Radish ideas?

I bought a bag of radishes on a whim, and now I'm not so sure what to do with them. Does anyone have any suggestions? Bento-friendly or otherwise?

I suppose I could always pop them in a hole in the wall and hope that the Fraggles find them... :)

Re: Radish ideas?

There are two salads that I like to make with radishes, one a Japanese radish and hijiki salad and the other being a Mexican side salad.

The Japanese salad is just some rehydrated hijiki, sliced radish, and green onion marinated in rice wine vinegar, soy sauce and sesame oil.

The Mexican side salad is julienned cabbage, slices of carrots, onion, radishes, and boiled jalapenos (pickled ones can be substituted) marinated in lemon/lime juice and salt.

Both keep well in the fridge for a couple of days and work well in a bento (minus any excess marinade).

I suppose you could just wash 'em and eat 'em with a little salt? You can also make cute mushrooms out of radishes, (check out the howto: http://annathered.wordpress.com/2009/06/21/how-to-make-a-radish-mushroom...

Re: Radish ideas?

My father-in-law would make huge quantities of tsukemono out of them when he was based in Europe (radishes can be very expensive in Tokyo!).
In an email, he described how to make them like this:
"The way of making tsukemono was very simple, say, washing, slicing, then pickling in vinegar with a little bit salt and sliced garlic"
Which, when I recreate them means that I just scrub and slice the radishes, layer them in a glass container, sprinkle on some salt, add a few generous glugs of rice vinegar and throw on some sliced garlic. Then I cover them with a plate to weigh it all down, put another cover on top for hygiene and to contain the smell of vinegar and pop them in the fridge for at least a day.
Very simple, and very nice. I can get through lots of radishes this way! The red from the skins makes them look lovely and pink - very pretty!

Of course, if you haven't seen it already, there's a recipe Maki posted recently:

Re: Radish ideas?

I made these last night and they are great! You really get a nice hint of garlic there at the end. Thanks so much for posting this. Now which recipe should I try next... :)
