Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Bento fans all over the world know about Bento&co. Based in Kyoto, Japan, Bento&co sells only bento boxes and related products, and their ever-evolving catalog features items reflecting the best of Japanese bento box design, from cute to modern-minimalist to traditional. It’s also one of the few online stores catering to the international market that carries real Japanese wood and stainless steel bento boxes. All the products they carry are made in Japan, with the exception of some bento accessories that are designed in Japan and manufactured in China.

And, this is the item they’re giving away. It’s the impossibly cute Kokeshi Bento box! I understand that these have been flying off their shelves, so I’m really glad that we can give away one right here on JustBento. One lucky winner will win their choice of one of the Kokeshi Bento boxes pictured below.

bentoco-kokeshibento-all.jpg

A kokeshi is a traditional Japanese doll made of turned wood. They originated in the northern parts of Honshuu, the main island in Japan, but nowadays you see them sold everywhere in Japan. Japanese people love kokeshi; they’re so iconic that Nintendo took their inspiration for the Mii avatars used in Wii games from the kokeshi form.

The Kokeshi Bento box is made to look like a kokeshi doll, but is made of practical, microwave-safe plastic (remove the inner lids before microwaving). The box has three main parts: two stacking round layers for your regular bento food with leakproof lids, plus a small bowl that can be used for soup, fruit, cereal, and so on. (Note that the bowl is not water-tight; the idea is to bring along a packet of instant soup or your own vegetable soup concentrate, and to add hot water in the bowl with the soup mix when you’re ready to eat.) The bowl inverts on top of the stack to form the head of each kokeshi character, and a bento band is included to hold things together.

The total capacity of the box is 640ml - 200ml for each stacking tier, and 240ml for the bowl. It’s suitable for adults with small appetites.

It was the first recipe I made from your site and I make it often, especially in the winter when salad ingredients are more expensive.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I know it is not traditional bento food, but I love to use a bento for Indian food! A three-tier bento like this adorable kokeshi would be perfect because I could put dal in one section, chutney in another, and some torn naan bread in the last!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I like making vegetable flowers and shapes to decorate around onigiri. Looking at website pictures of shaped rice animals and faces is inspirational when bento making!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Some of my favorite bentos I've packed are the simplest, such as fresh or steamed vegetables with some form of carbohydrate.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento food is rice! I love perfectly cooked rice. I started college last year, and bought a 3-cup Zojirushi rice cooker so I could have perfect rice whenever I wanted.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite lunch staple is curried lentils over brown rice, something I've loved since I've read the guest post here a year or so ago. Its filling, tasty, and healthy, especially with the addition of a side serving of fresh fruit. And a tall glass of iced sweet tea....

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love having fruit in my bento box to give it a bit of colour and also a fun way to make sure I'm eating my daily fruit serving. Strawberries, rockmelon, dried apricots... delish!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Too hard to pick one! I love last night's leftovers (like vegetarian chilli con not-carne or quiche) with a side of salad, something fresh and crunchy to keep me awake during the afternoon at work!

Onigiri filled with ume-boshi. DELICIOUS. Often with a side of carrot kinpira or cellery.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

my bento box is filled with cooked salmon, white rice, side of green beans, a small side of Chinese sausage, and a fruit cup. yellow curry on white rice sounds good too..

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

i'm hoping to win this for my girlfriend, the few times she made a bento box for me it was kind of embarrassing to eat at work. she likes to make faces in the food and has some shape cut outs so the guys at work gave me a hard time about it. i like it when she makes me the french fries with sliced steak and a side of rice. she tries to make it look like lava(steak) was coming of the volcano(mountain of rice).

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I haven't really made many bentos, but so far my favourite bento food is the torihamu from this very site. :D
I kind of messed up when I first made it, and undercooked the chicken, but every other time I've done it since has been perfect. It goes so well with everything too. Yum. :D

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favourite Bento would have ume or tuna stuffed onigiri, grilled tofu and some veggies (and a mini-chocolate muffin for dessert) :-)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I'm new to bentos and don't have a favorite food yet.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favourites are definitely tamagoyaki and steamed vegetables. I like simple foods in my bento.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favourite has to be ONIGIRI !

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Just when you thought bentos could not get any cuter....!

I love cherry tomatoes in my lunch!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Anything with eggs, they're just the most perfect takeaway protein.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love inventing new bento recipes :) Last week I made couscous with sauted leek, corn, bean sprouts, dried tomatoes rehidrated with olive oil and water, sesame seeds and oven roasted chicken slices. I dressed it with a bit of soy sauce, salt and pepper. Both my boyfriend and I enjoyed that bento a lot!! Having a good bento at work helps us going through our day :D
Thank you for your greaaaaaat blog!
It makes me feel closer to Japan
Cris

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favourite by far is rice in every way, especially whole rice "veg-sushi-style" ^_^ and I love salads, too: they're so colourful and healthy!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Can I write my bento in french ? =D
Mon bento c'est une base simple :
Prendre les restes de la veille !

Essentiellement du riz, de la viande et des légumes !
Mais il faut aussi un bento selon la saison =)
Crudités, sandwich, etc font bon ménage.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento/lunch food is tonkatsu on top of a bed of finely sliced cabbage (at least try to make this as healthy as possible) with some white rice (I try to add barley and brown rice to make this healthier, too.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite is onigiri. Well, rice balls with some sort of filling, at least. Not really the traditional filling.
