The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

JUST-BENTO_bookcover.jpg

The giveaway is now closed. The winners will be contacted and announced later this week. Thank you everyone for entering!

To commemorate the new edition of The Just Bento Cookbook, I’m going to give away 2 signed copies! The new edition has the exact same content as the previous edition, but just has a slightly different form factor (a wee bit smaller (but not much), and no dust jacket (but the cover is printed in full color)). I am very glad it has been reprinted again; as I mentioned before, the original publisher closed its doors in March, but the publishing rights were picked up by another division of the same parent company, Kodansha USA. So anyway, here’s your chance to get your hands on one! It’s too late to get the book to the winners before the holidays, but it should arrive in the New Year when you’re all ready to tackle those healthy/frugal eating resolutions.

All you have to do is leave a comment to this post (not an email reply if you are reading this by email: click on the title to come to site, and post your comment entry here!) Be sure to put your email address in the appropriate box (it will be hidden from prying spammers, not to worry) so that I can contact you if you win. In the body of your comment, state the following:

  • where you are located in the world (everyone is eligible, as long as you live somewhere where mail can reach you)
  • your gender, profession and general age bracket (you can be vague about the age ^_^ I’m just a curious bunny about who my readers are)
  • who you make bentos for primarily - or plan to make bentos for if you havent’ started
  • (optional) What you want to see on JustBento. A specific recipe? A how-to? I’m all ears!

Only one entry/comment per person please! The deadline for posting your comment is 23:59:59 of Monday, December 19th CET (Central European Time). Two winners will be chosen at random, and I’ll contact them next week and announce them as soon as they’ve responded.

So…I look forward to seeing your comments! Good luck!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I live in a small town in Oklahoma, middle America. I am female, and an interlibrary loan librarian for a large system. I'm 29 years old and will be making bentos for myself, as I am the only one in the household interested.
So far I am very new to bento making, but have several boxes I'm ready to use and a couple of onigiri molds. I need fast and easy things to put together, or good meal pieces that can be frozen.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm in Fargo, North Dakota, USA. Female, working in the publishing/mass communications industry, age 28.
I mainly make bentos for myself, but I've made a few for my husband.
I like to see interesting ways to pack food in containers. The hardest part for me is figuring out how to get my food arranged in the box!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi, I'm Jey and I work in a genetics lab in Massachusetts (US) and in my mid 20s. I found out I am gluten sensitive, so I've been making bentos to make food without flour more fun. :P

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Where I live: Recife, Brazil
I'm a student of 20years old who is about to start a postgraduation away from home, so bentos would be really welcome, since i'll be living in a budget..
I'll be making bentos primarily for myself, but who knows, right?

I love your site, especially the recipes for bento stash.. i'd love to see more of it, if possible!

Get better Maki, we all miss you :D

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hello!

I'm 19 years old and I am a lady who lives in the Land of the Great White North,Canada! Currently I work for an eletronics retailer, but I want to make baking or graphic design my life long career. I make bentos for myself right now, but plan on making them for my boyfriend when we move in together to help promote a healthy and balanced lifestyle for the both of us.

I would love to see "dessert bentos" personally. Even though I try to live healthy, my sweet tooth gets the best of me ^_~

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I just moved from Los Angeles to San Jose (California, not Costa Rica). I'll be 50 all too soon. I dress like, act like, and earn my living as a professor. I make bentos for myself most weekdays.

I come here for the recipes and the occasional personal tidbits, although the photos are quite inspiring too.

And let the record show that I already own a copy of your book! Should I win, I will give away mine to a deserving friend and keep the signed one for myself. Yes, I know that I would give away the signed one if I were a better person, but I'm not. Shikataganai.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

ooohh this sounds great! ^^

I`m an almost-22-year-old girl (my birthday is on the 24th) from the Netherlands. I study Japanese here.

Although I`m a student and do primarily eat bread for lunch (or buy my lunch at the cafetaria), I do love bento`s. I often use bento-recipes for breakfast or dinner as well. I try to eat as little chemicals and preservatives and other such junk, so this site has offered me some great tips and ideas to eat not only Japanese, but also healthy and chemicals-free.

Considering my busy schedule (and lately, my lack of proper food), and considering that I`m doing an work-experience internship next year, I should maybe practice making actual bento`s a bit more. Right now I`m just tired all the time, and while a good bento might not be a miraculous cure for that, it will certainly help get more energy to make it through the day a bit better ^^

There`s not really a specific thing I would like to see on justbento. Just keep going the way it`s going now =) (and make sure you get back to health first!!)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Ola!

