg

A kokeshi is a traditional Japanese doll made of turned wood. They originated in the northern parts of Honshuu, the main island in Japan, but nowadays you see them sold everywhere in Japan. Japanese people love kokeshi; they’re so iconic that Nintendo took their inspiration for the Mii avatars used in Wii games from the kokeshi form.

The Kokeshi Bento box is made to look like a kokeshi doll, but is made of practical, microwave-safe plastic (remove the inner lids before microwaving). The box has three main parts: two stacking round layers for your regular bento food with leakproof lids, plus a small bowl that can be used for soup, fruit, cereal, and so on. (Note that the bowl is not water-tight; the idea is to bring along a packet of instant soup or your own vegetable soup concentrate, and to add hot water in the bowl with the soup mix when you’re ready to eat.) The bowl inverts on top of the stack to form the head of each kokeshi character, and a bento band is included to hold things together.

The total capacity of the box is 640ml - 200ml for each stacking tier, and 240ml for the bowl. It’s suitable for adults with small appetites.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love the bento&co people. I recently bought my first set of real bento 'gear' from them.

So this is not my favourite recipe, but my 2 year old son's.

Its a simple rice dish that i came up with. I guess you could call it Tuna-Pesto rice. The recipe is not that formal, i just made it up one evening.

- put two ~150g tins of tuna (in salt or oil) into a bowl
- mix in 4 teaspoons of green pesto. red can be used, but it does not compliment the tuna in my opinion.
- mix in 1 cup of green peas (i just defrost a cup full from the freezer)
- cook 4 cups of rice (this is dry rice put into my rice cooker)
- mix the rice into the tuna while it is still warm.

You should now have a big bowl of tuna-pesto rice, it can be served as is, which is the way my son likes.

Myself and the wife like to roll the tuna-pesto rice up in seaweed, then cut it up like a California roll. The are then served with some strong soy and/or wusabi for dipping. My wife likes strong flavours, and sometimes its a Worcestershire sauce/strong soy dipping sauce.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite thing to pack in my bento is rice because you can leave it plain or dress it up, plus it tastes good with everything. I also LOVE adding some marinaded tofu to my bento because it's so easy to prepare, just drain it the night before and but it in a quick marinade then throw it in the oven for twenty minutes while you're preparing the rest of your bento.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My fav are rice and rolled egg. Hmmm...

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I'm still quite a beginner, but my favorite has got to be hummus and pita. Not terribly traditional, but so tasty!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I usally use leftovers from dinner, though i love to make rice balls wrapped in nori with salmon and mayo inside.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I like taking re-invented leftovers.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

This is such a cute bento! My favorite would definitely have to be tamagoyaki, and green beans sauteed w/ lots of garlic, both tasty either hot or cold!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Favorite bento food: onigiri, without a doubt. So many fillings, so little time. I like experimenting, too. I'm Thai, and part of my family is also Indian, so I love stuffing random things like curried shrimp and such (and not Japanese curry, usually, though that's good too) inside them. Num. I want to go make some right now, actually. I've also got a bunch of umeboshi in the fridge that I've been meaning to stuff into onigiri. I should really go do that. :9

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

For me, it would have to be pan fried tofu and tamagoyaki.
Also, you can never go wrong with some yummy meatballs
or a tuna onigiri! :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Salmon, green onion, and swiss chees mini quiche, carrot sticks, wheat crackers, kalamata olives, and green grapes. Yum!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite is undoubtly onigiri! These kokeshi bento boxes are too cute!!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Traditional Japanese food! Rice, pickled vegetables, seaweed, some fish...

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Seaweed Salad! Refreshing, satisfying, and may I add...delicious!
Try this recipe for a summer twist: http://www.ecokaren.com/2010/07/seaweed-wakame-salad-recipe/

Yummmmmm

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I haven't really done bentos much, I am working on getting into the habit, but my favorite food for packing lunches is pasta salad. I mix curly pasta, broccoli, cubed ham, cubed cheddar, and sliced black olives, add Italian dressing. While it is carb heavy by itself, it mixes some protein, dairy and veggies in. For simplicity, I can buy everything precut (more expensive, but worth it in time), and I can either make it as a dinner side dish or, more often, cook extra pasta when I make spaghetti (I realize the noodle isn't technically spaghetti, but in my family, any pasta with tomato sauce and ground meat is spaghetti), and mix everything up for the salad after serving out dinner.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Miso soup!

