I am new to Bento, I found it while surfing the internet for healthy lunches for my 8 year old son. He came home upset because some kids had called him "fat". Now he is chunky, but he is honestly big boned! But he didn't get "chunky" until he started school. What changed? I went to work full-time and he started eating breakfast, lunch and snack at school! A quick review of the public school menu showed me that he was eating mostly high fat, carb rich meals. So this year I decided to start packing his lunch. He rebelled the first couple of weeks, but the last two days he has been coming into the kitchen the night before and asking me what he gets the next day! I have been easing him into better eating habits, he now doesn't throw a fit about fruit being in his lunch box and next week I am going to start on vegetables. Eventually, I hope to get organized enought to pack bento for me and my husband.

Welcome SissySue!
This is an interesting blog incidentally - What's For School Lunch, showing school lunches from various countries. The UK and the US have the least healthy looking lunches...

I had no idea school lunches were so ubiquitous! We don't have them here in New Zealand - if you want a bought lunch you just buy what you want from the school tuck shop or the corner dairy (convenience store) or wherever. When I was small a lunch monitor used to collect the money of the kids who were buying their lunch and take orders to the closest shop at about 9.30am, and a big box would get delivered at lunchtime with all the orders in it in paper bags. I used to be allowed bought lunch on Mondays because there was no fresh bread in the house for sandwiches; it would never have occurred to Mum to make anything else. And even my bought lunch was usually "two egg sandwiches, a doughnut, and a bag of chippies". All for 20c - it was a long time ago. Not very healthy either, now that I think of it.
*shock* Other countries serve their children REAL food for lunch!
I rarely bought lunch as a child. My parents usually packed me a sandwich and fruit, and as soon as I was old enough to understand what was IN those school lunches, I vowed never to eat them again.
SissySue, I'm so glad to hear your son is getting excited about his lunches! Welcome to Just Bento! Hopefully your son will come to love bento too.
My "standard" lunch from K-12 was a sandwich (either ham or PBJ), a piece of fruit (usually a banana), and an applesauce cup (maybe a fruit cup or pudding cup). Now that I'm an adult, sandwiches are pretty boring, but as a kid, there was nothing I loved more than a good peanut butter sandwich. Quick and healthy to pack, too (depending on what you put on them).
I must admit that I used to love school lunch in Japan...only had it for a year though, in sixth grade. I know I had school lunch in the U.S. for a year also, but I don't remember much about it. I do remember the spaghetti with meat sauce, and wondering why the spaghetti was chopped up so short ^_^

Up until High School, my lunches were mostly Mexican food or leftover donburi from eating out the night before. In HS, our family had financial issues because of medical bills, so I got the free school lunches which consisted of stuff I wouldn't feed to a hated enemy. On more than one occasion, my friends and I bit into a burger to find the interior to be green. For those of you who don't eat beef, it is supposed to be a brownish-grey inside of a hamburger. Just goes to show that you'll eat anything if you are really hungry.
(In defense of the burger, I must say that homemade burgers are really good, fast food sucks, and school lunch burgers should be composted. I'll probably post a recipe for an Open-faced Bison-burger* with goat-cheese and 'maters in the Non-Japanese recipes thread.)

I was given REAL food on school! It was not as good as home made food but it was good anyway :)
Parents had to pay for it, though. My mum refused to let me have lunch at school and she picked me up at lunch time to get me home and have lunch there. She got very tired of it (we had classes in the afternoon too so she had to take me back to school) and i told her that school food was good. And it was. Jiza and little brother had lunch at school every day since then.
