I became aware of Bentos from my husband. His mother is Japanese and grew up in Kobe. I only knew the woman for a few years. She saw the birth of our 4yr old daughter then soon passed away. I want to keep some of her traditions still alive since our daughter won't get the privilege of ever having known her grandmother.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I just got into the concept of bento recently. i got the idea from a Miyazaki anime movie i was watching. i saw the beautifully wrapped and portioned food and was thinking, "hey, why not try that?" i Googled 'Japanese lunch wrapping' and came up with furoshiki, an inventive art that i could use with bandannas i had lying about the house. but what i really wanted to know was what they wrapped up in furoshiki. that's how i ran across your website and Bento art. honestly, it was your website recipes that sold me. i thought it was all about shaping rice and seaweed cutouts, but i realized that i could put whatever i could think of in them. So now i pack lunch for both my mother and i.
i am an avid cook and artist and love to present my food in an attractive way. this is a great outlet for me to show off my culinary and artistic skills to my school friends and to give my mother to brag about how her lunch looks cooler!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I found out about Bento on accident. One day I came up with the BRILLIANT idea to start packing lunches with lots of little containers and side dishes in one big plastic box, and I thought I was really on to something! When I started looking for recipes for "small lunch recipes", I found out about Bento and realized that someone else was already doing it. And had been for like, thousands of years. Ha!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I bought an Ultra Man bento box for my now husband. That might have actually been my introduction to bento boxes. I'm still learning, and will learn a lot more when we have our first child!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I wanted to start making my own bento box and was looking online. Your site was one of the first ones and I subscribed to your site.
Your site is cool!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I like to cook and watch a lot Japanese cartoons. Some will have a very quick shot of onigiri or someother stuff. Also I bring my lunch to work everyday, then why not make a pretty bento since I am already packing lunch? That's how I am reading a lot bento blogs online and learn to pack my own bento.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I found Bento when I was looking for a way to portion my lunches. The playfulness caught my eye. I've been Bento-ing for 3 years now!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

Maki - My daughter and I discovered bentos unintentionally really. It started with the purchase of a small Hello Kitty one. The HK was the draw for her and the ease of packing her preschool snack for me. Now as she strives to learn about her heritage (part Japanese) we have come to LOVE bentos. And thus have become avid readers of Just Bento and Just Hungry. Thanks for these wonderful blogs.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

How did I discover bentos...? I knew bentos existed from reading manga and watching anime & Asian dramas. But I think I stumbled upon the idea of making my own when browsing flickr pictures for cute food. And the rest is history!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

A friend of mine introduced me to bentos when she was working on portion control. She even recommended some awesome websites and gave me a few fun bento accessories! I haven't packed a bento lunch in awhile and I'm highly considering getting another bento box so I can get back to bento. Now there's another gal at work who brings her cute bento lunchbox around so I wouldn't be the only one.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

My hubby and I have been using the Bento box concept as a means of weight loss. It is working great. We just moved from snap-lock containers to more traditional boxes... wanted to make sure we would keep going.

Thanks for the site it is GREAT.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I found out about Bentos from an online webcomic - RealLife. It's a great comic that features a lot of nerdy topics, but one storyline actually featured bentos. Here's the link to the start of the storyline: http://www.reallifecomics.com/archive/090202.html

I didn't get started for a couple of months later, but it definitely got me interested in creating bentos.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

This spring, one of my coworkers mentioned hearing about justbento.com and I immediately hunted down the site. Being a fan of Japanese food & culture, and needing to diet, I really appreciated the recipes & advice found on this site. Since then, I've been making bento lunches for myself, my wife and my kids on a regular basis. My oldest daughter starts all day Kindergarten this fall. Seeing she is already one of the biggest fans of my bento lunches, I hope she'll be happy bringing them to school as well.

Thanks for the wonderful site! I look forward to picking up your book when it is released.

I discovered Bento's on your blog! I have been reading for about 18 months. I am so sorry about your recent hospital stint.

