The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

JUST-BENTO_bookcover.jpg

The giveaway is now closed. The winners will be contacted and announced later this week. Thank you everyone for entering!

To commemorate the new edition of The Just Bento Cookbook, I’m going to give away 2 signed copies! The new edition has the exact same content as the previous edition, but just has a slightly different form factor (a wee bit smaller (but not much), and no dust jacket (but the cover is printed in full color)). I am very glad it has been reprinted again; as I mentioned before, the original publisher closed its doors in March, but the publishing rights were picked up by another division of the same parent company, Kodansha USA. So anyway, here’s your chance to get your hands on one! It’s too late to get the book to the winners before the holidays, but it should arrive in the New Year when you’re all ready to tackle those healthy/frugal eating resolutions.

All you have to do is leave a comment to this post (not an email reply if you are reading this by email: click on the title to come to site, and post your comment entry here!) Be sure to put your email address in the appropriate box (it will be hidden from prying spammers, not to worry) so that I can contact you if you win. In the body of your comment, state the following:

  • where you are located in the world (everyone is eligible, as long as you live somewhere where mail can reach you)
  • your gender, profession and general age bracket (you can be vague about the age ^_^ I’m just a curious bunny about who my readers are)
  • who you make bentos for primarily - or plan to make bentos for if you havent’ started
  • (optional) What you want to see on JustBento. A specific recipe? A how-to? I’m all ears!

Only one entry/comment per person please! The deadline for posting your comment is 23:59:59 of Monday, December 19th CET (Central European Time). Two winners will be chosen at random, and I’ll contact them next week and announce them as soon as they’ve responded.

So…I look forward to seeing your comments! Good luck!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

(cross fingers)

I'm located in Indiana, in the midwestern united states out in a rural district

I'm female, disabled but have worked in clerical and editing positions (I worked for Sat. Eve post for a couple years until the crazy there drove me awaaaaay!!!!) and I'm in my 40's

I make bento's mainly for myself and my mom. I started making them in part for portion control and healthier eating for me, and in the summer we tend to go out and wander around the countryside and I didn't like driving into town and getting lunch at some fast food so started making them for our trips. She's in her 80's and kind of set in her ways, so I had to start out very american and sneak in more and more authentic stuff :D but I am nothing if not her "devious yet dutiful daughter"! (yes, she says this of me!)

I've actually had people in parks stop and ask me about the bentos, a few have even suggested I might be able to start up a little business for myself making them for local school children if parents are worried about the crap the school serves. If I lived in a more urban area they are right, I could probably do that if I could slip under the table with it and not have to set myself up as a restaurant (which legally, I would, which would make the whole thing un-doable sadly.) Mom suggested maybe letting the weekenders here (I live in an area on a lake where there are a lot of small cabins, many of them are only occupied on summer weekends by people getting out of the city) know I could make really awesome picnic lunches...might try that.

On here, I would love to see more of ideas for pre-made ahead, lasts a couple days, can be morphed into various forms type stuff, and ideas for substitutes for traditional Japanese stuff that's hard to find ( found that the "broccoli slaw" which my local walmart sells makes good kinpira!) but, really more than anything, I'd like to see more of a happy, healthy, Maki :D Hope you are feeling better and have a good holiday!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi! I live in a port town in eastern Hokkaido and am a 23 year old Assistant Language Teacher of English in three Japanese high schools. My boyfriend and I teach at separate high schools (he actually teaches at 12 different schools in the area) and I make bentos for both of us. I'm slowly branching out in my bento making skills but he still prefers pb&js...so I try to be creative with side dishes /(`-`)/ I'd love to get your book to get more ideas!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Ooh, a give-away!

I live in a small town called Litchfield Park, on the outskirts of Phoenix, Arizona. I am female, 23 and
currently I am about to take my Corrections Officer entrance exams, I'm hoping to be a parole officer ^_^.

I make bentos for my fiance and myself. Mostly I do it to improve my cooking skills... but the added benefit of being cheaper than eating out is great too.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm a 30-year-old writer in San Diego, California. I make bentos for myself, but as a new mom, I'm looking forward to making them for my son when he gets older.

