Hi :)

I'm Katy, I'm 23 and from Derbyshire in the north of England. I love to cook but have recently got a bit lazy as my work dictates how/when I can eat. I work at a cinema so I'm surrounded by snacks and 3/7 a week work evenings so I can't sit down for a hot meal very much.

And along comes Bento! Came across this site while looking for some alternatives to sandwiches to take to work. I swiftly wrote a shopping list and set to work :) I love the idea of packing some food that's not only healthy but filling and exciting at the same time. Unfortunatly my pocket also dictates how I eat :( I managed to get hold of two little boxes from Tesco (supermarket) in their Back to School section as this is about as good as I'm going to get at the moment (for starting out they're pretty good).

So anyway, enough rambling :D

xx

Hello Katymo

A very warm welcome to the forums.

If you haven't seen it already I'd like to recommend this thread from a fellow member who also packs bento for evening consumption.

Hi Katy, I'm Emma, 23 from Glasgow!
I've been looking at Bento stuff for a while now, and bought some things off Ebay last night, and went to Tesco today to get sushi rice and things like that. I never even thought to look at the back to school stuff when i was in there today to see if i could get a box!

I have 4 weeks left before i go back to uni, and want to take bento lunches with me, so i have 4 weeks to practice! I just hope my box i got gets here on time!
This is the one i bought: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400132881352&ssPage...

I've followed your blog as well, i'm going to start one soon once i'm a bit better with making everything!

Aww that one is adorable Emma! Mine's nothing like that, but I bought a square one with a rubber lid and the other is retangular with a snap shut lid (so a bit more room at the top). Both pink >.<

Thanks, i had my first attempt today. I made sushi rolls with tuna in the middle, and hot dog octos for lunch. Although the rice turned out awfully watery, so i don't know what went wrong. I washed it 4 times, and let it sit for a while before boiling it. Then added the rice vinegar and a bit of salt, let it cool then made the rolls. I still ate it though, but it wasn't that great.

I got emails today, saying my bento box has been dispatched! yay though it's coming from Hong Kong, so it will take a while to get here!

Hey what's up, I'm in Chesterfield too, and what a bloody wild goose chase you have to go on if you want to find Japanese ingredients here! Sainsbury's has the best selection locally but it's still not much. I'm not much of a bento-er, I came to Japanese cookery from the Just Hungry portion of the website, but I'm planning to make some bento snacks in the near future. When it comes to bento boxes I recommend ordering online- they will never have anything near decent round here.

Hi zoe!

I went to the big tesco today and their world food section (and 2 isles back from it at the end where the old el paso stuff is) has some bits. I got all the oils I needed along with teriyaki sauce, sushi rice and the like easily but I could do with a big bag of sushi rice rather than the little boxes they have in there.

Lass at work said something about an asian deli type shop in town near Yeomanns but I'm yet to check it out, have you been? :/

Hi Katymo.
If you've got any asian/chinese shops around you, you'll find all the stuff you need and they'll be much cheaper than tesco prices. Tesco's paella, rissotto or pudding (at a push) rice make good replacements for sushi rice if you run out.
