Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Bento fans all over the world know about Bento&co. Based in Kyoto, Japan, Bento&co sells only bento boxes and related products, and their ever-evolving catalog features items reflecting the best of Japanese bento box design, from cute to modern-minimalist to traditional. It’s also one of the few online stores catering to the international market that carries real Japanese wood and stainless steel bento boxes. All the products they carry are made in Japan, with the exception of some bento accessories that are designed in Japan and manufactured in China.

And, this is the item they’re giving away. It’s the impossibly cute Kokeshi Bento box! I understand that these have been flying off their shelves, so I’m really glad that we can give away one right here on JustBento. One lucky winner will win their choice of one of the Kokeshi Bento boxes pictured below.

bentoco-kokeshibento-all.jpg

A kokeshi is a traditional Japanese doll made of turned wood. They originated in the northern parts of Honshuu, the main island in Japan, but nowadays you see them sold everywhere in Japan. Japanese people love kokeshi; they’re so iconic that Nintendo took their inspiration for the Mii avatars used in Wii games from the kokeshi form.

The Kokeshi Bento box is made to look like a kokeshi doll, but is made of practical, microwave-safe plastic (remove the inner lids before microwaving). The box has three main parts: two stacking round layers for your regular bento food with leakproof lids, plus a small bowl that can be used for soup, fruit, cereal, and so on. (Note that the bowl is not water-tight; the idea is to bring along a packet of instant soup or your own vegetable soup concentrate, and to add hot water in the bowl with the soup mix when you’re ready to eat.) The bowl inverts on top of the stack to form the head of each kokeshi character, and a bento band is included to hold things together.

The total capacity of the box is 640ml - 200ml for each stacking tier, and 240ml for the bowl. It’s suitable for adults with small appetites.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento is chicken curry with rice, yummy!

The Kokeshi Bento box is kawaii!!!!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Those are just too cute!

My answer to the question, is no doubt... tamagoyaki! When I started getting into bento, I loved spending hours looking at cute and yummy bento pictures. There was always this thing I saw (tamagoyaki) that made my mouth water just by looking at it. I didn't even know it was an egg! I just thought it looked delicious. When I finally found out what that was, I came across the 1 egg tamagoyaki recipe on JustBento, and I tried it right away. I was amazed by how easy it was. Then, to my pleasant surprise, I came across the recipe for tamagoyaki over at JustHungry, and I tried that. I was so excited when it came out similar tot he pictures.

ah, I love tamagoyaki!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Futomaki. Or really any kind of sushi or rollup. And lots of fresh fruit!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

i really love onigiri so it's a must in my tupperware bento :).

there are just too many recipes i like, here's one not only because it has a summer strawberry salad, but also for the gorgeous cypress bento box. and onigiri, of course. :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favourite bento food is shrimp. I like to pan-fry it and marinate it with salt and pepper. It tastes good with rice, in a sandwich, in a salad, or with noodles.

Thanks for hosting these contests.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

oh, well, my favorite lunch food is a typicall spanish salade: olives, tuna fish, carrot, combining this with different vegetables, sometimes beans, red peppers, adding shrimps and squares of potatoes and mayonnaise. Healthy and tasty. It calls "ensaladilla".

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I like Onigiri with tiny mushrooms sauteed in Teriyaki and soy sauce, they're sweet and refreshing when cold.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I have a small sized bento so most days I have to think about having meals that has all the nutrients in one cook.

The most suitable for me is cous cous with vegetables and beef/chicken because the cous cous covers all the small free space.

The recipe is in spanish but has a nice pseudo self explanatory video http://www.directoalpaladar.com/videos-recetas/cuscus-con-cordero-receta...

