Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Bento fans all over the world know about Bento&co. Based in Kyoto, Japan, Bento&co sells only bento boxes and related products, and their ever-evolving catalog features items reflecting the best of Japanese bento box design, from cute to modern-minimalist to traditional. It’s also one of the few online stores catering to the international market that carries real Japanese wood and stainless steel bento boxes. All the products they carry are made in Japan, with the exception of some bento accessories that are designed in Japan and manufactured in China.

And, this is the item they’re giving away. It’s the impossibly cute Kokeshi Bento box! I understand that these have been flying off their shelves, so I’m really glad that we can give away one right here on JustBento. One lucky winner will win their choice of one of the Kokeshi Bento boxes pictured below.

bentoco-kokeshibento-all.jpg

A kokeshi is a traditional Japanese doll made of turned wood. They originated in the northern parts of Honshuu, the main island in Japan, but nowadays you see them sold everywhere in Japan. Japanese people love kokeshi; they’re so iconic that Nintendo took their inspiration for the Mii avatars used in Wii games from the kokeshi form.

The Kokeshi Bento box is made to look like a kokeshi doll, but is made of practical, microwave-safe plastic (remove the inner lids before microwaving). The box has three main parts: two stacking round layers for your regular bento food with leakproof lids, plus a small bowl that can be used for soup, fruit, cereal, and so on. (Note that the bowl is not water-tight; the idea is to bring along a packet of instant soup or your own vegetable soup concentrate, and to add hot water in the bowl with the soup mix when you’re ready to eat.) The bowl inverts on top of the stack to form the head of each kokeshi character, and a bento band is included to hold things together.

The total capacity of the box is 640ml - 200ml for each stacking tier, and 240ml for the bowl. It’s suitable for adults with small appetites.

Honestly, my favorite bento food is either rice or edamame. I know neither is really too difficult to make but I love how easy and delicious they are. Especially when I freeze the rice wrapped in saran wrap. Then the next day I just microwave it really quick and I get (almost) fresh steamed rice. So delicious, especially with soy paste. :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love having tons of cooked veggies, usually fried in a pan. I like to include tons of sugar peas, broccoli, mushrooms, carrots, and bell peppers. Its great to go on the side with anything and its really colorful as well. I try to use some chili flakes as well when i'm frying them.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite lunch food is cold soba noodles with a plain dipping sauce. It's what I eat when I have almost no time to cook a proper lunch.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I've just started packing my lunch since 1 to 2 weeks so i actually haven't tried out much dishes. Nevertheless, my favourite so far is steamed salmon fish with lady fingers (add little oil to steam)-- yum yum!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Lovely boxes. Some of my favourites are fried meat and green beans.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento food is leftover vegetarian lasagna.

I'm brand new to bento, but I love quinoa, I look forward to trying a variety of quinoa recipes!

Thanks!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento food is simple onigiri (no filling) and seaweed salad. I could eat this every day!
Onigiri recipe from this site: http://www.justhungry.com/2007/01/onigiri_omusubi_revisited_an_e.html
seaweed salad here: http://japanesefood.about.com/od/salad/r/cuwakamesalad.htm

I like donburi with chicken or beef, negimaki, tamagoyaki, all sorts of pickles, cold soba and somen noodles, sushi/kimbap, grilled tofu, brown rice sprinkled with gomashio, kinpira, miso-glazed salmon....ahm........I've got to go....I'm getting hungry. ; )

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite thing to pack are mini tsukune burgers. I use the recipe Maki has on this site. They're so versatile!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I would have to say anytype of Veggies.
I am trying to boarden my intake of them so to dress them up and make it fun; makes consuming them easy!

