Re: What's your box?

I've got 3 sets that are all but adult-like haha.

One of them is a yellow 2-tier Rilakkuma bento that I stupidly had my boyfriend pay TOO much for. I was crazy for it and didn't know about less expensive alternatives at the time. With the box came a separate set of metal utensils in a case. And it came with more plastic utensils in the box. And a bag to boot.

I recently went to Ichiban Kan in san francisco and bought a cherry 2-tier bento with the utensil set and strap.

And I have a hello kitty bento from the dollar tree. :3

All are between 500ml - 530 ml.

Re: What's your box?

On our trip to Seattle, I picked up a Boujour Mie set for my preschool age daughter - because it has kitties on it. We use one or two of the sections of it every day for lunches.

It looks like this.

Re: What's your box?

I just gave in and ordered my first "real" bentobox on Thursday. I decided on the pink Lube Sheep Putifresh box with apples on it I found for what I thought an acceptable price on ebay.. and now I'm waiting for it to come in! :) I'm really excited about it. It even comes with a very cute bag to carry it in.. I guess my boyfriend thinks now that I have serious mental problems - getting all excited about a lunch box and everything..

Besides that I'm using the good old cheap boxes from Migros, which are doing a fine job as well. But, well.. they don't have those cute phrases on that the putifresh boxes have! ^_^

Re: What's your box?

Hi, am new to bento-ing for myself but have been packing food for my 5yrs old son during weekdays for his lunch for abt 2+yrs. He has a triangle shaped box and a pokemon pikachu shaped box, which is really cute.

I recently gotten myself a fish-shaped bento from a japanese restaurant here (you can see the same bento in Bento&Co) and also, very inspired by Maki's single onigiri box, I ordered the pink girlie face one for myself (from Bento&Co), which arrived last week. =) I'm now eyeing on the cool soup tumbler that's being sold in Bento&Co as well. =P Oh, did I mention I'm a stay at home mum who actually doesn't need all these cute bento boxes? heh heh

Re: What's your box?

My box came in today! I was very excited when I picked the parcel up at the post office.. and surprised, because it was so small. It's amazing how neatly that box can be stacked into itself - the tiers just fit into each other, bag into the first, belt into the second, and it doesn't take much space up in my cramped kitchen. Perfect!! And it's sooo pretty.. hach. You notice the exitement, don't you? I just had to share.. ^__^

Re: What's your box?

I have a 2-tier pink Hello Kitty self-locking bento box with a spoon and fork, which I bought off Ebay. I thought it would be a bit small, but I fit plenty in there!!
I would like a thermal one, but I can never find any in my area, and my dad dislikes ordering online, so my purchase was a one off. I LOVE bento boxes, and there are some real cute ones on J-List. I saw an amazing Pikachu one but I'll never get to order it. lol.

Re: What's your box?

Mine is a tiny green, white, and tan bento with Totoro on the front!

I think it was meant for a child (the chopsticks are so tiny!), so its hard to make food that fits in it, however as far as condiments go, in my travels I have found a tiny jar of ketchup that I can refill and also itty bitty bottle of hot sauce!

Since I couldn't find a real furoshiki, I just wrap the whole thing up in a peace sign bandanna. It seems to work well.

Re: What's your box?

I currently have two two-tier boxes in yellow (the colour of the sun... I love summertime!!!!)
one seems to be the standard of Lube Sheep that a lot of people have, without the chopsticks I'm afraid, and the other one is Deli style... I want to order more and I keep drooling over my keyboard everytime I go on a search... when I find a job I'll reward myself with something new!!!

Re: What's your box?

I just got a new bento from a friend who went to Japan. It's a pink polka dot Lube Sheep with a bear on the elastic strap. But I also got food picks! And furikake shakers and mayo containers! Sadly he couldn't find ANY thermal bentos which is what I really want for some reason.

Re: What's your box?

I have just started this project. I am trying to have a baby, so I have been focusing on my nutrition more..

Anyway, I have a Mr. Bento- I don't use it much- lots of "little cups". I have a mini-bento also from zojirushi that I use frequently. It comes in a bag, so I can put a thermos in there as well.

I have the laptop lunchbox (which I use occasionally) but also have the laptop 2.0 which I like better- especially for side dishes, sauces and my vitamin supplements! I have a couple of sandwich boxes and a wrapnmat (which isn't really a "box").

So I have mostly thermal jars and sandwich boxes. Am looking to buy my first real 'bento' soon. Anyone suggest one in a larger size (am sure I will be ravenous when my pregnancy progresses!)

Re: What's your box?

Oh, I forgot, I also have some "parka" glassware. They have tops like locknlocks, but the boxes are glass. I love them for setting gelatin in. I found them on sale at a Korean store for $1.95 each!

Re: What's your box?

I have four boxes, but have only used two. I have a pink Hello Kitty box and a yellow "Smile Duck" box. It is so cute! It says "I love Smile Duck" on the top, has two layers and it's own matching chopsticks. The layers stay banded together with an elastic band.

