Food and Drink

The BBC have put up a report on Bento in Japan :) Some of the designs are epic!

Kakigori - Japanese shaved ice

Kakigori is one of those Japanese foods that just never appealed to me. I've been visiting Japan for a decade and have successfully managed to avoid going in the summer time, so kakigori was never a must try on my trips and, anyway, I never liked Slush Puppies and I'd assumed that kakigori would be similar to these. Wrong! It's more like eating a fruit sorbet. continue reading...

cooking brown rice and adzuki beans in a rice cooker

Has anyone tried to cook brown rice and adzuki beans together in a rice cooker? I think they have a similar cooking time, although maybe it would be necessary to presoak the beans... I have already successfully cooked brown rice and lentils together in my rice cooker, using the brown rice setting and adding just a little bit more water than I would have for just brown rice. This is a very easy vegetarian (and vegan) one pot meal, and you can add whatever seasonings you want to the water to vary the flavor. continue reading...

Quinoa Makizushi - an idea from Heston Blumenthal

My mother brought me a book to look at recently. It's called Heston Blumenthal at home. Amongst the recipes was a technique which I think would be of interest to the Just Bento community. I wish I could say that I could have come up with it myself but there is a step which makes quinoa suitable for spreading and rolling in nori I would never have ever considered trying. I won't go into too much detail as I have no wish to infringe his creative copyright but the basic principle is easy to share.

To begin with, his tips for preparing quinoa: continue reading...

A stainless steel, man-sized bento box?

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for a stainless steel bento box suitable for an adult male. I'm athletic and I probably consume my major meal around lunch time so it should be on the larger size (I tend to eat sparsely at breakfast and dinner).

Non-leaking is important, it will be in a bag with my laptop! continue reading...

Cooking for Chemo Patients

I know some of our members have experience cooking for chemotherapy patients. What kind of food oddities have you encountered? A mentor of mine completely lost her sense of taste while on radiation therapy for cancer. continue reading...

Lunch boxes in Germany

I'm cruising (literally) through Germany in a few weeks and would like to see what German bento chefs are using as bento boxes. I've got Japanese bento boxes, and Lock and Locks, and Wonder Bread sandwich boxes, but I am curious if German enthusiasts use something every day like Tupperware that I could pick up for my collection. I won't be in any major cities long enough to go shopping, but I will have free time in some smaller towns along the Rhine River.

ricecooker onigiri

I just purchased a ricecooker so I can make my onigiri fresh in the morning, instead of making a whole batch and freezing them. Now I'm wondering whether or not I have to wrap them in clingfilm while still hot when I make them fresh or not. Or if I can just put them warm in a box (with just the onigiri, nothing else in it).
Can anyone help me out? Thanks!