I´m a 23 year old design student from Zagreb, Croatia. Every term I host a bento workshop at my college, and your page is a great source of information for me. I mostly make bentos for myself and I eat them at my college, but I always do a bit more so I can share it with my colleagues. I also do bentos for my boyfriend when he goes on tour, he is a musician :) There isn´t anything special I would like to see more on your page, just keep up the good work, but I especially liked your post about sandwiches in Japan and bentos at train stations.

Happy holidays!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Enjoy reading your blog. I'm in California and would like to make bentos for my family. I'm a mom in my 50s and am a jack (jane) of all trades. I especially like ideas for hot item bentos and the tools you use. We have a thermos type jar but it isnt' great. It's nice to see what other tools are out there. I also like your non-traditional bentos. I lived in Japan and the tradition ones bring back memories but my kids seem to like other things in theirs.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi Maki! Writing from sweet Italy, I'm a young student and make bentos primarely for myself and my fiancé. Keep the good work with the site, the more traditional Japanese recipes, the better ;)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I currently live in the US, but enjoyed more than five years teaching and exploring the bentos in Japan. I'm a female librarian who just entered her fabulous 50's: I make bentos for myself with choice bits saved for Arthur the cat. Always appreciate the how-to's and pictures of regular everyday bentos as well as the over the top creations.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi,
I am french and live nearby Grenoble. I am 54 and work as a secretary. I always brought my lunch with me. My daughter and I watch dramas and we were first interested in the bentos the lead actress made when she was in love. I discovered your blog searching for bentos. I read everything in the archives. and from that moment on I tried to put in one plastic box what I put in 3 before. Then I bought one in Switzerland with compartments.
I do not try new recipes. I just put my everyday cooking in a box. I am more a veggie. I do not cook with sauce or heavy to be able to work well in the afternoon. I do not put a lot efforts in the beauty of what I eat. but from time to time I make something special for my daughter.
I still have 2 boxes because I love salad and it takes a lot of place. sometimes I think the portions in bentos are just too small !
I am interested in everything. I learned a lot in japan culture from your blogs. you write very well and I find everything interesting. As I have to prepare things quickly I usually don't try foreign cooking when I work which would take me more time. but you would laugh at the stares or the comments I have from my co-workers, who are all men working hard outside, when they saw my sushis, onigiri, tofu or some attempt in décoration !

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I love to learn how u decorate your Bento so beautifully, and of course try out your recipes. Hope you are feeling better everyday. Rest well :-D

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm a male grad student in his 20s living in Los Angeles. I love your recipes because making bentos for myself has helped me save tons of money (very important as a student).

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I am 62.
From the Big Island of Hawaii.
Make Bentos for myself and my husband.
Would like to see vegan/glutenfree/raw bentos.
I totally enjoy the artistic aspect of the creative process of making food look oishi (or in Hawaiian - ono)
Love to have your book to give me fresh ideas.
You are doing a great job of educating everyone about bentos.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm a 22-year old graduate student living in San Francisco. I haven't tried making bentos yet, but I'm determined to do so for my lunches next semester, when I'll be on campus all day.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I love your site! I am 28 living in San Francisco, and a lab rat. I love eating bought bentos but I'd like to start making my own to save some money. I love your how-tos, they are very informative and easy to follow. I would love to see more tips on time management and portion control (I always end up with way more than I intend).

Hello I would love to win a copy of this book.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm 41 and from the Midwest, USA. Missouri to be more precise. I make bentos for my daughter, who is in culinary school to become a pastry chef. I used to make bentos for my son as well, but as he's in that awkward teenage phase where he inhales everything, I don't have a bento box large enough for him. I buy bento supplies online, as well, since there really isn't a local source for them. I really enjoy your blog, though some ideas for garnishes that aren't tomatoes or carrots would be really appreciated, as those are my daughter's least favorite veggies. Also, more finger food bentos would be great, as she works at college as well as going to classes, so often times doesn't get a change to sit and eat, just nibble on the run.

Thanks so much for the excellent job you do on your blog, I really appreciate this opportunity to win your book!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

The bentos I make are for myself primarily for lunch every day. I live in the United States, am a woman in my forties and work in a clinic. I've borrowed this book from the library and would love to have a copy of my own!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Im a 28 year old vegan lawyer located in Spain. Started making bentos for myself this June and I got hooked up immediately. I'm also thinking about trying to make a living of this in a not so distant future; I love cooking, why not make some money of it? I would like to see more vegan/vegetarian bento recipes for us veggies. Fantastic site btw!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hello Maki!

I'm a 20 year old, female, Canadian university student. I took some time off after high school to work full time and earn money, and it was during that time that I came across your website and started making bentos for myself. I'm not much of a cook, but I've found a lot of the recipes here easy to do and very delicious. This year I'm on a meal plan at university, and I'm quite tired of the food being served there. Next year I'll have to cook for myself again, and I'm definitely planning to do more of the recipes on this site. It would be great to get a copy of your book so I can try the recipes in there as well.