There's nothing better, and it's so easy to prepare. Just need a container like one of these that doesn't spill to tote it around with you.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love to pack leftovers (especially anything braised or stewed) with rice, fruits and vegetables.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

So far my favourite bento foods are tamagoyaki, onigiri and the red lentil snacks.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento item has to be EGGS! I rarely eat them for breakfast, and I'm a recovering Veg, so I don't eat much meat. They're so versatile, travel well and go with everything. From homemade fried rice, to boiled, to fried with green beans and sliced up, I love EGGS!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I am only a beginner so haven't tried alot of bentos...I love kawaii food, so anything kawaii and sweet are my favourites. I think I like tamagoyaki the best!!!!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I like riceroll and cute fruits. tamagoyaki.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love salmon

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I like boiled eggs

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Most of the time my bentos contain fresh vegetables like cucumber or bell pepper. I also like to have Tamagoyaki :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I've recently become addicted to a recipe for vegetable torta which I got from the NY times - it fits neatly, tastes great, and best of all is adaptable to all the wonderful vegetables available this time of year.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento food is onigiri with umeboshi inside. Yum!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I looooooove putting fresh fruit in my bentos~
Especially strawberries~<3

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento food is spicy tuna onigiri.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I've been making bento for about 3 weeks now, and I love onigiri. Just bought my first bento box and rice molds. It's fun, healthful and flavorful. Thanks!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love noodles. Any kind.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favourite is miso chicken,1/2 tamagoyaki, rice, spinach gomae, and a little fresh mango for dessert. Then I eat the other half of the tamagoyaki for breakfast with rice and gomashio. Mmmm.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Hmm, depends on the wether.

You can't beat hot soup on a cold day. I tend to bring it into uni in a flask, and acompany it with rice cakes (I don't tend to buy bread because it goes stale) and fruit. Sometimes if I'm running late I'll buy it at the SU. My favourite is what I tend to call "on the turn soup" because it's literally everything that's on the turn in the vegetable half of the cupboard thrown into a slow cooker with a random amount of stock and some oats, split peas, and/or lentils. Oh how I love my slow cooker.

On a hot day, I'd go for a cheese salad wrap (I know that's technicaly bread, but it freezes better), and some iced tea or iced coffee to go with it.

Sometimes I would prefer something like salmon onigiri, or a cute bento that's filled with lots of colourful vegetables

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love sausage octopus! they are so cute and yummy :D

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I have a friend that I rarely get to see, but whenever we get together, he'd come over to my house and we'd make egg rolls. Sometimes they taste god awful, but none of them ever go to waste. We always have fun eating them. They're my all time favorite food!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Leftovers, and I usually just take one big serving of one item, which is easy but ends up not being too appetizing. This site has inspired me to think more about visuals as well as taste and try to take a few different things for one meal.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

For sure my favourite is : veggie "meatball" ,vegetarian balls ( how could i say it in english?'cause i'm speaking about patties make only with vegetables ).. make in many different ways : with tomato sauce, fried, baked, boiled.. hot or cold!

:)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite tasty non-Japanese bento-ready food is baked falafel. It's great bento stash: freezes really well. I haven't quite settled on my favorite recipe yet because I've been trying a different one every time. And my favorite Japanese bento food is onigiri: I like to fill it with spicy sausage or tiny shrimp. Tamagoyaki is a close second favorite. Both of these I learned to make from your site!!! Thanks!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Brown rice with miso soup and chicken!!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I'm pretty new at making/eating bentos also, but so far my favorite food would be kinpira, and all sorts of creative onigiri recepies :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

inarizushi!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love fresh and organic veggies from the farmers market. I sometimes eat baked chicken rolled around in various spices. very yummy!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My daughter loves cold noodles with soy and the chicken nuggets (variation from your recipe).
I like a side of sauted brussel spouts, almonds, garlic and parm with my chicken. She also likes fun hotdog shapes, and I like the potato patty things with the soboro (sp?) inside :) I like my plain leftovers in bento, too :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

These may be the cutest containers I have ever seen. I love all of them! My favorite bento food is lots of California rolls. For my children, I pack lots of sandwiches, grapes, strawberries, crackers, hard cooked eggs and of course, cookies.
Carol

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love onigiri, especially with sesame seeds and salmon.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I know it's basic, but my fave bento ingredient is tamagoyaki. I love the color it brings, it shapes easily, and it's a tasty and cheap source of protein.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

That's an easy one - Rice, with chicken and a steamed veggie. Easy, and yummy. And may I say that I've been drooling over those bentobox Kokeshis for a while now? so cute!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Kawaii!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

One of my greatest comfort foods is salmon onigiri and when I have time, I try to make a large quantity of it for the week for lunch. The recipe I use is my own, sauteed fresh salmon with sea salt and a touch of soysauce and then mixed with seto-fumi. That goes inside the rice and outside the onigiri, I usually add a little bit of bonito furikake to add even more flavour to the onigiri. On other days when I like it more plain, I leave out the furikake and only have the seasoning in the inside with the salmon.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Q. what is your favorite bento/lunch food?
A. Grandma recipes so no link:
spinach/tofu/sesame seed salad
'fried' chicken (homemade teriyaki, lightly floured, browned, baked chicken thighs)
umeboshi
brown rice with wheatberries and lentils

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento recipe are spicy beef broccoli with sesame seeds scattered on top, fish fillet in sweet and sour sauce and very spicy shrimp. I prefer my rice with bagoong (a local delicacy here in the Philppines) that makes the rice pink and yummy!!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

any dim sum item or noodles or shrimp fried rice...i have more than one favorite. sorry...haha