Good luck on your recovery!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I guess this is pretty common, but I discovered bento when watching Japanese cartoons and thinking that the food the kids always brought to school looked really good (In retrospect, I'm really not sure how, as I still can't identify half the foods in cartoons). One google search for "japanese lunch boxes" later, and I stumbled on something that would fit my lifestyle perfectly, just in time too, as I was starting a new job and would have to start packing a lunch. I only regret that I didn't discover bento back in high school or college-- I'm sure my friends would have been all over it with me.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I found bentos while searching a foodie website, and stumbled upon Happy Little Bento's blog. Through her blog I found the whole world of bentos and was seriously hooked. I like to put a seasonal spin on bentos and try to incorporate local, fresh foods. Thanks for this fun contest!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I've been following Just Bento - no idea how I chanced on the blog, just can't look away! - for about a year and a half. With back-to-school three weeks away I'm thinking about trying some on my kids! Love your blog and I would love to win a bento.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I discovered bentos in Japanese class back in high school. Today I sent my daughter with a bento for her first day of Kindergarten. <3

I became aware of bento boxes when I met my bestie who has a love for all things Japanese. She bought me my first bento box (Hello Kitty) when she visited Japan two years ago and I've been hooked since! They make homemade lunches a much more fun experience.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I discovered bento through an artist friend who also got me interested in awesome little foods that can be put in bento!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I discovered restaurant-sized bentos when I moved from my hick-town childhood into a big-city adulthood. I went crazy for the little compartmentalized bits of everything. One day a couple of years ago, I decided I wanted some of those restaurant bento trays, and started Googling. I ran across your site and found out about take-along bentos, and fell in love all over again! For a while I worried that this was adultery--I no longer live in a city with Japanese restaurants, so can't get those bentos anymore--but now I feel that I'm just having an open relationship with obento!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I found about bento while browsing through Flickr. First, I couldn't believe how people can make so cute stuff out of food. And, eat it too. Seriously, how can people eat all those cutesy stuff?? :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I began learning Japanese about 7 months ago to prepare for the possibility of having a job in Japan. As a result, I eventually purchased a few cookbooks written in Japanese to help me learn (I mean, hey, if it tastes good and doesn't kill me, I must be doing something right!) Because of my exploratory cooking, my I began receiving various bento cookbooks and supplies from friends, and now I spend my Sundays attempting to make a variety of bento foods that are as aesthetically pleasing as possible! Best wishes on a speedy recovery and thank you for your blogs! I've been following for a while and have already tried the Tsubu-an from Just Hungry with great results!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I can't quite remember how I discovered bentos, but once I did I was hooked on how they were designed and arranged. Either I saw a picture on the Internet or I ordered one at a restaurant,
But I really enjoy their aesthetics, kyraben or not.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I grew up in Hawaii where bento lunches are readily available. One of my best friends' family owned a bento lunch shop that I frequented as a young adult. After I moved to the mainland and became pregnant with my son, I started craving all the types of foods I used to eat growing up. So I searched online for bento recipes. I now make bento-style lunches for my son to take to school. The cute food helps him discover and try new healthy foods.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

My daughters and I discovered Bento about a year ago when they were attending an anime convention. We have slowly been trying out a few recipes here and there. We just copied down your directions for freezing rice for my eldest who is headed back to college and wants to "bento" her lunch. I am hoping to substitute bento a couple of times per week to help control lunch portions served by our excellent but "supersized" portions in our school cafeteria.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I became interested in the Japanese language and culture in high school and found a Mitsuwa marketplace that stocked bento boxes. So I bought one!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I more or less stumbled into bentos, quite by accident. I do love anime and video games, which introduced me to pop-culture that came out of Japan into America, but my real love is cooking. I love to cook all kinds of cuisines and I had started cooking Chinese and Thai foods. Naturally, I started to experiment with Japanese and learned about the bento. It was so neatly compact and easy, with so much flavor, that I instantly fell in love. That and I have found that I love Japanese cuisine most of all... To the point that it is what I prepare most days of the week (much to the bemusement of my Southern American family).

