Suggestions please.....

It is my birthday. I’d like to treat myself to a nice bento set. Something grown up, with a nice matching bag and chopsticks. It doesn’t have to be a thermal set. Any suggestions guys? Oh and where ever I make my purchase, the supplier has to be able to ship to the UK! Maximum budget I have set aside for this is £40 ($60 or E45) and I’d really like that to be shipping included!

Suggestions welcome please!

Happy birthday! I have no idea what you should get though. I just got a really nice box, but a friend bought it in Japan for me.

Re: Suggestions please.....

I'm sorry I can't give a suggestion either, I can only recommend what I already have, which is the previous model of this lunchbox:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/THERMOS-BENTO-LUNCH-BOX-1T_W0QQitemZ250572544524QQ...
Which was blue rather than orange. I like metal boxes with plastic lids like this as I find them very easy to clean.
The price is even a little less than how I remember from a regular Japanese shop and the P&P charges are very reasonable. Also, as the price is under £18 for the actual box you won't get lumbered with the VAT(17.5%) plus the £12.50 Royal Mail Handling charge. Do watch out for that when ordering!

And I also wish you a very happy birthday!

Happy Birthday! Isn't it fun to hunt for bento birthday stuff? (My mom thought I was crazy asking for a plastic box for Christmas!)

Casa Bento has some lovely sets. I've personally been drooling over the ones like this Concorde Large Design Bento Box. (Though you'd have to find chopsticks to go with it) Or this cool white and clear Tokyo Japan Design Bento Set. It looked like they ship to the UK (and they're just over in France).

Loretta's suggestion looks tempting too!

This Mottainai set is own I own and love. J-list/j-box ships anywhere.

I also have bento sets in my etsy shop and I ship to the UK too.

I hope those suggestions help!

Happy birthday to you!

Scouring Ebay might be a good idea. I've gotten entire lovely sets on Ebay for less than $20 including shipping (unfortunately, none of those sellers have a great price for international shipping). If you have the patience to scroll through twenty pages of Ebay listings, you'll probably find something great.

Sorry for taking so long to come back you guys *blush*
I ended up ordering this box from jlist/jbox

A gorgeous Hello Kitty wagara box. I'm currently waiting patiently for it to arrive from Japan! I'll post it on the blog when it does arrive though :)

Re: Suggestions please.....

Could someone recommend one for me too? There are so many choices I'm a little overwhelmed. I've been using a single tupperware container for a few months, and I'm about fed up with it and ready for the real deal. What I want:

- Fairly plain, and definitely not cutesy. I really have no talent or interest in making the gorgeously decorated bentos I see online, though they are amazing to look at.

- 500-600ml capacity

- Dishwasher safe

- Available in the US. Preferably Amazon, Casa Bento, etc.

Thank you!

Dan

PS: How do I register for the forum? I sent a message to Maki a day or two ago through the Contact Us link on the site, but I don't know if she got it.

Hi Dan, to register for the forum please leave a comment to this post.

For the bento box recommendation....what is your overall budget (including shipping)? I'm also assuming from your name that you are a guy...are you sure 500-600ml is big enough?

Re: Suggestions please.....

Thanks, Maki! I think 600ml is about right. I'm trying to lose weight, and keep my lunches pretty small. A half cup to a cup of rice, a serving or two of one your protein dishes, and some veggies. My current container is a Gladware Entree container, which holds 25oz or about 725ml, and I pack it fairly loosely. I can always throw a small bag of carrots or similar alongside the new one if it's not enough.

I think I've decided on the Bento Colors box (one of the metallic colors). It's a little more than I was hoping to spend, total about $40 US, but it's something I use every day and my current container is really not ideal.

Re: Suggestions please.....

Bento Colors is a very nice box indeed, and you can choose to use one, two or all three of the compartments since they are totally independent of each other, (and put something else in the empty space in the outer box) which is nice! Just be careful when you wash and dry the outer box since I've noticed that the paint may rub off a bit at the edges (the inside compartments, which are the parts you'd be using for food, are fine though)
