Pasta Salad with Potential (vegan/vegetarian/omnivorous)

Last night, on a whim, I decided that we needed a taste of spring at the Basil household. So, I got my partner to help and we whipped up three kinds of pasta salad for bento this week and some for the freezer, too. Besides all that, it only took about 20 minutes, from start to stop. It's a great (and cheap!) bento box filler, but pasta salad is a "by feel" food for me, so I'm kinda guessing on amounts. I'd hate to post a recipe only to find out that no one liked it because I didn't bother to measure ingredients or figure out calorie counts! continue reading...

Bento bargain found (UK)

There is a 99p store right next to my chiropractor's office, so I pop in every other week. Today I scored a set of 6 silicone cups as well as a set of 10 mini cups. They had them in orange, pink and blue and only 99p per set!

Compared to what I have seen them priced at elsewhere, it seemed like a good deal so I thought I'd share for the UK members. :)

Week 4 - Picky Eater Foods

This week’s challenge theme is bentos for other people. One thing that can be very difficult to deal with is if the bento recipient is a picky eater. Especially if the picky eater is YOU!

If you have to deal with picky eaters (including you), what bento-friendly foods can you think of that might, or do, get eaten by those pain in the… I mean, choosy people?

How do I know what Fruits and Veggies are in season?

Hello!

How do I know what Fruits and Veggies are in season?

I know some obvious stuff like apples and squash in fall, and watermelon in summer. But there are lots of produce that I'm not sure.... People say look at the prices, but I haven't been shopping for myself much - and when I wanted strawberries in the dead of winter - I'd buy them. Now I want to be a financially sound consumer...

P.S. I live in the Northern Hemisphere - PA - USA....

How long does it take you to eat your bento?

Hello!

I was wondering how long it takes everyone to actually eat their bentos?

I'm excited about trying bentos, but I'm afraid I wont have time to enjoy all my hard work. Right now I take about a 10-15 minute lunch, but I'm only eating a granola bar.

Thanks for your input. :)

Green Lentil & Carrot Salad with Mustard Vinaigrette

If you like lentils this is a very good salad for a bento:

1 cup lentilles du Puy (French green lentils) picked over and rinsed
6 cups water
1 onion, chopped (not too fine; you will discard it)
3 bacon slices, chopped (this can be omitted for a vegetarian version)
1 garlic clove, halved
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 cup fresh parsely leaves, chopped fine. Save the stems for cooking the lentils
2 carrots, diced fine (about 3/4 cup)

For vinaigrette
2 teaspoons white-wine vinegar
1 1/2 tablespoons Dijon mustard, or to taste (I do this to taste - that's a lot of Dijon!) continue reading...

Challenge Week 4 Talk

The Week 4 Challenge details are up! This week's focus is Bentos for Others. This may not apply to you if you are just making bentos for yourself, so feel free (as always) to focus on your own goals this week!

Week 4 officially starts on Monday, Feb. 2.

Also, if you have any tips and ideas for bentos for your kids, spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend, brother, sister, parent, etc...please share!

I'm looking for a certain bento blog...

I think it hasn't been nominated yet in the nomination thread, but it's a bento blog (or...food blog with bentos), where the blog author/mom puts little Post-It notes in her child's bentos, with cute messages on them.

I think the author is in Australia, but not 100% sure. I can't find it anymore and obviously I forgot to bookmark it or subscribe to it!

Does this ring a bell for anyone?