Thanks Bento~! :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I like all of diet bento foods.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

This is the cutiest jar I have seen yet. My question is I need help. I just discovered this and have a child that brings her lunch to school. Do you have some beginner recipes? She loves vegetables. She is allergic to dye so I need ideas on products, shaps, where to buy, essentially everything. I live in the United States in Louisiana. Please Help!!!!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Leftover whatever we had for dinner with some fresh veg and fruit.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I don't have a favorite lunch food. I make sandwiches every day, but I'm getting tired of them, so I came here. I'm super excited to try all the recipes. But if I had to pick a favorite lunch, I'd say. . . teriyaki chicken.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

my fave it a mixed green salad topped with tuna, ans a dressing with soy sauce, sesame oil, lime juice, and apple juice.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento food is croquette. I make my own at home with left over vegetables and mash potatoes that aren't mashed too much so they have a really nice texture.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento is a grilled chicken/apple sausage, a boiled egg, rice, edamame, and cherry tomatoes. And, most importantly, a little bite of something chocolate!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love recipes made with tofu.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I loved italian food. But my wife said I have to eat something healthier so I searched for recipes and I found this gorgeous page. I'm a fan of this foods and it's practical too to put them in those nice boxes.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

my fave bento food that I pack when I have the leftovers are usually:

grandma's homemade chicken curry with stirfried veggies (totally Asian) and I'll top it off with an apple (or some fruit that's easy to bring)

otherwise I'd go with ham and cheese sandwich, salad and an apple =3

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

my favourite bento is anything my husband makes me :) but if i had a choice it would be miso glazed chicken, broccoli and carrot kinpira cooked with sambal olek and brown rice with an umeboshi on top.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

One of my favorite bento lunches is sushi rice, nori, tuna fish, furikake and green beans.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

my allergies limit me quite a bit on wat i actually can use in the meals so i usualy put sliced meat and fresh fruits in mine :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love onigiri with juicy salted fillings, but without nori, my tongue isn't not used to it yet! And thank you for your awesome blogs! A French fan

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Broccoli.... Mmmmmmmmmm!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Grape tomatoes! They're great on salads or to just pack between other foods.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite is cooked spinach with peanut sauce (just ground peanuts, a little mirin and a little soy sauce). You can make the sauce in a little food chopper, then add in a few lightly chopped nuts at the end for more texture.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento food is definitely croquettes. The basic potato base is so versatile, and I've always got some ingredients on hand. Plus, they taste great at room temperature.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Babybel cheeses are my bento staples. The bright red color and the creamy texture really round out lunch.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento food is derived from this salmon recipe here: http://www.thesalmons.org/lynn/salmon-wasabi.html ...I make it using smaller pieces of salmon than indicated in the recipe, use milk instead of cream, and bake it in the oven instead of frying it (finishing it under the broiler will beautifully brown the outside). Then I add a few drops of sesame oil alongside the soy sauce. It is delicious served hot, cold, or at room temperature. Oooh yummy.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Anything fresh and veggie-lish is what I like. The kids' first day back at school and what have I been doing the whole time? Looking at bento ideas. They'll enjoy lunch this year!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

A good old tuna fish sandwich, with my mom's homemade zucchini relish.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My fav lunchboxfood is salad.
But for my kid I make sandwiched with the shape of a locomotief

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love gobo kinpira and beef rolls with vegetables. So quick and easy - and delicious, too!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Umeboshi, hands down. Why are they so terribly addictive??? The little, all-natural ones I buy from Mitsuwa are the best. Once I found some that had honey in the marinade--so good!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love homemade chicken gyoza from this recipe at My Lunch Can Beat Up Your Lunch!
http://www.c4vct.com/kym/bento/gyoza.htm

(sorry if this is a duplicate! I didn't get the "your comment will be posted" notice I usually get so wasn't sure it went through!)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I have a lot of favorites when it comes to making bentos, but if i have to choose i would pick onigiri! it is easy to make and anything can be used for the stuffing and the best part is that you can eat it with nori. x)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Brown rice with tofu and bokchoy. It's healthy and filling! I don't have a link to the recipe but this is what I cook the tofu and bokchoy in:

White miso paste
Soy sauce
A drop of sesame oil
Sriracha sauce

I just whisk it all together with a tiny bit of water. I fry the tofu first, then add the bokchoy and braise everything with the sauce.

On the side I usually have a fruit - tangerine, blueberries, strawberries.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favourite bento snack is fruit fritters x

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I like onigiri with red bean paste the best. My favorite thing that I make all the time though is fried noodles with oyster sauce and leftover fish or mock crab.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

i love to make falafel balls and bring them with some homemade hummus, veggies and pita! yummmm

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento food has got to be your bite sized teriyaki. I've been making a big batch each week for the last 3 weeks. That plus some pre-cooked frozen brown rice, and steamed veggie mix makes a great lunch.