As far as what I'd like to see on the site in the future goes, really, anything is fine, as long as you don't push yourself too hard. I've loved Just Bento from the start, so keep up the great work!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

My name is Ceska. I'm from Georgia in the USA. I work in a microbiology lab. I make bento lunches for my boyfriend and I. We are training for Ironman and cannot afford to eat crappy food with all of the training that we are doing. Thank you for all the great ideas for bentos!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I live Utah, USA
I'm a female student getting closer to twenty, and I make bentos mostly for myself.
I love seeing Japanese recipes that don't require any special, hard to find ingredients!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm a 20 year old, female college student from Southern California and love following your blog and admiring all the bentos! I have yet to make any, mostly due to lack of motivation, but I've been constantly worrying about maintaing a proper diet, especially when there's so much fried and fatty foods near the dorms. :P Hopefully this will make me more motivated to get started! I would make them for me and the boyfriend - it'd be a perfect cheaper/healthier meal for weekend adventures! :)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi!

I'm from the Chicago suburbs in the United States.
I'm 22 and almost finished with my undergraduate degree. (Yay!)
I try and make a bento of some variety for myself everyday, but sometimes I make enough to share with my roommates.
I really like the website right now. My favorite recipes are the quick ones that don't take a lot of time or very many special ingredients since I am short on time and funds. ( :( Such is the life of a student....)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Yay contest!

I am located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
I am a homemaker in my 20s.
I like making bentos for my partner to take to work. I also like making them for myself when I go on quilting retreats, or if me and my partner go on an outing for the day. I find it makes the adventure more fun when your food is pretty (and you don't have to worry about whether or not you can eat some of the ingredients - we're both vegan)
What I want to see on JustBento? I think you have a wonderful layout and format; I couldn't be happier with this site :)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm a teenage girl in California! Right now, my only job is school. I usually make bentos for myself and my mom since she doesn't really like to cook, but that's okay since I do! <3
Umm...I'm hoping to see a lot more recipes for beverages. I love how your website is now so I'm just waiting for any kind of updates. :D Thanks for posting!
love,
shao

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi Maki, I'm Emily, and I live in a very small town in Minnesota in the United States! I am a 14 year old young woman (I think 14 is a little too old to be called a girl..haha!) and I love, love, love bento! Unfortunately, there are no, and I repeat NO Asian markets or anything of the sort. I have gleaned some bento materials from local supermarkets and the internet and some very pricey essentials from Whole Foods. I've been making bento mainly for my lunches for the last two months-- my classmates thought it was odd at first, but now they want me to make bento for them!

I would love to see simple recipes that are both healthy and attractive, with very common ingredients! I love the blog, by the way, so many good ideas!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm 25, female, from the Midwest--I work as a freelance editor.

I fell out of making bentos after I started working from home, but I'm wanting to get my sisters into it, since they're both studying Japanese and have fallen in love with the food.

There's nothing specific I haven't been able to find on the site, but I love seeing new ways of using leftovers.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I am a 30 year old lady from Camden, NC who has only just gotten into the art of bento. I work in the library of our local college, College of the Albemarle. I have mostly been making bentos for myself and my husband. It is incredibly fun and I love the creativity and thoughtfulness required to make them just right. Thanks for having such a wonderfully useful and entertaining site. ^_^

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

OMG I've ALWAYS wanted to have a bento how-to book but I never got around to actually buying one!!!
I'm from Michigan, the mitten state :)
I'm a female, and a student in high school (my senior year, wahoo go SENIORS!!!)
If I do end up getting this book then I guess I would make it for my family, myself, and friends.
I guess it would be more of a invention thought, but I would hope that someday someone could create a bento where you could put in ice cream, jello, pudding, etc. and have it stay at a cool temperature. So I guess like a bento you could freeze the day before and it'll stay frozen for a good amount of time?

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I love making bento style lunches to take with me to work. While other people eat their frozen meals or go out to eat, I feel good about eating something fresh and healthy that I made myself.