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

As a child I went to a Japanese Bilingual Bicultural Elementary school and would drool over the beautiful bentos the children of Japanese nationals would bring to school. In the process of getting things ready for my daughter to go to kindergarten, I decided we would try and pack lunches for her and started revisiting bentos. I am so thankful for your site and others like yours.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

Actually I was introduced to Bentos via JustBento. As I am interested in cooking and subscribe to plenty of cooking blogs, Google Reader randomly introduced me to this website (JustBento), and I've been hooked ever since!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I learned about bentos from a good friend of mine from Japan. Her family lived in the US for a couple of years while she was growing up and, along with bentos, introduced me to onigiri, for which I will be forever grateful.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

omg that's so cute!

i first discovered bentos while watching japanese dramas and thought they were the coolest things ever (especially the ones made to look like cartoon characters). too bad my parents never packed cool lunches for me and i had to make do with the school lunch. i'm not much of a cooker but the beautiful aesthetics of the box itself is what really draws me in. they're just sooo cute.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I first discovered bento online when I was looking for different ways to present veggies, eggs, rice, etc to my preschooler. And then I fell in love with the egg molds and rice molds :)
I love that it makes every meal special.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I discovered bento because my son studies Japanese in school and he came home asking if we could try to make onigiri. Some googling later and we were trying out bentos.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I first discovered Bento from a Japanese friend and would like to start making some delicious lunches.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

A friend online bento-boxes and i've become interested.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

To be honest, I "discovered" bentos watching Sailor Moon in Japanese with a friend in middle school. I remember thinking that Makoto's lunchbox looked awesome. As I got more into the Japanese language, and started watching JDramas, it became obvious that this was something that every Japanese person knew about. My mom had always packed me lunches, and while they weren't anything out of the ordinary (sandwiches and salads mostly), she did spend the extra effort in making it varied and interesting. So, when last year my food budget was cut in half, I remembered bentos. Dinner was mostly pasta and a salad, so I knew that lunch needed to have lots of different things in small quantities to make up for the loss of nutrients. At first I just used a glass tupperware set, like you'd use to store leftovers. Now, my mini-journey of obentou has me alternating between two obentou boxes, portable chopsticks, and silicone holding cups. =D

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I discovered bento about two summers ago. I was just getting back into watching anime and learning to cook after stopping my college meal plan to save money. I was looking for a way to pack my lunches to take to campus and I happened to come across a bento blog. So this became a way for me to not only learn how to cook but be creative with it too. I especially love looking at kyaraben blogs.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I grew up with a Best friend who was Japanese. Her mom would send her to school with rice balls, and when I'd tag along to the Japanese grocery store with her and her mother- I discovered pre-packaged bentos at the deli. YUM!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I readily blame Sailor Moon, years ago, for introducing me to bento. I love the style and proportion and the effort that goes into a beautifully balanced bento. It looks like some others agree with me & my experience! I, too, loved Makoto's bento in Sailor Moon. I started looking them up ever since!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I discovered Bento when I lived in Japan for a short period 10 years ago. At that time, I found the idea of a complete meal in a box neatly packed and presented a very beautiful art of food presentation and a thoughtful one especially to the receiver of the Bento. Coupled with all the beautiful and pretty Bento tools available, the Japanese people have taken the plain lunch box to another level which pleases all who makes it , receives it and also a passerby and onlooker!

Making each and every Bento for my kids now gives me comfort and assurance that only good ingredients are fed to them and I look forward to new ideas everytime. And of course having a cute box helps in everyways :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I know I first saw bento boxes on anime, but I can't remember what show it was! Ah My Goddess? Fruit Basket? anyway, some cute girl was bringing lunch to school for the boy she had a crush on, and I was fixated on the food. "How did she DO that??" and eventually, i found out how.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I can't quite remember how I first heard about bentos. I'm pretty sure that I followed links from another food-related site or article and came to your site. It came at the right time -- when I was wanting to save money by packing lunches more often and when I wanted something a little more creative for lunch. Thanks! I enjoy your site and get it fed to my Yahoo page.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I'm not sure how I came to know what bentos were. I would see them around in flea markets but never took the time to find out about them until my friend pointed them out to me and gave my an introduction to them. I learned a lot.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway and Special Offer from ...

I found this site through a google search... love it! Thanks for all the helpful info!
