Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Bento fans all over the world know about Bento&co. Based in Kyoto, Japan, Bento&co sells only bento boxes and related products, and their ever-evolving catalog features items reflecting the best of Japanese bento box design, from cute to modern-minimalist to traditional. It’s also one of the few online stores catering to the international market that carries real Japanese wood and stainless steel bento boxes. All the products they carry are made in Japan, with the exception of some bento accessories that are designed in Japan and manufactured in China.

And, this is the item they’re giving away. It’s the impossibly cute Kokeshi Bento box! I understand that these have been flying off their shelves, so I’m really glad that we can give away one right here on JustBento. One lucky winner will win their choice of one of the Kokeshi Bento boxes pictured below.

bentoco-kokeshibento-all.jpg

A kokeshi is a traditional Japanese doll made of turned wood. They originated in the northern parts of Honshuu, the main island in Japan, but nowadays you see them sold everywhere in Japan. Japanese people love kokeshi; they’re so iconic that Nintendo took their inspiration for the Mii avatars used in Wii games from the kokeshi form.

The Kokeshi Bento box is made to look like a kokeshi doll, but is made of practical, microwave-safe plastic (remove the inner lids before microwaving). The box has three main parts: two stacking round layers for your regular bento food with leakproof lids, plus a small bowl that can be used for soup, fruit, cereal, and so on. (Note that the bowl is not water-tight; the idea is to bring along a packet of instant soup or your own vegetable soup concentrate, and to add hot water in the bowl with the soup mix when you’re ready to eat.) The bowl inverts on top of the stack to form the head of each kokeshi character, and a bento band is included to hold things together.

The total capacity of the box is 640ml - 200ml for each stacking tier, and 240ml for the bowl. It’s suitable for adults with small appetites.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My favourite is gyoza!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I love onigiri! I could eat them every day! With different filling for some variety :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I haven't made a ton of bentos, but so far my favorite foods are onigiri with salmon, and sakura denbu/chicken soboro over rice. :-)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My choice is all- American. Ham sandwich with some cooked vegetable, broccoli, cauliflower and some tomato.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My favorite bento is roasted marinated tempeh with rice & furikake.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I love fried rice and Yakisoba noodles and can't decide between the two. If I absolutely have to I'd go for the fried rice, though. Fried rice with lots of mung bean sprouts (if available) and vegetables or some salad and a little dessert as sidedishes. Ah, mung bean sprouts are so delicious!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I don't eat bentos too much, but like having rice with some meat and/or fresh veggies.
Thanks!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Spicy Matzo Ball Soup with Goldfish crackers!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I love fried rice in Bentos. I actually love fried rice anywhere I can get it! I mike make some rice so I can make some fried rice later on today!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Strawberries with key lime juice and white rice. Mmm....

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I am absolutely torn between rice with miso soup, or rice, pickles, and mini-sausages. I don't usually have a lot of time to make lunches, and even simple bentos can really make my day.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I love to fill my bento with various combinations, but my fav is tuna filling onigiri or inarisushi with furikake on top, brocolli, tamagoyaki and cherry tomato. Yum... yum

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

i love simple bentos with just a salad & fresh fruit.

these kokeshi bento boxes are so cute!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Tsukune desu!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My favorite item for my bento is a recipe I got off this site - Spanish Tortilla http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/my-version-spanish...
It's great hot or cold and goes well with a salad or lightly steamed veggies.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Those are the cutest bento ever, I love the maid one! X3 Hm.. favorite bento recipe... Well, it may not be anything remotely Japanese, but my favorite thing to pack is some room-temp/slightly-still-warm corned beef or meatballs, sometimes with rice but also with the little golden potatoes or even just by themselves with grapes or something in another smaller container. Sooo simple and good, and since I'm eating it, I don't worry about presentation (though I always pack more to give to friends at lunch <3 ). Another simple one is just leftover steak and rice, it's amazingly good if it stays warm in my thermal thermos-box-thing. I want to be able to try out new recipes, though I am extremely limited (first year in college, no kicthen in our dorm court :\ )

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I have a Kokeshi doll from Japan that I love!! :) I don't have a favorite bento food because we are just starting out. Waiting for our box order to arrive so we can start trying out some fun things. Love your blog! :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Lunch would have to include colorful fruit for sure - pineapple, strawberries, blueberries, and peaches. There has to be some green (salad) and orange (carrots). As long as there is color, I would eat any type of bento :D

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I like to make pan noodles on Sunday afternoon and then use them throughout the week in my bento with various spicy sauces/leftover veggies/toppings (nuts, black sesame seeds, marinated tofu). This cuts down on prep time and allows me to use leftovers from dinner in new ways for lunch. Midweek I usually make some vegan California rolls and enjoy those on Thursdays and Fridays in my lunch. It's important that anything I put in my bento be really easy to eat (and enjoyable!) so that I can eat while I work, if needed.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My favorite bento is rice with karaage and some salad. Yum!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Hard-boiled eggs (molded), brown rice (molded), fresh veggies, fresh fruits, and one piece of brightly wrapped chocolate!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My favorite things to put in my Bento are penguins. Fear not, they are made with olives and cream cheese, not actual penguins. I stumbled across the recipe while looking for vegetarian appetizers for a friend. I believe the recipe may have originated at Once Upon A Plate but I found it at the site below which has some good photos:
http://www.jamies-recipes.com/2009/12/penguin-appetizers/