I'm pretty new to this whole bento thing and I would love the book to help me make more exciting bento lunches that my co-workers will be envious over.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Greetings to you and your family. I hope this finds you in fine health.

I am a 52-year-old female living in Vancouver, WA. Although my profession is at-home transcription, I live in an elder community and have folks in my neighborhood who are no longer able to cook meals for themselves. I regularly make meals at home and then deliver them for dinner to folks in the community who need a home-cooked meal. This week I made miso/tofu/veggie soup and it was a hit! I think the folks here would be open to trying bento, and your book would be a great way for me to branch out and expand their palates.

Imagine if you were homebound and unable to cook for yourself -- receiving a bento delivery would no doubt bring smiles abound to these folks!

Lastly, I would love to try some meatless versions of bento -- perhaps substituting edamame or tofu for those dishes that call for meat, pork, turkey, lamb, or chicken.

All the best to you and your family,

Patty

Greetings from Canada's Capital

I am in my 40s a disabled single mom and human rights activist

I hope to learn to make bentos for cost savings and health benefits for myself and hopefully my children

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm a 50 y/o woman, who lives in Connecticut and works as an assistant manager in a bookstore. I'm just starting to make bentos for myself. Next semester I hope to send bentos with my son as he returns to classes at a local community college.

I am a 30-something woman living in Edmonton, Canada, and work as a project coordinator.
I make bentos for myself, and love having something special to enjoy at my desk, in a park during the summer, or even in lunch meetings.
Thanks for all the inspiration to make my lunches more nutritious and fun!!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm a 34 year old woman currently in Idaho. I make bentos for my son, and I love new make ahead recipes. I'm a full time mama, and part time consultant.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm writing from Southern California! Thank you for offering this giveaway!!
I make bentos for me, a female/mid-40s educator/designer/artist. I sometimes have to eat two meals away from home in a day, and, honestly, there's only so many peanutbutter and jelly sandwiches I can eat, and don't want to have to rely on what the cafeteria at school might have that day. I'm of Japanese (Okinawan) ancestry, so a lot of your recipes are serious, serious comfort food to me. I was in heaven after making up a batch of the basic meat soboro! I get so much inspiration from the recipes, and love to savor all your posts. Thanks again for the website, Maki!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi! I'm a 30-year old college instructor from Hawaiʻi. I love making bentos for myself and for my husband... but mostly for myself! ;) I would love to see more egg and tofu dishes because they're my favorite, and I loved the recipes I've tried from your site so far!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hello Ms. Maki, I'm a 30 y/o graduate student/ home economics teacher from the Philippines.

I've used bento in class to encourage students to pack healthy lunches for themselves and their younger siblings. My roomie doesn't eat veggies unless I sneak them into her bento lunch. And now I am exploring ways to get my 3 y/o nephew to eat healthful meals regularly by preparing bento.

I would love to see a post saying you'll visit the Philippines and do a bento-making demo for time-pressed office workers and working moms :-)

Love and light!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Elo! I am a 30 year old woman in North Carolina, and I am a librarian by trade :). I found your site a couple years ago when researching for a teen library event when I was in California. It's a fresh start for me out here in NC and I'm looking forward to making bentos for myself ^_^ My favorite articles are how tos and time saving tricks like freezing pre-portioned rice. I hope your health continues to improve and you are fully recovered soon :) Thank you for the giveaway!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

California/U.S.; female, tech publishing, mid/late 30s; I make bentos for myself because I hate packing a lunch and I hate wasting plastic bags, but your site made things fun and easy.

