Hi everyone,
Long-time reader and bento maker, first time forum resident! I live in London, UK (in West Kensington... hence the name) and have been making packed lunches in various forms for years... from the margarine sandwiches (mmm, delicious!) which accompanied my penniless gap year days to the bento boxes I pack for work now.
My work (I'm a barrister) involves a LOT of travelling around the south-east of the country, and every day is different - so I don't know whether I'll be eating my bento in the sun outside the visitor's centre at HMP Wayland, or sitting down with a load of papers in the robing room at Inner London Crown Court. I try to pack something different every day, but I'm sure we all have days when we reach for the familiar: my fall-back is rice, a soy egg, some kind of stir-fried vegetable and umeboshi plums (I'm addicted). I'm really looking forward to learning everyone's speed bento tips, as well as how to use my freezer more effectively in the bid to make-ahead!
Well, I think that's a long enough introduction. Hope to see you all around the forums sometime,
West Ken Girl.

Hi and welcome. I'm a fan of Rumpole, so I probably have completely the wrong idea of the life of a London barrister. Can't imagine him getting out his bento box down at Pomeroy's Wine Bar somehow.

My blog is Food and Shoes
I have to say, the food at El Vino's (the bar Pommeroy's is based on) is so dire for vegetarians I'd be sorely tempted to get my bento box out, but I'd get no end of funny looks :)
A hello back, from Oxford. I'm impressed: a barrister with a bento...who would have thought of that combination, but I like it! Am also a long-time bento maker, though mine are not always as artistically inspired. I'd like to know how to do that, in a time-efficient manner. But like you, can understand what it's like about funny looks when one takes out the bento box!
Ja,
JJ
I went to uni in Oxford, so I know it well! Is the little Asian supermarket on the bridge by the station still there? I bet that's handy for bento supplies!
I think I missed the "barristers are SERIOUS middle-aged men who definitely don't take pastel-coloured lunchboxes and bunny chopsticks to court" memo :)
I tend to "cheat" with artistic stuff, like having colourful sauce bottles and things to stuff in like that, rather than doing cutesy things with the food itself (no time!). I'm always really inspired by Biggie's "speed bento tips" over on lunchinabox.net.
