Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Bento fans all over the world know about Bento&co. Based in Kyoto, Japan, Bento&co sells only bento boxes and related products, and their ever-evolving catalog features items reflecting the best of Japanese bento box design, from cute to modern-minimalist to traditional. It’s also one of the few online stores catering to the international market that carries real Japanese wood and stainless steel bento boxes. All the products they carry are made in Japan, with the exception of some bento accessories that are designed in Japan and manufactured in China.

And, this is the item they’re giving away. It’s the impossibly cute Kokeshi Bento box! I understand that these have been flying off their shelves, so I’m really glad that we can give away one right here on JustBento. One lucky winner will win their choice of one of the Kokeshi Bento boxes pictured below.

bentoco-kokeshibento-all.jpg

A kokeshi is a traditional Japanese doll made of turned wood. They originated in the northern parts of Honshuu, the main island in Japan, but nowadays you see them sold everywhere in Japan. Japanese people love kokeshi; they’re so iconic that Nintendo took their inspiration for the Mii avatars used in Wii games from the kokeshi form.

The Kokeshi Bento box is made to look like a kokeshi doll, but is made of practical, microwave-safe plastic (remove the inner lids before microwaving). The box has three main parts: two stacking round layers for your regular bento food with leakproof lids, plus a small bowl that can be used for soup, fruit, cereal, and so on. (Note that the bowl is not water-tight; the idea is to bring along a packet of instant soup or your own vegetable soup concentrate, and to add hot water in the bowl with the soup mix when you’re ready to eat.) The bowl inverts on top of the stack to form the head of each kokeshi character, and a bento band is included to hold things together.

The total capacity of the box is 640ml - 200ml for each stacking tier, and 240ml for the bowl. It’s suitable for adults with small appetites.

I'm answering on my toddler's behalf b/c he loves the facial expressions on the bento boxes.

My favorite lunch items are macaroni, spinach mashed potatoes and steamed veggies.

These bento boxes will be perfect for his first time at daycare.

Wow, these are so cute! My favorite bento item is a salad with tons of colorful veggies and dressing in a cute container by the side. Thanks! Danika

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Tonkatsu is my favorite bento food. Any tasty, savory leftover to eat with onigari works for me.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

It's got to be... Karaage!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

What cute bentos. I love to do meats and cheeses with yogurt and berries.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

An oldie but a goody, I think my favourite would have to be onigiri, because I can make them in a hurry (I cheat and use mould so I don't burn my hands), and they can be eaten plain or fancied up. Our hanami season is coming up and I'll be making them for our picnic, plain for the kids and with umeboshi for the grown ups, wrapped in plastic covered nori just like from a konbini.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I haven't made a lot of Japanese style bentos but I really love a good salad with a simple homemade dressing. And sandwiches. I heart sandwiches.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Huli Huli chicken and rice!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Ah well, I love the sweet and salty pickled radishes. I make them with maple syrup though!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I don't have a favorite bento item because I've never made one. I have been wanting to but haven't found any containers and it is hard to buy one online for the first time without being able to see how big it is! I would love to win this. It is so cute.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento food would be a mini burger patty -- the recipe that Maki posted here is pretty tasty and goes well with most other things I put in the bento.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

love love from NYC!! cute :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento food right now is tomatoes. They are in season and so perfect right now. Last month, I probably would have said garden fresh peas :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I just started making bentos to get ready to bring them to school for lunch. I usually use left overs from what I had for dinner but teriyaki chicken with veggies and rice is always great for me!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento/lunch food? Reallllly tough...but I have to pick noodles! So quick and easy.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I'm just beginning with actual bento, but I've been making korean-inspired bulgogi for years. I usually reserve some of the beef from our dinner portions, eating it for lunch cold with marinated mung bean salad and leftover rice.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento food really does have to be the rice. When I actually bother to make it correctly, it's just a little layer of happiness in my lunch.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Rice and curry :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Typical, I know, but I LOVE ONIGIRI! They're so easy to make and almost anything is good as a filling; I make them for my family when I'm out of ideas or ingredients. <3

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I just started making bento box lunches. my favorite is fried rice with unagi and some veggies on the side. a nice piece of fruit like strawberry and some blueberries to top it off.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My most favorite bento/lunch food is the lemon-soy chicken nuggets from this site! My son had them for his very first kindergarten lunch last week!! :D
We probably make them at least once a week - sometimes more depending on how cheaply we were able to buy chicken and lemons/limes.
The tangy/salty/meaty flavor mixed with a bite of plain rice is soooooooooooo good! I've even made them for a "midnight" snack a few times.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favourite Bento food is ham and cheese roll ups... if I knew where I found the recipe I'd post it (it might even have been this website, I've gotten a lot of tips from here!), but it's really simple. I'm sure everyone has tried a variation of it at some point. Heck, it's probably already been posted. :)

Take a slice of ham or another preferred meat, a slice of processed cheese/swiss cheese/whatever you prefer and a small wrap. roll it up, put food picks or a toothpicks through it, then slice it sideways and pack. Simple, quick and tasty. :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

egg and onigiri :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite lunch to pack is miso chicken & asparagus stirfry on white rice. Simple and easy -- and filling!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Salmon and soy sauce served over rice is always a bento meal that can cheer up any day.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite is very simple, just Miso Soup, Rice, Pickles and an umeboshi for dessert!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Right now my favorite is Ochazuke, or some kind of rice porridge - because my stomach has been upset.

The things I probably put in my bento most often when I'm not sick is the carrot kinpira and baked lemon salmon. :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

OMG these are soo cute! XD!! I love them!! My fave bento meal is gyoza, rice (of course) and broccoli/string beans...yum!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento is onigiri triangle made with rice, broccoli, and salman, and wrapped with one sheet of nori. I also like having cooked vegetables and fresh fruit on the side. Having it just makes my day :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favourite is peanut butter and nutella sandwich with fruit :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Big Fan of justBento and was thinking about buying this item actually!

Ok, I love onigiri, with some carrots kinpira, using your recipe actually! Gyoza is also nice, as well as cherry tomatoes.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Leftovers!!! especially chicken and beans!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I've just discovered what Bento is via this site and so have no favourites at the moment. But I still thought I'd enter as my daughter will love one of these for lunch! However with the basic knowledge I'm gaining re lunch boxes (my 4 year old will need to take lunch from september and so I'm researching alternatives to sandwiches which she hates!), I would fill a box with 2 part rice (we're Asian, rice is in our blood), 1 part chicken satay (which she loves and helps to make) and 2 part raw veg eg beans, tomatoes, cucumbers. I would also add a carrot cake muffin.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite has to be rice. It goes with so many things and can be made so many different ways! I love just plain white rice, or with nori flakes on top, or shaped into onigiri with or without fillings, or brown rice...There's just so many ways to eat it that I simply can't get enough and I never get tired of it :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My fav bento food to pack would be a soup - that's also a must for me - must have soup for lunch :) Ironically (or maybe not), my "bento" soup is typically not japanese, think mushroom, tomato basil, french onion, etc

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love kinpira gobo with musubi!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento is basically Bento #2, the chicken donburi. I make it all the time, though my vegetables tend to be carrots, broccoli and celery instead of peppers.

My little sister frequently begs me for your carrots kinpira.