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento food changes with the season. So right now I just can't get enough of salads with fruits in it, but not fruit salads!
I like cantaloupe with mozzarella balls&basil, watermelon with feta cheese and black olives(that one is vaguely from Nigella Lawson I think), or in my last bento I had a grapefruit&avocado salad. So fresh, yummy and good looking.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favourite bento food is onigiri - in fact I don't mind having them for any meal, anywhere. It never gets boring.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love this recipe for takoyaki (octopus balls)!
http://lunchinabox.net/2007/06/27/making-takoyaki/

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

OUUUUUUH my favorite bento box is pepper rice with butter. Just rice because i dislike sugar food. (its true.... yes !)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I make bentos for my son and he loves onigiri. He will actually eat most of the things I stuff it with. :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Karaage is the best, love it ^.^
I balanced it with stir fry vegetables..

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love to alternate slices of smoked trout and slices of avocado, and spice it up with very very fresh goat cheese. This mix is just incredible, it is a heartbreaking pain to prepare the bento beforehand and not eat it right away, but it is kind of the point !

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

There are some items that are always right in my bentos: tamagoyaki, cherry tomatoes, baby corn. If I put some meat, I like some minced meat, trying to make it not to dry. Some rice is nice. Or noodles, if they don't stick together, or bread. And fruits of course. I don't have no specific recipe, I don't season my food a lot, I like to get the real taste of things...

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My fav is Panda blini(pancakes) with salmon in my Panda Bento.
http://s148.photobucket.com/albums/s31/pavluv1/?action=view&current=130-...
yum!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

That is a hard one...I do not get to eat this often due to the cost of ingredients but my absolute favorite bento food is haha probably a little blasphemous... its inarizushi with pickles inside it. I put pickles (usually aokappa, shibazuke or fukujinzuke) in an inari skin then add heavily vinegared sushi rice. Its soooooo good. Sweet, salty, crunchy and soft all at the same time. Oh man I'm drooling about it right now... I haven't had it in months!!!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I'm vegetarian who eats also fish sometimes and that's why i prefer veggie-bentos. (I'm kind a afraid of taking bentos with fish inside with me because of the hygiene possibilities. )
In my favorite bento, there are cooked barley grit with tofu and seasonal vegetables. I also add some fresh vegetables like cucumber, cherry tomatoes (they're nicely small to bento boxes) and carrot pieces. A fruit is the best dessert!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favourite recipe is... CURRY!
I like it because it's hot and spicy. I'm the kind of person who will eat a stew in the middle of Summer.

I don't really have a recipe but I usually base my currys in japanese curry, indian curry and dry indian curry.
I love to add carrot, and the apple just gives it a special taste.
I might even be crazy enough to add mint-like leafs, it's refreshing in this time of the year :3

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I'm new to the whole bento game so I don't have a favourite yet. And come to think of it, I don't have a favourite lunch food either... So this isn't really an answer but I hope it still counts!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

a mix of fresh berries with a few Meiji Apollo chocolates mixed in. It's relatively healthy, colourful and fun.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favourite bento piece at the moment is:
carrots, sliced into little fingers, heated and softened in the microwave with a little oil and some spices, then I add tuna, so that the carrots have little tuna ,hairs'.
tastes very good warm but also cold.

hope I win the give-away!
greetings from Germany
Beate

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My favourite bento food is definitely onigiri - I love rice and the fact I can add so many different fillings. The best one is smoked salmon ;] Oh, tamagoyaki is also veeeryyyy tasty :P

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love to take extra short-grain brown rice and shape it for bento, whether it's onigiri or log shapes..... I just think it's then fun to eat!!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favourite lunch food is my mothers chicken meat balls in tomato sauce with rice.

Add garlic, fresh parsley, salt, pepper and some garam masala to ground chicken. Form meatballs, fry them until golden on all sides, put them in a pot with a can of chopped tomatoes and boil until cooked through. Add a little bit of garam masala to the sauce too. Serve mith rice.