I use low-fat cream cheese and sometimes stuff the penguins with chives or smoked salmon before adding the cream cheese. All of my coworkers make a big fuss whenever I have these in my bento.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Favourite bento food is onigiri - a few smallish ones with different fillings.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Fried chicken and pasta salad

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My fav thing that I've put in a bento box sofar, that I've been extremely excited to eat for my lunch at work, is sushi! I'm just giddy all day about that. :D

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My fave food for bento is pretty easy, its onigiri covert with furikake =)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My favorite lunch to pack is a fresh salad with lots of yummy and healthy toppings. Thanks for the giveaway!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I would have to say miso, even if it's not a dish on it's own. Whether it's on meat, veggies, eggs or just a bowl of soup it's always my favorite flavor! :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My favourite bento meal is the Japanese egg omlette, I often make it and I love the taste of eggs with soy sauce. *^v^*

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I am new to Bento but I like steamed pak choi with anything.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Hi Maki,
interestingly I had to answer that question lately, too. So I had to think short.
I like rice most. In nearly every bento I made was some rice, Onigiri, plain rice or fried rice. Combined with some vegetable and some protein it is perfect. As vegetable I like most spinach, salad and mushrooms. At times I add some dessert or sweets.
Those bento boxes are really cute. I'm so glad you showed them.
Greetings

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

tamagoyak!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I love salads, pasta, seafood, and lemon rice, but I'm not sure I really have a favorite. It just goes by what kind of mood I'm in when I'm making my lunch.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I love, love, love Bento and Co...and I love, love, love any cold or room temp pasta dish for my bento lunch!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Nothing revolutionary here - miso soup and brown rice with soy sauce! Though, when I have a real bento box, I hope to create lunches with more pizzaz! =)
thank you for this chance!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I love, love, LOVE your Red Wine Vinegar chicken. It has that sweet sort of tanginess to it that really brightens up my lunch. That and store-bought yogurt-covered pretzels - I've been meaning to learn how to make my own.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

hmm my favorite bentos to make are the ones with onigiri in them :D i love almost any onigiri but my recent favorite has been spinach and shredded teriyaki chicken. yum!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

There is one thing that is required for every bento box I made (per my husband's demands): tamagoyaki.

While I can't remember the original recipe (from a very fancy bento cookbook I got years ago), I've adapted it until what it is now. 1/2 a cup of Better n Eggs egg substitute (works better than Egg Beaters by a massive amount), 1 tablespoon sugar, 1 tablespoon sake. Mix together, pour in small heated saucepan, then fold over bit by bit until fully cooked and rolled.

Slice into six pieces, put four in his box and two in mine. :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My favorite is rice, chicken curry, egg and salad. Yum!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I have to say my favorite bento item is tsukemono. Takuan (dikon) are my favorite, but I find it hard to find any here in the states that taste as good as the kind I had in Japan. My sister is living in a remote village in the Kumamoto prefecture (so beautiful, I highly recommend a visit!) and got me my own tsukemono pickle press (http://tiny.cc/er04b). I make spicy pickled cabbage, onion, cucumber and carrots almost daily!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

So difficult to chose one favorite bento food. I have to say my favorite food is one that I can share with others. Preferably a finger food because that is more fun.

If I had to say just one food item maybe hand rolled sushi with a variety of fillings, especially vegetables. That always gets people interested and they enjoy it!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I love pickles! I know - it isn't really the main part of the bento, but in my house they go with almost everything. Every time I put in my sister's homemade sweet ginger pickles, I am excited to open the box. I ususally save them for dessert! :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Oooh! I'd have the best lunch box in the break room!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Those bentos are super cute!
My favorite is rice with furikake and some leftover from the day before :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

chicken karaage!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Onigiri! Quick to make and you can use leftover food for filling..

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My favourite bentos are usually just left overs from previous dinner. I always make more so there's enough for lunch the next day.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Musubi. Any kind. Rice and nori ftw!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

These are adorable!

My favorite bento is a very simple stir-fry chicken in Soy Vey's Very Very Teriyaki with zucchinis and yellow peppers, with rice. I have it for lunch a lot.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Oh my, those are unbelievably adorable, and I have been staring at them ever since they appeared on the Bento & Co. website, so I'm excited at the chance to win one of them :D!

As for my favourite bento dish, it's just plain onigiri, most of the time with tuna filling :). If it's not bento but a lunch at home, I really love Hokkaido-style shichuu/stew.
