Miso Mustard Greens

This was an impromptu attempt to use up some turnip greens. I guess it is a kind of ohitashi.

1 small bunch turnip or other greens
Boil until done to your liking, drain and chop

2 tbsp white miso
1 tbsp mustard powder
about 1 tbsp mirin or cooking water, to smooth the sauce
mix this together until smooth and mix in with the chopped greens

This much mustard powder makes it very hot. You could cut back.

Girl's day coming up soon..

Is anyone else looking forward to celebrating girl's day? I can't wait to make Hamaguri-zushi (the little egg-wrapped sushi) and the temari zushi (sushi rice balls wrapped in Salmon). I found Maki's write-up about these to be so appealing. I think I'll make two girl's day bentos and find a girl-friend to share with :-)

That's what my first bento looks like. It's smaller than I expected so I'm not sure I can fit the stuff in that I wanted to cook. Any advice on organizing or things that specifically fit in here? I'm not quite sure what to do. It is smaller than I'd expected but it's my first bento purchase so I'm not sure whether I'm underestimating how much I could put into it.

27th February Wrapup for Late Starters and Follow-ups

I'm posting this a little early this week, I'm about to hop into my car and drive to Christchurch (four hours away) for a weekend of motorcycle racing. No, I'm not racing, I'm "pit crew" aka "having a good time".

I hope everyone is still keeping up the good work. continue reading...

what to do...

So Not too long ago, I bought some mixed frozen japanese veggies at the asian grocery store. The bag consists of mainly Lotus Root, SHiitake, Taro, and Gobo. The problem is...I have no idea what to do with them...I made a stirfry once but it didn't work out so well....I don't really care for frozen vegetables really, I usually only buy fresh lol I'm not really sure why i bought these...bleh but now i have to use them up haha...any ideas?

My two favourite simmered dishes.

What are your favourite recipes for simmered pumpkin; kabocha no fukumeni and simmered daikon radish; furofuki-daikon. They are inexpensive and can be kept in the fridge for several days.
