Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

My mom packed bento boxes for me growing up, so I'm used to the concept. I didn't have the inspiration to pack my own boxes until stumbling across justbento.com and finding all the great recipes for freezer stash items. Now I pack my own lunch every day.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I found bentos through watching Anime and Ghibli films, sounds silly I know. However, it has introduced me and my family to a lot of new cuisine. My first experiments were with nikuman, the char siu being a huge hit. It went on to onigiri, with some encouragement from my then six year old daughter, and she fell in love.
Two years ago I decided to start packing her lunches on a regular basis, and found that I was not a fan of sandwiches every day (not to mention the junk food they try to pass off as healthy to accompany it). She needed more variety, and school lunches just weren't cutting it (especially for the cost).
So I have been doing bentos for her since. She just turned ten now, starting fourth grade, and loves having a good lunch packed in a cute box. I can also know exactly what she is eating and know that it is fresh and healthy. I love bentos!

I discovered bento boxes by accident! I don't even recall exactly how it happened ... hmm.

I was probably browsing the internet for japanese food ideas and stumbled upon bento --- I am prone to random and sporadic obsession and this is exactly what happened here :)

my husband was posted to Kobe in 2003 for a year-long work assignment. i fell in love with Japanese food & culture when i visited him - sadly i couldn't take a year off from my work to join him :( ... and i love the most amazingly fresh, great-tasting and beautiful bentos that i could get even in the local supermarket, or home-made ones that were sold from makeshift tables each lunch time!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I found out about bento because of japanese drama. XD I saw a girl eating bento, and I thought, "That looks really yummy! I want to do that too!"I am very interested in Japanese culture and I LOVE LOVE LOVE to cook. I started making my own bentos when I was in 5th grade, now almost half a decade later, I make bentos everyday for school and I make it for my parents. I also make it for my 17 month-old-sister in daycare. Making bento makes me happy and I love being able to have my family eat healthy, and save $50 - $100 a week!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I've always had packed lunches when I was growing up but have never really made any attempts to make my own "designed" boxes until recently.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I was shopping for a new lunch container for the kids and saw the word Bento. I had no idea at the time what a Bento actually was or what it entailed. Googled - and found Just Bento. I've been reading the blog ever since. That was 2 years ago. At first it was just a very practical way of making lunch but now I am exploring the art form and loving it. Great offer. Thanks for all that you do in your blog.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I discovered Bento boxes after a mama on a forum community I belong to brought them up in discussion. I forgot all about them and then my SIL brought them up the other day in discussion about my son going in Kindergarden. Now I am on a mission. : )

How did I get into bento?

One day I ran into a Japanese girl I went to college with eating lunch at a sidewalk cafe. Her lunch looked delicious- dumplings and tempura and green salad! "It's the bento lunch special," she told me. It was love! Yum yum!

It was several years ago. I got a bento lunch from a local Japanese restaurant, and I was cuirous about them, so I looked them up on the internet. WOW!! I was so smitten with bento, I started making mini bento out of polymer clay! There is a restaurant in Houston and one in Los Angeles that have some of my minis displayed (maybe still!). Love love loooove bento!!!

I've lived in the Pacific Northwest for over twenty years, and it is pretty easy to find bento, both in Asian groceries and in restaurants. I can't remember the first time I had a bento box, but it was probably during a visit to Uwajimaya (Seattle *or* Beaverton).

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

Autumn's Concerto/Next Stop, Happiness! I recently started getting into Taiwanese dramas, mostly to help improve my Chinese, but of course got addicted. The main female character works as a bento girl, selling lunches on a university campus, and that's how I first discovered bentos and later Just Bento since I was searching for cute bento boxes online.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I just discovered bentos this morning due to a packed lunch post on unclutterer.com

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I discovered bentos accidentally, while looking for a new lunchbox for work. I found the "Laptop Lunch" box and there was a mention of bento-style lunches. My Laptop Lunch box is still used often, and my lunches are more often than not bento.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I think I first learned the name "bento" when I was researching for our trip to Japan.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I discovered bento through a grocery site. One of the ladies mentioned making bentos for her daughter's school lunches. I've been happily learning ever since!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

