i think it depends on what you are cooking. Shiitake's flavor is stronger than in other mushrooms I've tried.

Shitake are wonderful mushrooms; and yes, their flavor is different from other mushrooms. I've even noticed the difference between shitake from Japan and shitake from China. If you tried substituting button mushrooms, for instance, your dish would be flat in comparison to one with shitake.
And while both dried shitake and dried porcini are flavorful mushrooms, they are vastly different. I wouldn't interchange them.
