This forum section was feeling a bit neglected so I thought I'd start something :)
Is there anywhere in the world that you would want to go to, that you've never been to before in your life, just for the food?
For me, it's really hard to choose between Morocco, Turkey, India, China, etc... but I think my top pick would probably be Morocco right now. I love the combination of spices used in Moroccan cooking. And the colors you see of photos there are amazing.

I'd have to go for India, followed clossly by China, Thailand, and Japan.
It's not just that I love food from asian countries. I'm very lucky in that even at 17 I've seen a lot of Europian countries as well as Austrailia, newzeland, the US, and Canada. So I'd like to go and taste foods I've never (properly) tasted before. I literally spend hours a day fantisizing about food, so I won't bore you with my incredebly extensive lists of what I would eat their.
Kyoto.
It will be a while for my hubby and I but we'll get there. If we can I want to take the walking tour from Kyoto to Tokyo.

... a place where I have never been before...
A tropical island with all its fruits and seafood, maybe. Or India.
If it is a single place, it would be Mumbai.
And in order to get it back to bento... the Tokaido Shinkansen Ekiben Tour.
Definitely Japan for starters, followed by Italy and Germany. Also a huge fan of Latin cuisine so I'm thinking possibly Spain as well.. So many choices!
hmmmm..... Japan, Ireland, London, Mexico, and... I think that's about it.
Cooking is nothing more than controlled madness.
Portugal, Sichuan, Lebanon, and then I want to tag along with guruman on the ekiben tour. If I were able, I'd love to take the trains all over Japan, and camp nojuku-style.

I think I'd want to sample the authentic versions of the food I eat on a daily/weekly basis. I've never been to India or Italy so I'd love to know how my meals match up with the real thing!
Anywhere but here!! I have not had the luck to be able to travel world wide outside the U.S. I've never even been to NYC or the West Coast!! I am so under educated as far as other cultures go (i try to keep myself informed though, mostly Japan XD) and I'd love to try foods from anywhere. Japan is probably at the top of my list along with several other asian countries. I want to be able to try all of the yummy foods across Europe as well.
I feel so close-minded for never having been anywhere. T_T Someone pay for a plane ticket for me??
Yum yum bento yum yum!

Singapore Hawker centers
Vietnam

I adored the street stalls in Bangkok, so I'd like to go to almost anywhere with lots of street stalls. I like the local Farmers' Market for that reason - and the produce of course, but it's the food stalls that make it great.

I don't think I could pick just one, although I know I would not go back to Russia for food purposed. Too much grease and starch, not enough vegetables. I am pretty familiar with Hispanic and European cuisine, since that is what I grew up with, so I don't really want to go any where to experience those.
I'd like to try sushi in Japan. On the west coast of the USA we have a lot of decent sushi places, but I'd like to compare them to Japan and see if there is a big difference. Plus I love Nishikigoi so I have to go to Japan sometime for that too, Sushi and Koi sounds like a strange combo, but it would be awesome!
Then maybe Greece, and Turkey, I loved the food in Spain when I was there in 1976 and would love to go back, nothing in the world like good Paella.
Mostly I would go to see other countries more for the culture than the food, living in the San Fransisco Bay Area, I'm really spoiled when it comes to good ethnic food.

Anywhere but here!
The only foreign place I've been to is Italy, which had tons of absolutely delicious food... in fact the food was my second favourite thing!
I'd be a bit worried eating in a foreign place that isn't english friendly, though... who knows what you might end up eating.
All the more incentive to learn a new language! ^_^
When I first went to Russia, my survival Russian was not fully developed yet so I had to experiment a little bit. I knew going there that I probably would not be able to avoid eating meat, so I just accepted that and tried just about anything I could vaguely pronounce and could kind of gather what it was. It was a very good learning experience, just not so pleasant on my stomach.
There were some very gross things that I ate while I was there, and some not so unpleasant things that I tried. Piroshki (Пирошки) with a cabbage and potato filling, made by a little old lady at a road side stand outside of Novgorad (Новгород), which was one of the best things that I ate the entire time I was in Russia.
I think next time I try to learn a language I will try to learn one where fruits and vegetables are staples of the diet, so I won't cry when my mom brings me some fruit salad to eat on the way home from the airport.
Probably Japan or Morocco!
And I'd probably come back to Argentina to have some of those wonderful meats!! <3

Italy, or at least some point on the mediterainian, I love it all...

