Hi all,
I've been avoiding buying too many kitchen equipments because I'm currently living in a rented place, and it's such a hassle when I have to move.
But I figured that with all the money I spend buying fresh smoothies everyday, the time has come for me to invest in my first food processor (or blender or smoothie maker? so many names!)..
It'd mainly be used to make smoothies everyday, and the occasional soup...
Would be good if it can also function as a juicer, but that'd be an added benefit, and not a must-have.
Can anyone recommend a good brand?
I'm not too fussy about price though nothing too extravagant :)
Thanks in advance!

Hmmm. A food processor and a blender are different things. Compare http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_processor with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blenders.
A blender is cheaper and takes up less space on the bench, but a food processor CAN have attachments for slicing and grating and juicing. My food processor even has a blender attachment! Of course, the more attachments, the more expensive it's likely to be. Mine has a spice/coffee grinder, the blender, various slicing blades, and a juicer. I really only use the spice grinder and the blender - and of course the food processor. It's a Kenwood and is the best I could find in my price range. I'm not all that terribly happy with it though - it doesn't do as good a job of chopping things as my old Kitchen Wizz did. I just wish I could still get replacement bowls for that.
You can get blenders, which are ideal for smoothies and soup, quite cheaply. If that's all you are making I don't think the brand matters all that much; you're not going to be putting a lot of strain on the motor.

I have one of those 3 in 1 hand blenders for my flat at uni, easily stored away in the cupboard. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Breville-VHB014-Black-Stainless-Blender/dp/B001D... That one in fact! Really useful for soups, making breadcrumbs, pesto, whisking etc etc. I couldn't live without it to be honest!
I'm not short, I'm fun sized ^_^
Are they any good for smoothies? I have one, but I mostly use the whisk attachment for mayonnaise and the stick thing for soups or whatever. They are very handy, I'd have mentioned them if I'd been sure they'd work for smoothies.
If you can afford it (and it's available) I'd recommend a Bamix hand blender. The motor is really strong, it lasts for decades (our old one lasted for like 25+ years before it broke) and it can make smoothies, blend soup in the pot, etc. in a flash. I use my (new) one all the time for such tasks.

Thanks!
This looks good, and it seems there is a distributor in Singapore.
Will check this out ^^
Thanks for the recommendation. I asked my friend, and she said one of the larger department stores in town carries this brand, so I'll go have a look.
Thanks too Bronwyn for the reply ^^
Whoopsie, I messed up!
The reply I posted above is meant to be for this
This might be out of your price range, but the Vitamix is really good. But at $450 for the basic package, it's probably more of a "someday" thing. Still, my boyfriend's family had one, and it was amazing! It could tear up the toughest things into powder, make smoothies and milkshakes with impressive speed, and even make hot soup from the speed and friction of the blending! I'd definitely reccommend something simpler first, but if you ever have $450 to spend and you really like smoothies, the Vitamix is a great investment.

I use it for smoothies, soups, whisking, making breadcrumbs, pesto and everything else!! Haha!
I agree on the Vitamix. I love mine. It's amazing for smoothies. Soups aren't bad either, but it doesn't really cook them.
A food processor won't make smoothies. If you want something that is more multipurpose get a Thermomix.
I had a juicer and sold it. It was such a hassle to clean up and I needed so many carrots to make a cup of juice that it hardly seemed worth it.
I know people who live in small spaces and swear by the Magic Bullet for making smoothies. You can blend it right in the cup you drink out of. It's pretty cheap too.