The so far unuse boxes were on sale at the Disney store; A Mickey and friends red glitter one and a Pooh bear and friends yellow one. The latch broke when I brought it home, but crazy glue has made it good as new!

Re: What's your box?

I found my lock n locks at Target and Ralph's. I think Ralph's is exclusive to Southern California, but you should see some at Target.

In addition to the Lock n Locks (one with four dividers and a couple small snack boxes), I have the giant Fit & Fresh, Lunch on the Go. With the Fit & Fresh I find myself using the top snack boxes and the freezer insert more than I use the actual box as it takes up so much room in my bag.

I *just* picked up two tier 350/220ml grape Putifresh (so cute) and a 2 tier Natural Lunch in beige. I've not tried them out yet, but they look to be pretty functional and a great size - not too small and not Fit & Fresh HUGE. :P

Re: What's your box?

I just started doing bentos a couple weeks ago. I live hours and hours from anywhere I might be able to buy boxes in person, so have to rely on the internet. After several days of searching, I settled for the time being on 3-tiered tiffins for my wife and I (http://www.happytiffin.com/shop/Latch-Tiffins-Three-Tier-Tiffins/c11_5/p...). Using the bottom level for a main dish, top level for a few small sides, and the middle level for a refreezable ice pack has worked really well so far.

Re: What's your box?

I've been using a Classic Mr. Bento for three weeks solid. It is great for hot, cold, or room temperature food. Sometimes I use only the main (middle compartment) for food, usually rice and vegetables, or stew, and the top and bottom for ice as a quick cool method, or fruit, cheese and vegetables.
En route:
http://www.sentou.fr/fr/boutique/produits/details/444-set_2_bols_2_assie...
The maroon one, which reminds me of a wood bento or lacquerware, and

http://www.sentou.fr/fr/boutique/produits/details/446-set_1_bol_1_assiet...

http://www.sentou.fr/fr/boutique/produits/details/469-set_couverts_bebe....

EDIT: The non-partitioned Sentou (round) boxes are a good size for a picnic or for serving. The partitioned box is good for individual meals.
If transporting food in them they require some sort of rubber or elastic band as the lid will not compress or latch on it's own, and they are not spill-proof even with some sort of fastening device.

Edit: I bought this Shaker box for a nice wood bento box. It's very well made with nice color throughout.

Went to the Japan Centre at the weekend and got another 2 boxes and a bag from Muji. One box is an onigiri one which I'll have to be creative with and the other a gorgeous black 2 tier box.

Re: What's your box?

I microwave my lunch, so I like Snapware (the glass kind) and Pyrex. I don't have issues with microwaving plastic containers, but they all warped pretty fast (I like my food HOT) and that's why I switched. The Snapware looks like Lock & Lock, but the container is glass with plastic snap lid and rubber gasket. It prevents leak better than Pyrex.
I have the onigiri box for occasions when I pack it for lunch.
I've used 2-tiered plastic container before, but it warped easily and the lid won't close anymore. I don't think it's meant to be microwavable. It's also a pain to wash all the pieces. I'm sticking to good ol' 2-piece containers.

Re: What's your box?

I have a variety of types depending on what I take for lunch.

Snapware Snap 'N Stack Lunch Box which I love (and am eating out of right now!) I got it for around $3.50 at Jewel and it was exactly what I was looking for--larger and with one section divided.

Snapware Snap 'N Serve (4 c. Rectangle) Not as useful as I'd hoped; I tend to favor my Party Box and Snap 'N Stack whenever possible.

Mini Party Box (left). Also love this one as I like to keep my food separate as much as possible. More often than not I use it with only 2 of the dividers and leave the larger portion for my entree. Also makes it really easy to pull out things that don't need reheated. Glad I got this from Mitsuwa when I did--went back a week or two later and they no longer seem to carry this size.

Also have this cute bento box. I'd always liked the more common pink version; was lucky to find someone selling a blue version for like $5 on ebay. Unfortunately, it seems so tiny to me that I've yet to get actual use out of it beyond a container I keep on my desk to hold candy, business cards and stamps...

Re: What's your box?

I don't know if this is everywhere, but I found my bento in a Borders book store in Maryland. It's a nice two-tiered one that holds a total of 500ml. I haven't looked at the store near me here in Ohio, but I feel it's a good place to check if there's a Borders or a place that sells Happy Noodle products near you.

Re: What's your box?

I have several boxes, but my new favorite is one of the Paperchase boxes from Borders. Unfortunately my nearest store did not have the Happy Noodle boxes (I'm determined to find one somewhere in the area this weekend!), but I did get this one: http://www.paperchase.co.uk/p/472804/lunch-box-enchantment-design.html for only $9!!!