I'd love to see stuff for bentos that use small thermal containers, because I bought this and don't know what would be good to put in it, so I've never used it! (Soup wouldn't be enough food in something this small.)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I love to win this giveaway as I will have a chance to prepare for my 2 1/2 year boy, who is a fussy eater to school as the school do not provide lunch for him.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi!
-I'm from Québec, Canada.
-I'm 15-16years old and I don't have(yet!)a job.
-I plan to make bentos for myself, to eat healthier, and for my mom. She would also like to eat healthier and I think it's great she wants to try making them with me! ^^
Your site is awesome, I really like the recipes you post here! :)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi, I'm Ethan from Perth, Australia. I'm a male in my late 20s and I work as a website coordinator, plus photographer on the side. As I've been eating out everyday, I feel the need to make my own bentos to bring to work to save money and also to eat healthily. This book will definitely help me to accomplish that!
Great site by the way, keep it up! :)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Located: Vancouver, British Columbia
Male, 24, student
Make them primarily for myself so I've got things to eat throughout the day that are actually filling.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hello, I'm Matt and I am 13 and currently living in Australia! I love reading your blog and planning to make some for my lunch. I am really concerned on the food I eat and my asian traditional food is just great. I always get a bad feeling when I have something plain (sandwich=boring, pastie=boring) but this book looks really outstanding from the sneak-throughs which can make my creativity go wild.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi, I'm a 40-year old woman who lives in Bangalore, India and I discovered your website about a month ago--while searching for healthy eating options! I work as technical writer in the software industry. Your website is an inspiration, I find it's really helping me to eat healthy, a BIG thank you for that! I make bentos to carry to work for lunch and am hoping to get my husband to take them to work as well. I don't really have any suggestions, except that sometimes I need to figure out substitutes for some ingredients in the recipes since not everything is available here. I'm a big fan!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi Maki,

I'm a 21 year old female university student located in Canada and I usually make bentos for my boyfriend and I. He's trying to lose weight and his pathetic lunches didn't help, and since we were both exchange students in Japan when we got together, I was pretty influenced into the 'bento' culture from our time in Japan (plus I can put some 愛情 into it, haha). Thanks to your ideas, he's lost around 5lbs in the past month :) I really enjoy reading your how-to pages (regular wiping of drool off my keyboard included) and would love to see more pages on certain ingredients? For example, just a page on how we could use an ingredient like 'eggs' to make several different dishes.

Thanks!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

On a side note, I actually saw your book in the English section in a bookstore in the BAL building of Kyoto, but I couldn't afford it at the time, haha... Cheers!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

hi,
I'm 32, from Israel, I'm a student and use bentos to have some fun on my long days at uni :) I find that making the effort means I take my time when I eat too :).

Hello!
My name is Ayala, 28, I am from Jerusalem, Israel.
I am a student in an Art academy studying Ceramics. I took a year off school and went to Japan for about a year and realized the true meaning of Bentos! Now that I am back home I make myself a Bento for school every day, wrap it in firoshiki and put "my-hashi" in it too.

I am still so overwhelmed with the recipes you have posted I can't think of anything right now (I find myself spending hours in this website and Just hungry!)

you are a true TAKARAMONO... I wish you all the best! and good-good health!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hello!
I have just stumbled upon your food blog from www.taste.com.au forums.
I live in Melbourne, Australia and work in the Chemistry field.
I'm female, and just shy of 30. I fell in love with Japan about 15 years ago, and have now visited Japan 3 times! The most recent visit was earlier this year with my fiancé.
I haven't yet made a bento. I did request a bento 'box' for Christmas, love the idea of it, but it just seems complicated and a little time consuming at the moment. Maybe if I read this blog some more (or win a copy of the book) I can see how easy it really is and then make lunches for both myself and the fiancé. Bringing lunch to work is more thrifty when trying to save for a wedding or buying our first home.

I'm a teacher from Singapore. 30+ female.
I make bentos for myself and a very good friend in school who is like a sister to me. I found your site when researching for onigiri ideas several years ago. ^-^

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Yay, Awesome!

I'm living in Highland Park, New Jersey, USA.

I'm 23 years old, female, and working as an actor at George Street Playhouse, bringing theatre to young audiences around NJ and NY.

I make bentos for myself. We're out on the road a lot, and it's nice when lunch time comes around I can open up a tasty, healthy and attractive treat for lunch on a low budget--I may be a poor artist, but I refuse to be a starving one!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Man, I've been meaning to buy this since LAST time, but I never seem to have the spare cash. >.>

USA, Female, stage technician and journalist, late 20's. I make my bentos primarily for myself, but sometimes my husband asks for one - I tend toward cooking predominantly Asian food because I find it tastes better/is easier for me to prepare, and he does have a fondness for it.