...as many countries as I can travel to. Most important for me is how the food is prepared, where it is served, the freshness and authenticity of preparation. It is equally thrilling to have giant noodles at a restaurant in Tokyo, where the clientele are mostly sumo wrestlers, to a traditionally prepared Oaxacan meal, to a BBQ at a state fair where ribs are prepared with a sauce from someone's secret family recipe. Some ultimate food destinations just happen along the way if we're open to trying new things out.
Japan. I'd like to eat my way around the town I used to live in, especially the wonderful okashi made by an little old man who is the 6th generation of his family to run his shop. Our town is 'famous for' persimmon, crab and oysters, so I'd have all of those. Then I'd eat my way around Japan, trying every local speciality in every town I could.
On a completely different note, I'm quite infatuated with regional American foods. I sampled some interesting (and artery clogging) dishes in Kansas and Indiana a few years ago, and would love to eat my way around the midwest and the south. Even Taco Bell is exotic to someone who has never had it before!
I tend to be a bit wary of new foods. I hate spending money on something and then not like it. My brother recently brought me to a Greek/Lebanese restaurant and had me try this cuisine for the first time. I was extremely pleasantly surprised. So I'd like to go to Greece. Pictures I've seen make it look beautiful, and I wouldn't mind going to try out the food.

Japan is top of my list. I went to Tokyo twice and would like to travel more in Japan....like Osaka, Kyoto, Hokkaido and many more cities and towns. Love the food and drinks (beer & Sake), just amazing!
Thailand
South Korea
Suriname
Malaysia
Japan still remains a dream food destination, I don't think I've even begun to uncover all that's on offer there, but I'm sure that could be said of any country's cuisine. That's certainly the case with me and Spain, there's still so much I haven't tried and am ignorant about, and it's probably the cuisine I know best.
Eventually, I should be able to arrange 'stopovers' on the way to Japan so that I can try the food in Thailand, South Korea and Malaysia, but a trip to Suriname may be more difficult. For now I have to content myself with visits to the Netherlands whenever I want to sample Surinamese dishes.
One of my stops would be Maki's kitchen, no matter what country that may be in !!!
Regards,
Balifly
Thank you, i'm flattered ^_^;
I'm quite lucky, I've already travelled quite a lot and visited many dream food destinations, like Japan or Thailand, and living in Europe I've already spent a few holidays in France, Italy or Spain.
I would be curious to visit India, Morocco or Greece, on a culinary point of view. And I don't know a lot about south and north american food, I'm sure there are some nice tastes to discover.
Mhh I would say Japan and maybe a country like Norway or Sweden. Of course in Germany are a lot of Japanese restaurants but i am not sure if the taste is the same. And I would like to try some swedish and norway food because i have never heard anything special about the food over there so i would love to try something traditional.
"And so the lion felt in love with the lamb" - Twilight
Singapore, to try chili crab
Laos, to see how the cuisine differs from Thailand
Turkey, to visit the market in Istanbul
I just got back from China, where I had REAL Peking Duck in Bejing, bit into juicy Shanghai dumplings, and had things I never tried before, like barbeque herb-crusted fish that tasted almost like tandoori, with lots of ground cumin.
I was in India last fall, and had Rajasthani cashew nut sauce in Udaipur, vegetarian thali served on a banana leaf in Agra, and royal Rajasthani cusiine in Jaipur. I really wanted to try the street market samosas, but my guide wouldn't let me.
I travel alot, you see. And what better reason is there to travel, but for the food? From street market satay pork in Bangkok, creamy Dal Makhini in Nepal to sweet and savory banana leaf tamales in Chiapas, my taste buds have led the way around the globe. Simply recalling these dishes makes my mouth water!
But my favorite city for food is Kyoto. I've complied a list of just some of my favorite restaurants here: http://www.savoryjapan.com/travel/kyoto/kyoto.html
To me, it's not just flavor that makes a great meal, but ambience, tableware, service and history. I'm still in the process of writing additional articles from a trip in May/June.
Readers will notice the lack of restaurants in Tokyo and Osaka, and this is due simply to a lack of time, and the fact that my husband keeps longing to return to Kyoto. I'm trying to get him to think about Laos for this winter (with a stop in Tokyo) but we'll see.
Happy trails!