Honestly, I have no idea. I've been so obsessed with Japan for the past 3 years, that I can't pinpoint exactly when I first discovered bentos. If I had to give an answer though, I think it was from an anime? Or maybe a drama? Or a song? Anyways, you get what I mean. :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

A friend from Korea actually introduced me to bento. She started taking pictures of her children's lunch then I started looking into what the cute boxes were and discovered Just Bento. So far it's the most comprehensive site and so I jumped into the forums and am still learning. :)

Have much to learn and many recipes to try, but little by little, I'm finding my niche.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

i became aware of bentos when I was searching the web for healthy school lunch options. I fell in love with the idea from the very beginning.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I discovered bento boxes while in Japan on a group pilgrimage near Mount Fuji. There were about 100 of us, so arranged lunches came already prepared in sectioned off plastic boxes with see through tops. "How cool is THAT!" I said to my table, as I admired the nicely prepared lunch. "What a great way to take lunch to work." This was pre-internet days and so searching for a box was not easy, so I went to an Asian market to start questioning. i found something suitable but it was never perfect. With the internet, I was like an excited kid. BENTO - so desu! My search for "japanese boxed lunch" brought me to the wonderful site of JUSTBENTO, once it was created. Now, there are so many to choose from. My family and I have our favorites. And picnics have never been the same.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

Well, I'm not really sure when I first became aware of bento (or at least when I knew to call it that), but I have always admired the pretty little lunches I see anime characters eating. The first bento box I ever bought was a My Melody one I got into a bidding war on ebay for nearly a decade ago, and I confess I bought it for the My Melody more than the bento part. ;o) (My first name is Melody.) But I didn't use it for a couple of years, not really knowing how to adapt my western style lunches to fit in it. Until it occurred to me (duh!) to look for bento-specific recipes, just like the pretty little lunches I see anime characters eating! And now I'm hooked!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I started last year packing japanese style bentos using info from this website. I went on a picnic last summer and a friend brought a tiered tiffin of food. I thought it was wonderful and when trying to find a site for such a tiffin I found JustBento. I had no idea about bentos and have been googling ideas and experimenting ever since.
We have ups and downs but my daughter on the whole likes the bentos--and even though we are caucasian living in a heavily hispanic area (Miami), she still prefers the more traditional japanese bento food I find here. :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

My wonderful friend Stephanie introduced me to the world of bento. She makes some of the most colorful and flavorful lunches. I had traveled to Japan just the year before - I wish I had started this addiction before then! I would have had to buy another suitcase to bring everything home! (We do not have any Japanese stores nearby in the US Midwest - so I have to rely on Target and the internet.) :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I have been interested in bentos for quite some time and now with two kids to pack for I'm researching and getting started.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

A friend posted about them on a message board and I googled them to find out what she meant.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I think I first saw bento on a show about hawaii. But then, as busy homeschoolers, we bought the Laptop Lunch boxes a few years ago and the blessed internet introduced me to more.

That Addy set is too cute. My daughter is nicknamed Addie and we call her Addie Bug. May need that set!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I found out first about bentos because of Hana Yori Dango. Ya, a drama, haha. Dramas and movies have been teaching me about culture and language though after all. I realized just how cute they could be.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I discovered bentos in all the manga that I read, and I also eat at a lot of japanese restaurants that have table bentos

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I'm not entirely sure how I came across bentos because it's just kind of something I automatically knew. You're going to school? Don't forget your bento! But I guess I became very aware of how much I loved bentos when I was VERY young and saw the movie "My Neighbor Totoro". There is a part in the beginning of the movie, I think, where the eldest sister, Satsuki, must eat quickly to leave for school.

I fell in love with bentos that day because it just looked so cute and delicious! C:

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I have been watching your site for a while now, and I must say that I can't wait for your book! (We've already ordered it, and the rest of this household look forward to it as well - they love it when I make them bentos from this site) This is the first time I've entered a drawing contest online. I wish everyone luck!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I discovered bento thru this site!! I found this and lunchinabox.net and cookingcute all in the same search. I was looking for a recipe but I don't remember what for anymore. I've been hooked on bento, AND this site, ever since! :D

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I stumbled across them looking for Thomas the Train lunchboxes on eBay for my son, and I thought they were awesome, so I started researching them and naturally came across this site. I can't wait to get my first box and start packing!!