Annnd...more quick-pickle recipes would be rad! I'm a ridiculous-huge fan of the radish pickles, and in the 'States you don't find a whole lot of pickles other than your standard cucumber brine pickles (which are tasty, just not what I'm looking for).

Man, it's 6 in the morning, and I haven't slept yet (the downside of being a stagehand is a screwed-up sleep schedule), but suddenly I desperately want some soy sauce eggs (the downside of reading bento sites at 6 a.m. on an empty stomach).

(I have this horrible feeling that I'm Doing This Wrong somehow, but these newfangled CMS's never seem to want to accept my comment.)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm a 29 year old homemaker currently living in South Korea. We're a US Air Force family who were stationed in Japan for the last four years. I started making obentos when my daughter began attending a Japanese Kindergarten and we're trying to keep it up!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi Makiko,
I'm in Canada, a woman graphic designer in my mid 30's. I make bentos for myself. I love seeing the finished bentos with links to the recipes, so I would like to see more. It really inspires me!

I made your celery kinpira (olive oil + S&P) and I LOVED it!!! It was a side to roast beef and baked potato. Perfect and light vegetable for a hearty diner.

You have a great blog, I enjoy reading it, it's truly inspiring. Keep up the good work it is appreciated.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi Maki,
Thanks for this giveaway!
I'm a 27 year old female grad student who is lucky enough to have visited family in Japan numerous times. Once, in 4th grade I even attended a Japanese school. Unfortunately I ate kyushoku there every day and only got bento from conbini when we would travel.
I find I make bento pretty rarely since I'm almost done with school (read: super busy) but I only make them for myself -- not the hubby. I hope to make them for our kids someday though!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I live in the mountains, in Canmore, Alberta, Canada. I'm in my 30's, and am a cook for a living. Interesting to be a woman working in a male dominated field!

I love this site, because I love trying new recipes. Also, I travelled to Japan 5 years ago, and you're explaining retroactively some of the things I ate when I was there. :-)

Mostly, I make bentos for myself, but this has been a great resource when I need to cook vegetarian for friends or family. That's what I love to see, so keep it coming!

Thanks!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Well I'm a 24 year old male and I work as a Guest Services Manager for a hotel in the land of snow and ice, Minnesota.

I enjoy making bentos for myself to eat at work because they can be eaten at room temp. Especially helpful since I can count on one hand the number of times I've been able to finish a hot meal while at work. I also make up a smaller bento for my wife who can't cook.

I'd like to see more ideas for jazzing up rice that doesn't involve nori or fish (I've tried to acquire a taste for nori with no luck and finding even decent quality fish around here without selling my first born is impossible). I currently use a shiso furikake which is good but is getting a little same ol same ol.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I live in the suburbs of Chicago and only discovered bento a couple years ago at a local restaurant. I just hit the 40+ group this year and work as an administrative assistant for a group of engineers.
My son is actually the bento maker in the house, but we are all starting to enjoy taking bentos for our lunches. We love the soboro recipe that you posted some time back and want to learn to make tamago so that it looks pretty.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I’m Jenny and live in Sweden. I study for the time being at an art school and am 21 years old. I mainly make bentos for myself 3 days a week which I have for lunch at school. From time to time do I make a extra bento for a classmate of mine to help her out a bit (she usually doesn’t eat anything for lunch). I have been making bentos for 1.5 years now and I really do enjoy it! :)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi, I'm 21 year old girl and from Turkey. I study German- English Translation at university. I make bento for the days that I don't have time to eat out between lessons. Unfortunately I have to put simple things in the bento, so I can eat in 15 minutes.
For the suggestion, I would like to see more side dish recipes:)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi Maki,
I am from Singapore. I am 40 years old, mother of two and a human resources practitioner. I make bentos for my kids everyday.