It's quite large, about 4 cups capacity if you fill it to overflowing, which you should if you don't want things to shift like they did on me today. For any vegans or vegetarians who eat bulky and relatively low calorie foods, this one *should* hold enough for a satisfying meal. It does not have a silicone seal and is very definitely not even remotely water tight, but it might be possible to fit a very thin strip of silicone into the lid to make it so.

Re: What's your box?

I personally use a tempered glass "Fridge Storage" box, it's a 1220mL square shaped box with no dividers, it's totally nuke safe and anti leak. Not to mention it only costed 9.99 hahaha. It's downside is its weight though, I really want to get a real bento box in the future, but for now I think the fridge box is just fine

I own one bento box, a two-tier Natural Lunchtime set like the one mead_chick has. It came with a bag, matching pink belt, and matching utensils. Well mine isn't yet here... It's waiting at a friend in Japan for shipping later this week.
But it is this one:

http://www.metaphys.jp/product/product/archives/2010022634.php

I'll probably order other colours as well but for now White it is. The main reason that it's been ordere from Japan is because nobody else wants to take my money. I don't want to signup for a paypal account and that's what all the other stores offer(and no paypal != credit card as they seem to advertise).

Anyway can't wait to get it.

I have that huge Fit and Fresh box a couple of other people have talked about. I bought it at my local Kroger without realizing how bulky it would be. I also have a couple of lock-n-lock style glass boxes from Kroger as well, which I use quite a bit.

I have a 2-tier on the way; pink with trees and apples on it.

We now have Rosti Mepal Lunch boxes; I have the smaller white one; and my fiance has the grey large one.

I prefer boxes like lunchbots (durable, free of harmfull plastics and such), but I like cute/pink boxes.

Re: What's your box?

I have two:

My first one is a metal thermos-style container. Three containers - the bottom is a soup/hot item container that seals with a vent, the middle is a rice/warm item container with a sealing lid, and the top is a container with a snap on lid. A set of chopsticks in a little container hangs on the side. The lid to the whole thing clamps on. Stuff I put in hot in the morning stays that way until well after noon.

My second is a two-tier black bento. It says "Dear Label" on the top, which may be the brand but I'm not sure. I suspect the translation was supposed to read "Special Label" maybe? At any rate it also has what I've been told is the almost-traditional slightly mangled phrasing: "We are passionate about lunch communication" and "The lunch is a good day pastime." It has a snap on top and a compartment in the top for chopsticks. It's 8x3.5x3.5 and actually just a bit big. I love it - simple and easy to use, plenty of room for lots of little treats.

Re: What's your box?

We don't have a traditional box yet... using (I know, I know) some of those rectangular chinese plastic takeout dishes. I also JUST picked up some food storage boxes at World Market because their measurements were very similar to bento box measurements, to give us a better idea on size.. it came with a 525 ml, 825 ml, and 1.2L container that nest, with happy orange tops. Can't beat $4 for 3 containers that are dishwasher/microwave safe and recyclable (#5).

I did want to share: Bento Boxes are included in Amazon.com's current 4-for-3 promotion, for anyone who wants to shop :)

Re: What's your box?

I have three. Two of them are two-tiered, the other is just a single box. One of the two-tiered ones is the blue Lube Sheep dragonfly one. The other is this one: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41GMe6BFvrL._SL500_AA300_.jpg It's 510 ml - 300 ml on top, 210 ml on bottom. The single box is 480 ml and has the same pattern as the yellow one, but it's green and it locks shut.

I bought them all from Daiso, as there's one at my mall. It was all I could do to keep it down to three when I went to buy them the other day! I'll probably end up buying more, too, to be perfectly honest. I like being able to change boxes depending on my mood. :P My blue dragonfly one is my favorite, though.

Hello,

I have been thinking about getting a Zojirushi Classic Bento, but am very interested in your opinion about how bulky these are (can you just put the jar in a back-pack?). How leak-proof are these, and how break-resistent are the latches?

Any thoughts and/or comments would be much appreciated!

Hello MeanBean

Are you enquiring about the Zojirushi lunch jars?

These are a bit on the bulky side (there are smaller kinds available but they house smaller portions) but they will fit into most backpacks.

The contents can leak, generally they don't but it does happen occasionally. This isn't a problem though as the outer cannister contains any inner leaks very well. I've never ever had a problem with the contents spilling out of the outer container. It's very secure.
I've also never had a problem with the outer clasps, they're very sturdy. The biggest 'problem' is avoiding losing the chopsticks and their container. They are extremely well made.

Re: What's your box?

I have been thinking about purchasing either a Zojirushi jar (the Classic Bento: http://www.zojirushi.com/products/slgre), or I found the thermos bento (here: http://global.rakuten.com/en/store/all-zakka/item/dbs901w_s/), but am not sure which one to get! Since you happen to have both, I would love to hear your comments.

Is the Zojirushi too large? I would like something a little smaller for carrying purposes. I'm also not sure if the sight for the Thermos brand I linked above is legit., but I think that would be my ideal bento. Any comments on leakage of the thermos bento?
