Mr or Ms Bento

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get a Mr or MS Bento (Or similar item such as the Thermos Nissan?) in the UK without costing an arm and a leg? I have tried with no success to track one down. I'd really appreciate ant hints or tips on getting this. I'm not interested in joining Ebay and Paypal solely to get this item as I've been a member previously and been stung :0(

Thanks in advance for any help!

Re: Mr or Ms Bento

have you checked Amazon.com?

And isn't there somewhere over there that is good for this kind of thing? In London maybe?
sorry to not be more specific - I am in NY, NY - but Japan Centre come to mind

Re: Mr or Ms Bento

what about ebay? Depending on the seller, you might get a good deal.

Re: Mr or Ms Bento

I'm having the same trouble getting one to Australia. Ebay will ship to me for almost as much as the bento :(

Re: Mr or Ms Bento

I wonder *why* they are not available.

I feel your pain as I wanted one for Christmas and the best my boyfriend could do was a non-thermal tiered box from Japan Centre. It's beautiful, but I did break down and buy a thermal Zojirushi set from ebay as well. I am waiting for it to be shipped from Japan and it had better last for years as it was soooooo expensive. :( :(

Someone in the UK could make some ££ by importing them!!

Re: Mr or Ms Bento in UK/Europe

A big issue here is that Zojirushi, who also makes (imho) some of the best rice cookers, not to mention thermal water pots and more, does not seem to have a formal distribution system in Europe. So far they have concentrated all of their overseas marketing efforts in the US/North America. (Note, this is a typical pattern for Japanese companies. I think they are scared by the 'language thing' in Europe or something. Just about the only well-known Japanese company who actually tried the European market before tackling the US in recent memory is Mujirushi Ryohin (Muji).) Anyway, until Zojirushi does establish a formal presence here in Europe, we may be stuck having to import their goods, or buying them from small importers (usually retailers) and paying very high prices for them. People in the UK should try contacting Japan Centre (they are very nice people there) and seeing if they can think about importing thermal bento boxes - they are one of the major Japanese-stuff retailers in the UK after all.

Re: Mr or Ms Bento

Thanks for that Maki. I did contact Japan Centre about other items that were very simple such as vegetable cutters and they haven't been able to stock those so I don't hold much hope in getting thermal bento from them :0(

Re: Mr or Ms Bento

You can also try www.J-list.com their really good, and not much too costly. (Unless you're really poor like me then everything seems really expensive! X'| ) so yeah.

Re: Mr or Ms Bento

I was looking for one last summer, I eventually got a food flask from lakeland with compartments which suited me, except it's huge. They don't seem to have it anymore on their site, but they do have smaller ones without compartments for food. I supose you don't have time to wait until next picnic season. If your fussy about brand or need something very similar (as supposed to a little similar) then the only option I know of is to import one. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Re: Mr or Ms Bento

I'll wait at present to see what happens on this. I have just ordered a lock & lock lunch set from Australia, so I'm going to have to justify that to hubs before I buy anything else!!!

I live in the UK and have 2 Mr Bentos (one for hubby, one for me). I had them shipped to a friend in the US, who then mailed them on to me here in the UK. In exchange for her trouble, I sent her something from the UK that she couldn't get there. Worked a treat! Know anyone in the US?

Re: Mr or Ms Bento

I wasn't able to find one in the UK and bought mine in Japan (where it isn't called Mr Bento - just the Zojirushi 象印 name is used)

They cost over 5,000yen (£33) in shops like Tokyu Hands and department stores. Only thing is, I can't see the Mr Bentos on Tokyu Hands now, only the 'lady' versions like this:
http://www.hands-net.jp/goods/11684-
full range of bento items at Tokyu Hands here:
http://www.hands-net.jp/shop/disp/CSfDispListPage_001.jsp?action=&dispNo...

There IS someone reliable on ebay selling them
http://stores.shop.ebay.co.uk/Japan-Variety-Shop_Bento-Lunch-Box_W0QQ_fs...
The cost is £36 ($60) for the zojirushi silver box :
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Japnaese-Lunch-Box-Set-ZOJIRUSHI-Lunch-thermos-Silver_W0QQitemZ160348887833QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item255589db19&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1262&_trkparms=|293%3A2|294%3A30
postal charges are $18 on top of this
(To put this into context there's another vendor selling it from France and charging the same price plus a whoppping £23/$38 shipping)

I have bought jinbei from Japan-Variety-Shop but not any other kind of goods - goods are always exactly as described and sent for reasonable amounts that reflect the true price of shipping and sent quickly. A vendor I can personally recommend.

It could be that you will get the item for cheaper by buying from the USA instead, but even in Japan, these items aren't exactly inexpensive. Especially with the current exchange rates!
I've never regretted buying mine and believe it to be a good investment.

Maybe one day I'll be able to get my paws on one. Until then it's at the top of my wish list!

Re: Mr or Ms Bento

I just noticed that the Europe (France?) based online store called www.casabento.com has seriously expanded their Bento seletion to also include Zojirushi Mr and Ms and Mini Bento. http://casabento.com/cart/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=29&sort=20a&pa...

The website is in mostly in French (with some translation). The Zojirushis are not cheap (38-50 euro). Not sure about the shipping costs.

I have not ordered from here, so I can't tell you any more, but I just thought I would put that out there for anyone desperately looking for one of these...

Re: Mr or Ms Bento

I just bought this generic Korean Mr/Ms Bento lookalike from an Asian foodmarket round the corner from where I work. It was half price at ~$30NZ (~£14, US$20). I've been eyeing it up for a while at full price and had to grab it today when it was half. The bigger of the plastic containers has a divider in it, and the thing with the triangular "vitro" or whatever label is the padded bag it comes in.
So just keep looking, even in what you might think are unlikely places.
Try to ignore the miscellaneous office junk!

Re: Mr or Ms Bento

That triggered my memory.

I recently saw the popular alternative to Mr/Ms Bento Jars in Muji UK

http://www.muji.eu/pages/online.asp?V=1&Sec=11&Sub=92&PID=4454
It's the same sort of thing, three round containers in an insulated holder.
Costs £25 in the UK

Re: Mr or Ms Bento

My wife ordered a Ms.Bento from Newegg.ca last week. The price was great at $45.99 Canadian dollars with free shipping to Canada. Can't beat that price! Here's the Tiny URL:

Cheers!

Re: Mr or Ms Bento

i just ordered one from www.casabento.com and the shipping was £22 (I did order a bunch of other things too - to the value of £73 to make it worth the postage) and they reckon it should be with me shortly - I have ordered from them many times and have not been disapointed yet.

Re: Mr or Ms Bento

I looked around for a while for a Mr Zojirushi but could hardly find anyone who'd ship to Europe. I eventually got mine a while back from a Japanese vendor on Ebay who did, and received it without any problems (I did pay through Paypal). Since then I've noticed it's for sale at CasaBento.

I've used mine a bunch of times, it's great! Due to the shape, I often joke with my colleagues that I brought my nuclear waste container to work again :)