This tastes really spicy and nice even cold, and the tomato sauce keeps the meatballs juicy. And it's so easy! : )

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Your vegan iri doufu recipe...it is hands-down my favourite recipe right now. Could eat it all the time!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

my favorite bento food is fried chicken in any variety!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento foods are fresh fruits and vegetables with rice and noodles.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Maki, I got your book and it is AWESOME! Congratulations, you must be so proud! I can't wait to start building some bentos! One thing I'll make sure to put in for dessert are dried apricots, each one speared with two almonds so they look like orange rabbits with brown ears. Delish!

Edamame!

Edamame!

By far the greatest bento filler. I love pairing it with both asian and non-asian foods. Cold salty snack that comes with it's own wrapper, and I never EVER get tired of munching on it. (Even my boyfriend likes it...)

I always keep a bag or two of the frozen stuff in my freezer for bento time, or any time!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I normally Bento with leftovers and fresh veggies. Cherry tomatoes and baby carrots top the list, though I'm not opposed to gettin' crazy with a mix of dried fruit. My leftover has been pasta lately, usually eaten cold at lunch. Since it's summer and I have a basil plant, there's been pesto on the menu multiple times a week. I always top it off with a packet of miso soup. I'd be hard-pressed to find a better way to start work after lunch than with a comforting miso in my coffee mug.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento food is raw veggies (especially jicama, summer squash, corn, grape tomatoes and carrots), with hummus. I have it almost every day!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

We love filling our bentos with taco fillings and bringing the tortilla or shells on the side. But really, we love anything that will fit in the bento or what can be bento-ized. :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I've only just started with bentos, but I've seen some great Japanese Pot stickers (not sure what the real name is), that I would love to learn how to make. I really think they would make a great addition to our regular bentos.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Hmm... My favorite bento (well my go to bento) is actually a combo of recipe I got from here ^.^ it's turkey meatballs, kinpara and brown rice with sesame salt. It's easy, super tasty and I generally have all the ingredients in my stash. Honestly I think I eat this at least once a week and I've yet to tire of it.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love making Taiyaki. I ordered a pan off the internet and I just use pancake mix with either bean paste, peanut butter (with jelly dipping sauce), or a cooked sausage link inside. You can stick just about anything inside one of those taiyaki and I try to vary it as much as possible.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My daughter's favorite bento lunch is octopus made with Applegate Farms beef hot dogs! She loves it!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

broccoli with wasabi sauce is my absolute favourite!!! http://www.justhungry.com/broccoli-wasabi-sauce-wasabi-ae

along with plain edamame, and a small simple greek salad (tomato, cucumber, feta, olives)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Wow! These are brilliant!

For me, the best bento food is a veggie mince soboro against some nicely al dente white rice. Another recipe I love is this: http://justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/nimame-stewed-sweet-beans made with a mix of beans. These two are definitely the ones that make me salivate in anticipation...and perhaps lead me to taking lunch a little early!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My 5 year old son and I both love Bento with onigiri & beans and then a nice veggie mix, usually asparagus, grape tomatoes and carrots.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

How sweet! My favorite lunch food is leftovers from the night before!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

This summer it is Pasta Salad! Pasta with balsamico bianco and olive oil dressing - chicken- and a lot of vegetables :-)

In winter I prefer rice and easy japanese-crossover bento mixes with chicken and vegetables, but his summer I love pasta sald or..... couscous salad! yummy. I get hungry now, so I better stop and go to the fridge ;-)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I really like taking Morning Star fake chicken nuggets. They taste pretty good at room temperature, they're easy to pack, and you can do some pretty cute things with them.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

favorite bento food? There s so many it's hard to choose!
1-Tuna soboro, because it's so quick to do, it freezes well and it's yummy!
2- pepper confit. for the same reasons! The last time I defrost a portion n the microwave, it smelt even better than the day I made it!!

I love bento and co too, I have used this site a few times and their bento stuff is lovely!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Onigiri!!!! All sort of fillings, they're the best :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I like dinner leftovers for lunch or salad made with fresh veggies, chicken or shrimp and maybe some pasta mixed in.
