I suppose I am to introduce myself.

I am a tiny female Japanophile going into my last year of High School. I recently bought my first few bento boxes and plan to make myself yummy boxed lunches.

I have so many dietary restrictions it is horrible. Picky eater, plush Kosher, plus oral allergy syndrome (can't eat most raw fruits/veggies). I hope I can work around everything to make yummy and pretty bentos.

This year I want to learn to cook more. My mom always yells that she has to cook everything, so I want to help. I am afraid of the kitchen, and usually get grossed out by food preparation so bad I leave the room. But not for long.

Um. I like turtles, rainbows, stuffed animals, Hello Kitty, soft things, and clothes too. :) And smilie faces.

Oh you poor thing! I had never heard of oral allergy syndrome and just looked it up on Wikipedia. Sounds absolutely dreadful. Well, you are definitely going to have to learn how to cook, aren't you? Getting by on an apple and some nuts just isn't an option! You'll get plenty of advice here at Just Bento though.

Hello, fellow New Jersey-ian! :P Those allergy syndromes sound horrible! But a couple questions:
Have you ever tried blanching? You just cook your vegetables for about 30 seconds on boiling water. It cooks then just enough so that they aren't raw. (Ask your parents or doctor first!)
Heh, I'm really sorry, but Kosher is the certain food that is blessed by a rabbi (no, pork)right?
Well... I'll keep an eye out for some Kosher foods but I can't help you much there BUT I mean what's not to like about bento?1 I'm sure we can find recipes that you'll like!!!:P

Re: Hi there, from NJ!

Yep! I steam stuff sometimes. It kills all the things that makes my lips itchy. Anything cooked is okay.

Kosher is food that just doesn't include "non-kosher" stuff, and is usually watched by a Rabbi or other trained person. No blessings needed! Most foods are kosher, so it is okay. Just no porks or shelfishes (don't eat fish anyway yuck), or mixing dairy products with meat products. :)

Well first of all, welcome to the Just Bento community!

Second - what scares you about the kitchen, and what grosses you out?

Also - what foods to you like?

Re: Hi there, from NJ!

Thank you for making me feel so welcome!
Kitchens are scary in general. I am afraid of burning myself or ruining whatever I try to make. Raw meats and germy surfaces totally gross me out! I see where towels and knives and surfaces have been and yuck!

I'm in a phase where I like to try new things all the time. I had fish for the first time a couple months ago in sushi. I like pastas and salads and crackers and generally "tasty" things. I don't see the point in eating bland foods.

I've experimented with making my own rice balls and they've been yummy so far. I used kitchen spices until I found a veggie jar of rice spices at the fruit store!

Re: Hi there, from NJ!

I thought of a question!
Where can I enter a bento making contest? I highly doubt I could win, but I think it would be fun to enter. Is there a place out there in the bento-net that I can do this?

Hi! I'm new to Bento, too. So sorry you have to deal with so many allergies! I have a few (mushrooms and shellfish), but fortunately, they are easy to avoid for me. Very cool that you are learning how to cook for yourself in highschool! Looking forward to hearing more from you on Just Bento!