Japanese Cuisine, Travel and Culture
I'm Vietnamese and of course Vietnam is my first destination for food. I'm from the North so for me the food in the north, especially Hanoi, is the best. I love the foods on the streets. I love riding motor bike with my friends to taste the food from different corners of the city. Try Vietnamese food and you will see the differences from Chinese and Thai foods.
For Europe, my favorite is Italian and Spanish foods. But however, they're too heavy for me. Worst food ever is Munich food with a big pile of meat in your dish :(
My hubby and I are travelling to Japan this November and we are looking forward to tasting the real Japanese :)
Have to say that it's Indonesia, follow closely by Japan, and China.
weird choice to choose Indonesia, eh? just wait until you try one. Every province is super different from others and all of the food is to die for. Not to mention each province has tons of food variety.
while malaysian's food did resemble some of the cooking (sadly, the world acknowledge some of Indonesian cooking as malaysian, due to all the publicity) , I find that Indonesian's much more delicious, not to mention more variety. Try some Soto Betawi (there are other soto styles depending on the region, like soto kudus, soto medan, soto ayam, etc....), Pempek Palembang, Martabak manis(unlike Indian's murtabak, Indonesian murtabak is more like a sweet thick chinese pancake), Sate Padang, Rendang, Opor ayam, Klappertart (this one actually legacy of the Holland troops), etc. There are still a lot, but there's no end to the list, so I might as well stop here. XD
For Japan food, definitely Gyoza! And crab, oden, okonomiyaki, takoyaki, unagi, and the sweets!
There are other places and food too, just couldn't remember it right now. XD
I live in Boston but my sister in law is from Lafayette LA....and there is plenty of good food in Louisiana too!
OMG ... I was just thinking about this ... When I get a bit older I plan to go to ( In this order) England, Germany, and then of course japan. And I want to study a year abroad ... Think of how much fun a bento enthusiast could have ...
Foodies do it better.
countries: japan, italy, france, germany, mexico, spain, china (although i've been there already)
cities: los angeles, san francisco, chicago, miami, naples, madrid
specific/types of restaurants: per se, el bulli, masa, the fat duck, ramen shops in japan, sushi bars in japan, tapas bars in spain, beer halls in germany, a real italian family dinner in italy, anywhere that has great food!
Countries I'd like to go to in order: Japan, China, India, South America (continent I know), Thailand, France, Spain, Turkey, Morocco and then maybe Germany.
i'd like to go somewhere with fresh seafood, like brittany, but i've already been there. somewhere that's good for lobsters and oysters.
japan is on top of the list, but it's not so much about the food but more for the general experience, museums, people.. food, too, but museums mainly.
i've already eaten my way through most of europe and the mediterrean up to morocco... good food, but no new destinations.
i still want to try "real" south american food, i'd like to try south african and i don't really know where to start with the asian countries.
there's still some stuff in northern europe waiting for me, too. mushrooms in sour cream, polish roasted goose, russian berry cobblers... and probably kwas! i don't think that i'll like that, but i have to try just to know if i do.
traditional black sea area cooking could be very interesting, it's like the russian italian cooking, i guess. wine, fresh sunflower oil (it's just as lovely as virgin olive if you can get good cold-pressed quality! tastes just like a field of sunflowers smell in summer. try some, if you can find it!), fresh vegetables..
hey, there are 5 people here who at least mentioned germany! what would you like to eat over here?
rehfilet
i don't know much about german cuisine itself but i do know about german beer :)
that would definitely be something i would check out while there
My food destination would probably be Hawaii. I loved living there. The blend of asian foods as well as the polynesian flavors are fantastic. I love all the tropical flavors. I think being in the environment helped make the foods taste as good as they did.
This isn't as exotic as many of the entries here, but *Seattle* has become a food mecca for me. Of course there is all that coffee, chocolate and salmon, but I go straight to The Crumpet Shop. Situated just outside of Pike's Market, they make fresh crumpets throughout the day. A fresh toasted crumpet slathered with butter, marmite, nutella or salmon spread accompanied by a big mug of real tea --my idea of heaven. And even tho I am not a pizza lover, a few months ago I manuvered a trip to Seattle just to eat at Serious Pie, a truly wonderful flat, rectangular pizza, whose crust is a cross between puff pastry and a really good baguette.
Last week I followed a discussion here about canned tuna and discovered the Tuna Guys just outside of Seattle. I ordered a sampler for my DH's birthday and was amazed at how different it was from any other canned fish. I am now trying to figure out a way to get up to Seattle so that I can buy a couple of cases and "save" the shipping. ^_^
AND there is also Uwajimaya, a great Japanese food & gift complex.
Well....
Being as I am part Italian, I would LOVE to go to Italy!!!^^
But I would also LOVE to go to Japan!!!
(As I am already teaching myself Japanese) (Uber hard! >.<)
I would also like to go to Korea, Thailand, or China!!!!
:/ But I think Japan wins.
As I dont know any Italian. >.<
North-east Brazil (for things like moqueca, acaraje ...)and Sao Paulo
Spain(specially andalucia and pais vasco)
Tokyo
Portugal
Hong kong!!
Japan first. After that China and India :D But for now I just stalk other international food-blogs ^_^