I enjoy reading all the recipes on this site, as well as the articles you sometimes write on here. My favourite types of recipes are the ones with really simple/common ingredients, because I get really sad when I see a delicious looking recipe for something and I realize I can't do it because I can't find the ingredients here.

Thanks for everything Maki, I hope you're doing well!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'd love the chance!

1) I'm in Brooklyn, NY
2) I'm a 28-year old woman who works in publishing (and wishes her company published your book!)
3) myself and my spouse
4) I'd love to see bentos that might use the same ingredients in different ways (like stretching one protein over the course of the week)

Thank you!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm 21 and am a college student attending UTPB in Odessa, Texas. I'm currently a geology major and loving it, not exactly what I want to do with my degree, though.

I've been reading the blog for awhile now and finally decided to buy a bento box and rice maker. I haven't made any yet, but I'll be making them for my work and school lunches.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi Maki!

Wish I could finally get my hand in your book!!

I am from Canada, I am a female grad student in her late twenties! I've been making bento for me for about 3 years now, actually I've started making bento when I came across your website!

I actually adore the content from both of your website! I would ask to change a thing! Keep up the good work, it is much appreciated!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi there! I just turned 40 and live in Zürich, Switzerland. I love the idea of making bento boxes but somehow haven't created any so far. I LOVED the ekiben when I was in Japan recently and decided that since there is nothing that delicious offered at the train stations here in Switzerland, I will make my own ekiben next time I travel! I can only imagine the jealous stares I will get from fellow passengers! :)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm from Portland, OR, USA. 36 and I work as information and referral specialist. I usually create bentos for me and my husband. I am now 6 months pregnant and can't wait to make them for our little boy in the future. Just knowing how excited I am at lunch time with a wonderful bento, I look forward to instilling this healthy and fun eating experience in my son as well.

Thanks for chance to win!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I am located in Ketchikan, Alaska
I am a 34 year old female technical analyst for the home health dept of a small hospital. (so I'm more comfortable with computers than kitchens)
I try to make lunch for my daughter, as it is healthier, however I find I run out of time. I would like to make lunch for myself as I really need to lose weight (sitting in front of a computer is bad for the waist line) however if I don't have time to make my daughter a lunch, I don't have time to make it for me.
I need things that are fast and easy and healthy. (and not intense with the cooking skills. I can put together sandwiches sometimes, but I'm not very original with the filling...)
However, I love your website, and sometimes I try tricks from it. sometimes they even turn out edible! LOL
Thanks1!!
- Carena

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I would love to win this book. I'm currently based in the US and in my mid-30s. I want to start making bentos for my family. I would like to see more child-friendly recipes as my boy turns 2 soon and I want to prepare bentos for him to bring to school.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I am a fifteen year old high school student in the US of A. I recently discovered bentoing when cafeteria food took a turn for the worse and have never looked back since. I love the creative recipes you post and look forward to more.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

* I'm living in Arkansas, USA.
* I'm a twenty-something female, going to school part-time and I also run my own nonprofit animal rescue.
* I make bentos for myself, and hoping to start making them for my boyfriend as well once I've had more practice making the ones for myself.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm a male, 20 year old undergraduate student living in Los Angeles.

I started cooking bentos mainly for my apartment. Actually, I wasn't packing them as bentos at this time, but was just eating them for dinner in order to get better at cooking. It was very helpful that the recipes were generally easier and quicker to prepare, leaving more time for studying.
However, near the end of the summer, when I was no longer in school, I started making bentos for my friends for more practice, and in order to serve stressed-out people over the summer.

I'm particularly interested in seeing vegetarian or other foods that don't use red meat, since one of my friends doesn't eat red meat.

Your book and websites are fantastic! I already own a copy of the book, but I'd love to be able to give one to one of my friends, so they can be able to cook these meals too!
I hope you're recovering well. I can't wait to see more posts once you're better!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi there!

I recently moved to the Los Angeles area from Northern California and I'm lovin' it.

I am 40 years old and work in the energy industry.

I make bentos mainly for myself and sometimes my partner when he is interested.

Being a recent LA transplant, I have developed an interest in Korean food, which wasn't available where I used to live. I wouldn't mind seeing some Korean-influenced bentos as well as some spicy Japanese ones too. I have a tube of Tobanjiang that needs using. Thanks for your great blogs!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm San Francisco, CA and I make the bentos. I love your site and visit it often getting ideas and recipes.

I'd like to see more recipes of any kind.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I am over 50 and live in Seattle with my husband and just graduated from college daughter. I pack lunches for my husband every day. Sometimes they are bentos if I have the ingredients. Several recipes are now staples in my house, takenoko rice, karaage, salted chicken, etc. I also learned how to sasagaki cut my gobo which I love to do now.

