I made my rice cooker explode...

For Christmas my boyfriend bought me a top of the line Zojirushi rice cooker(I told him not to spend that much) and...after about 4 tries I still haven't figured out how to use it...

I tried again last night and the unit just about literally exploded - gooey rice water was shooting out of the steam vent up to nearly a foot in the air, and it was really messy and disgusting.

I ended up giving the failed rice to some very happy dogs.

I just wanted to share my shame with you all...I just want to make people laugh...

The worst part is that I have no problem making perfect rice in my $15 pot, but give me a $500 technological wonder and I'm like the monkies in Space Odyessy.

Ouch!
I hope the unit isn't ruined beyond repair!

What model do you have? There might be someone here who can give you some simple directions, or we can perhaps find the manual for it online and figure it out.

(I started using my much simpler Sanyo cooker last Spring and have only just now got around to using some of the additional functions - like the yogurt button for sprouting rice with. I bet I'd stare alarmed like a bunny before headlights at some of the more technologically nifty models)

I think it is this one: http://www.zojirushi.com/ourproducts/ricecookers/np_htc.html
He should have known better and just got me one with a "Cake" setting }:(

I...have the manual I just...er... haha ^_^()

It looked ok. I was worried about the liquid getting into the vents on the bottom but I didn't see any when i looked. I am going to call the company at some point to see if they have any suggestions to make sure it will not break if I try to use it.

Re: I made my rice cooker explode...

I've taken a look at the manual and, boy, there are a lot of variables and things that need to be checked on your machine! There are all kinds of things that cause steam to burst out.
You may need to just have some patience and work through the troubleshooter guide to make sure none of the parts are blocked or soiled or damaged.
I'm sorry I can't give you a quick fix.
There's still hope that someone else with a zojirushi can give you some meaningful encouragement...
Do please let us know what happens. You never know, the advice could prove invaluable to someone else with an exploding rice cooker.

Re: I made my rice cooker explode...

Hey Yllsa,
Take the cooker to a small appliance repair shop and have them open it and clean the unit's interior out. It will take an hour or two of labor but will be worth it in the long run so you won't have to smell the scorched odor of rice starch and most will do a visual inspection for further damage while they have it open (too bad you don't live closer or I'd do it for you!). It took me a month of working with my Cuisinart rice cooker to learn its secret... use the steamer basket to cook rice! This version boiled over almost every time. Washed rice, unwashed, long, short grain, basmati, brown, add salt, add a touch of oil, you name it and I tried it. I finally got the wild hair to steam some dumplings while cooking a batch and installed the steaming basket on top of the rice chamber for the cooking cycle. The basket looks like it allows enough expansion area for the starch covered steam bubbles to break before they expand out of the cooking chamber and, I suspect, the grid of holes in the bottom of the steaming basket probably break a lot of the bubbles as they expand... None of this information is in the directions, just showing the manufacturers don't know it all.

Hope this helps keep some readers from cleaning up a huge mess

Bear has the first and third best fixes for your Z rice cooker. #2 would be *read the manual*. I would also make sure that you are using the measuring cup that comes with the cooker. That "cup" measurement is smaller than an 8 oz cup.

Re: I made my rice cooker explode...

Yeah, yeah yeah, my boyfriend said the same thing "read the instructions". I wish my unit had come with a steaming basket, for $500US you'd think it would...
