Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Bento fans all over the world know about Bento&co. Based in Kyoto, Japan, Bento&co sells only bento boxes and related products, and their ever-evolving catalog features items reflecting the best of Japanese bento box design, from cute to modern-minimalist to traditional. It’s also one of the few online stores catering to the international market that carries real Japanese wood and stainless steel bento boxes. All the products they carry are made in Japan, with the exception of some bento accessories that are designed in Japan and manufactured in China.

And, this is the item they’re giving away. It’s the impossibly cute Kokeshi Bento box! I understand that these have been flying off their shelves, so I’m really glad that we can give away one right here on JustBento. One lucky winner will win their choice of one of the Kokeshi Bento boxes pictured below.

bentoco-kokeshibento-all.jpg

A kokeshi is a traditional Japanese doll made of turned wood. They originated in the northern parts of Honshuu, the main island in Japan, but nowadays you see them sold everywhere in Japan. Japanese people love kokeshi; they’re so iconic that Nintendo took their inspiration for the Mii avatars used in Wii games from the kokeshi form.

The Kokeshi Bento box is made to look like a kokeshi doll, but is made of practical, microwave-safe plastic (remove the inner lids before microwaving). The box has three main parts: two stacking round layers for your regular bento food with leakproof lids, plus a small bowl that can be used for soup, fruit, cereal, and so on. (Note that the bowl is not water-tight; the idea is to bring along a packet of instant soup or your own vegetable soup concentrate, and to add hot water in the bowl with the soup mix when you’re ready to eat.) The bowl inverts on top of the stack to form the head of each kokeshi character, and a bento band is included to hold things together.

The total capacity of the box is 640ml - 200ml for each stacking tier, and 240ml for the bowl. It’s suitable for adults with small appetites.

Although I don't often have time to make it, my favorite bento stuffer is spinach tamagoyaki--edamame and carrot kinpira on the side. Oh, yum.

It's hard to choose just one but I'd have to say my favorite is mini-meatballs (made with lamb and beef) with a savory sauce! Yum!

I really love just chicken and rice! Always tasty and easy! :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Those kokeshi are awesome! It'd be a nice addition to ANY bento collection.

My favorite bento ingredient is carrot! Here's my personal adaptation to a local recipe, with accompanying bento picture: http://baonkobento.wordpress.com/2010/08/18/carrot-kaldereta/

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My favourite bento food is Tamagoyaki!! It's simple and you can add different ingredients, just according to what you would like to have that day...no matter if it's vegetables or rather cheese.^^

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I've only done a couple of bentos, but other than leftovers, I'm a big fan of the bacon-wrapped tofu bento. It gives the tofu a great taste and is great accompanied by broccoli and veggies!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Onigiri!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

No doubt about it! My favorite bento/lunch food is nori all the way. It might be strange to eat it by itself, but it's just so delicious. My jr. high friend's mother would always buy extra just so we could snack on it throughout the day. Or we would sit at her kitchen table with a big bowl of sushi rice and take turns picking up a small portion with a our sheets of nori. The feeling you get when you put it in your mouth, like it's dissolving, it's the best feeling! It's the best taste!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

when I actually eat lunch at work, i usually always look forward to the greek chicken salad and pita bread sold across the way from my job back home. :]

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I love this chicken dish I learned from my roommate who is from Bangladesh. It works well in my bento box with rice and steamed veggies.

Onigiri love!

gotta say I'm not much of a chef. However, I love to put onigiris and carved fruit flowers into my bentos, as well as sausage octopii... Sometimes with soba and seaweed to make it look like an underwater scene. I love bento art!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I really like packing up my spam musubi or homemade mochi.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Definitely tamagoyaki first, but there are a lot of close seconds. I can only have so much tamagoyaki because I count calories. :( It took me a long time to get where I could consistently make them properly, but I'm always proud of the ones I make now, and I admit I look at other people's pictures of bento with a superior air about it.

Sort of like "Well, that other person's bento may be overall aesthetically and nutritionally superior, but look how much nicer my tamagoyaki are!"

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My favourite bento would be the Noriben recipe I found on JB. I love it and often make it even if I'm not going out! Nom nom noriben! xxx

My favorite bento food is anything shaped like hello kitty :) I also like colorful presentations even if it's not HK :)

I love miso soup!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

It's hard to pick one favorite, but I think my absolute favorite bento was one that used your recipe for meat soboro in potato oyaki. Mmmmmmmmm :-) Here's a link to that bento here in case anyone reading this hasn't seen it yet: http://justbento.com/bento-no-17-potato-oyaki-bento-wakame-sunomono

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

TAMAGO. Give me a good couple of pieces of tamago and I'm set.

Though popular bento stuff I make are apparently my mini-potato croquettes (italian style). They go over really well.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My favorite bento food is potato oyaki (recipe here on Just Bento). Though a close second is smoked salmon, neufchatel cheese, spinach and tortilla rollups.

My favorite bento foods are tamagoyaki and onigiri with furikake!! Yum, Yum!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My first thought was inari. I rarely have it though. I love fresh fruit and vegetables.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Wow, those are cute!
I'm a bento beginner, so mine aren't fancy, but I like adding fruit. I have a bit of a sweet tooth, and fruit is a nice dessert that's still in the "healthy" catagory.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I like Onigiri the most in my bento. But my Onigiri normally look a bit funny because I'm a beginner in making bentos. But I do my best to get better =)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I'm terribly obsessed with inari-zushi stuffed with all sorts of seaweed and smoked salmon. They're my weakness.

I love last night's leftovers for lunch. I'm especially fond of rice, teriyaki chicken and broccoli. Yum!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Right now my Bentos are easy and cold. Rather, they are not warm. So salads and sandwiches and fruit. And don't forget the chocolate for dessert!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My favorite bento foods are onigiris. They are easy to make and delicious. I also like tuna and other fish recipies.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My favorite bento food is small slices of okonomiyaki! It has lots of good vegtables and it's an easy way to sneak veggies into my little sister's bento :D I like it and so do the rest of the family. It easily fits into bento and you can also cut it into little rounds for small hands :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Mmm, my favorite bento food is Yaki Udon. Yummy!!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I love these bento boxes! So clever and cute!

My favorite bento food is actually a recipe that I got from this site -- Bite Size Chicken Teriyaki.

http://justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/bite-size-chicken-teriyaki-for-be...

I use this recipe as a fall back when I'm not able to come up with something more creative. It's easy, delicious, and never fails to make me smile when I have it for lunch.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My favorite bento is mini meatloaf with mashed potatoes and vegetables in the winter. In the warmer months I love cut up veggies with ranch dressing and spam fried rice.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

The best one I've made so far was pulled pork (made in the slow cooker overnight) with homemade barbeque sauce served over brown rice and a homemade cabbage and apple coleslaw.

Definitely not traditional, or even Japanese, but it was one of the tastiest boxed lunches I've made yet.

This was the recipe I used for the slaw:

http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Cabbage-and-Apple-Slaw-1340...

I can't give you the recipe for the sauce. It's my mom's family recipe and she asked me not to share it :( sorry. I can tell you that it's just a basic homemade one meant for making ribs. Ketchup based with sugar, vinegar etc. I think it might have originally been meant for beef, but we've always used it on pork.