I love the Japanese recipes and the cultural background information too. Thanks!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hello there.

Love the website. I am located in upstate New York. I am a 30 year old female and a nurse.

I make bentos for myself. Nothing makes me feel more special than a lil bento all for me!

where you are located in the world (everyone is eligible, as long as you live somewhere where mail can reach you)
your gender, profession and general age bracket (you can be vague about the age ^_^ I’m just a curious bunny about who my readers are)
who you make bentos for primarily - or plan to make bentos for if you havent’ started

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm located in Elk Grove, CA. I am (18) and in college. I make bento because it's easy to whip something up either in the morning or in advance. When you're in college, it costs a bunch to buy lunch everyday, so making bento saves me a ton of money with very little (unless I'm feeling crafty >:D) effort. I hope you're feeling better Maki, and thanks for the opportunity!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm 33 and recently located from a 3-year development posting in the West Bank/Palestine/Israel back home to DC. I make bentos for myself and my boyfriend. We started eating them abroad to fulfill cravings for non-middle eastern food apart from the sandwich/pizza/pasta rut. I would love to see even more about bento meal planning and make-ahead strategies on the site.
ps -- I already know i'm getting the book for christmas, but would love to have a signed copy! Then I can pass the bento book love along to someone else!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm from London, UK

A graphic designer in her early 30s

I make bentos for my lunch. I love the boxes and the idea of fitting a variety of healthy things into it. The food is so colourful and it's fun to eat. I'm aiming for a healthy lifestyle so i would love to see more "diet" recipes. Baked not fried, low fat varieties, less carbs etc.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi,
I'm from Zagreb, Croatia's capital
I'm female, a librarian, aged 29
I just started a full time job, and with it started packing lunches. For now it is mostly savoury muffins, but I do plan to expand my repertoire :-)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

21, in the midwest. student for apparel design, male
i mainly make them formyself when i take it to the sewing labs for lunches when i dont have time to eat lunch between classes, i usually make them the night before in the dorm room. only got a rice cooker. ive made prosperity cakes, and other steamed stuffs to pack and munch on during the day. maybe something rice cooker related besides just rice?(ive done cake, stirfry and all that stuff all in the rice cooker and the steamer section before) on the blog would be nice to read :)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Washington,DC
Female, Acting/Runway Instructor, recently reached adulthood ;)
I make bentos for myself, sometimes my dad and occasionally my younger siblings.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm a 36 yr old mom, fiance and Accounts Receivable clerk for a trucking company in Arkansas, USA. My daughter asked me to check out bentos as she is in love with all things Japanese. I fell in love with the organization and creativity of them. I now make bento lunches for myself, my daughter and my fiance. My daughter gets people stopping by to admire her lunch at school and my fiance says all his office mates are jealous of his lunches. The girls he works with always say "She sure must love you a lot!" Which of course I do!

I enjoy seeing more "non traditional" Bentos since I often put our lunches together with pieces from the previous nights dinners.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm a 31-year old guy in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA, working at a little technology company making fiberoptic probes and equipment for shock physics experiments. I usually just pack myself or my wife some leftovers or a sandwich, but I love the idea of bentos. When I have kids, I'm looking forward to packing fun bento-type lunches for them.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm a 41 year old from Vancouver, Canada. My parents are Japanese, though I was born here. I remember my mom making omusubi for me - mmm! I used to be an engineer but am not a stay-at-home mom with 2 little boys. I've only just this instant realized that I haven't made any for my eldest (in Grade 1) so I will have to fix that in the new year! No specific requests for JustBento - it's all great! (I hope this isn't a duplicate comment as something weird happened...)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I am a 47 year old male Technical Training Instructor in Oklahoma.

My current eating habit are abysmal and I stumbled across your website looking for healthier lunch options. I make the bentos for myself and I love them!

I have been looking for a copy of this book for the past three months and I am super excited it has come out! I've already ordered a copy from Amazon but I would LOVE to have an autographed copy! Then I could give my other copy to my son, a college freshman going to Oklahoma State University. GO POKES!!! :)

As far as what kind of recipes I would like to see, just keep up the great work you are doing!

I don't make any bentos at the moment, really, with all my kids too young for school still, but I'd like to start making them for my husband for lunches at some point in the hopefully not-too-distant future.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi maki! I live in colorado, in a town best known as that "freaky hippy place?" I am a 20 year old female who is a student at the local comminity college. I make bentos for myself, though I'd love to get my dad into them.

As for the website I would like to see a how-to on putting flavors together. I like some of the stuff on your bento boxes but I try and mix and match. It would be good to see how you put the items in the boxes together.