Bento-Tipps für jeden Tag! / Bento-tips for every day!
I've been to these cities before, but I was so impressed with the food (more so than the landmarks and whatever else was there) that I want to go again and again:
Lunch in Tokyo - even cheap eats are delicious
Dinner in Bangkok - cheap and delicious, but pick a clean place
Desserts in Hong Kong - desserts and seafood are awesome
I guess my "dream" destinations would be France, Spain, and Korea.
Definately I would travel back to Japan (and some day hopefully, I will)! I've visited Tokyo once and there were so many foods I didn't have time to taste...
Thailand - I would love to try authentic thai cuisine - all the variations! Vietnam, too...
Peru!!!!!! But wait, I've already been there =). Peruvian food is just delicious. Because of immigration, it has French, Italian, Chinese, Basque, Arabic, and African influences. I've been lucky enough to go there a few times, as my grandpa is Peruvian and grew up there. My favorite dishes are lomo saltado, ceviche, papa a la huancaina, causa, and ahi de gallina. Peruvian cuisine is centered mainly on potatoes (so many varieties!), corn, meat, seafood, chiles, rice, and vegetables. The desserts are great too- yummy alfajores and picarones. There's a sweet purple corn drink called chicha morada that is heavenly, plus these little toasted corn kernel called canchitas that are often served as appetizers. If you have a good Peruvian restaurant in your area, I suggest you try it! Of places I haven't been to I would pick Japan first, then Greece.

I'm all too exposed with Asian foods, so I'm probably more interested in African and European food. US food sucks, seriously. I think the serving size is unbearably huge, and most foods are overloaded with sugar and greasy fats :(
Live to eat!
I have to speak up a bit for American food...there is very good American food, but the kind that has made it out of the country is mostly of the fast-food, big-portion, greasy-spoon type (I know for instance that TGIFriday's is quite popular in the UK...that is not the pinnacle of American cuisine.) There are many great regional specialities in the U.S....
I agree with Balifly and would love to eat at Maki's kitchen. But as far as whole countries go, I first would like to eat in Japan. Even though I eat a lot of Asian food, especially Japanese, I would like to taste the really authentic stuff, as well as the more obscure recipes. (I hate how so many people and even restaurants specialize in teriyaki-flavored food, as if that was the food that really spoke for Japan the most.) In particular, I'm interested in the more rural-area recipes. After Japan, though, I'd like to go to India and anywhere in Africa. Also, I love Lebanese food. (Shawarmas ftw.)
