The Week 4 Challenge details are up! This week's focus is Bentos for Others. This may not apply to you if you are just making bentos for yourself, so feel free (as always) to focus on your own goals this week!

Week 4 officially starts on Monday, Feb. 2.

Also, if you have any tips and ideas for bentos for your kids, spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend, brother, sister, parent, etc...please share!

Re: Challenge Week 4 Talk

Does feeding freinds bento components count towards the challange? I think they'd find it strange if I brought them in boxes of their own. I tried to get our creature to eat bento, but he found fault with everything I made, threw it out, and bought something unhealthy elswhere. My dad would forget (although not on purpose), and my mum thinks bento=japanese=animerelated=evil (just a few false leaps there). So I really don't have anyone else I could make it for.

Re: Challenge Week 4 Talk

I think I'm accidentaly cheating with the challenges! Last week with the penny pinching? Happens to be the pay week I have to pay bond on my new house. This week? I just convinced The Boy yesterday to let me pack him a bento when he goes to uni. And now it's the challenge! My main convincer was him seeing my flickr photos and the rest of the pool and going "nomnomnom" at them. Plus, he's started to steal my mochi and my coconut rice crackers. He's up there with the flavours, just not the organisation so I'll make lunch, he'll sort dinner is the new goal.

This week I want to focus on vegetables a bit more, fill any and all gaps with something green (preferably) just to squish in some extra nutrients. Also I want to get started properly on going to the gym. The heat for the last week has completely derailed my routine but now the time as come!

Re: Challenge Week 4 Talk

One of my daughters likes having me make a bento for her as well so I printed out a year's worth of Just Bento Weekly Planners and had them put into a spiral notebook at work (we have one of those machines that do this, but a photocopy store could also do it for you) I asked her to decorate the cover and also to log onto Just Bento and help me pick out recipes. Fortunately she loves doing that type of thing and tomorrow we'll do some bento food shopping together.

Re: Challenge Week 4 Talk

Week 4 goals:

* sort bento boxes from what I really want to keep and what I am willing to give away
* identify bento boxes that suit caloric intake per meal
* pre-plan the bentos and other meals for 7 days ON PAPER OR AT LEAST ON THE PC
* refine mise en place according to meal plans
* make at least 4 bentos and photograph them
* post here and write a report on my adventures!

Re: Challenge Week 4 Talk

I do pack lunches for my husband some of the time, I used to pack them every day but I get tired of him being so picky (even though he says he's not) and he doesn't like bentos. He keeps finding things he doesn't like (this week it was bell peppers, and I had even made extra fajita style peppers for him before he told me) and doesn't he give me a whole lot of direction other than "delicious food." So other than him I don't really have anyone else to cook for, and I really don't want to step on any of the wives toes of the men I work with so I guess I will have to forgo that portion of the challenge.

Although I really do wish I could get my husband to eat more vegetables, so any tips anyone could offer I would greatly appreciate since his tastes are like a little kid's. So the current list I have of dislikes are: any foods that take too long to chew, cucumber, zucchini, bell peppers, cabbage, and squash.

So this week what I will focus on is the weight-loss, I know I have lost some weight (my pants and skirts are looser) but I don't know how much since I need to get batteries for the scale and I will get some this week. I will also try to make some onigiri this week, to have instead of my sandwiches on nights I have school.

Re: Challenge Week 4 Talk

Maybe my mother will need a little lunch this week, but normally she eats at work. And without her there is no one to make a bento for. So I will concentrate on finding more veggies I like (mh.. I think I'm rather picky) and make my bentos look better.

Go everyone!!!!!!!!! GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Challenge Week 4 Talk

My goals or this week are:

- Looks like The Guy will need a bento every day, will attempt to make them
- For myself, really work on the exercise part, keep the bentos healthy
- And unrelated to the challenge - post more of the recipes I have piled up!

Re: Challenge Week 4 Talk

Hm, well I have no one else to make bentos for... apart from this one guy in my class who adores asian food, but I can't say I'm particularly fond of him, so yes, I shan't be bothering with that. Did I also mention my mother gets super stroppy with me when I try to do something 'special' to my bentos (read: do anything other than tossing the leftovers into a box) because she thinks I'm doing it for other people's benefit? Yeahhhh.

I also gave up on the calorie counting since I'm worried I might be doing it wrong. Don't wanna be undereating because I overcalculated, or vice versa. So... just as much as is comfortable I guess.

Bento aims for this week will be much the same as last week's:
- 4-5 bentos (no special component requirement even!)
- keep bento making time in the morning short and eat breakfast!
- control my snacking habits
- exercise! exercise! exercise! I lost count of my stair flights AGAIN! Bum, I don't want to restart all over.
- start thinking about any specific foods I might want to pack myself for exam week (tips, anyone?)

And one more, unrelated to bentoing:
- STUDY!!! I am such a terrible procrastinator it's not even funny T_T

Re: Challenge Week 4 Talk

Here are my goals for the week:

1. Make 2-3 bentos this week.
2. Use ingredients or leftovers I already have before buying new food.
3. Evaluate my bentos and weight loss efforts.
4. Ask my fiance if he's interested in bentos.

Re: Challenge Week 4 Talk

Bentos during exams? If I did that in college I would have gone nuts. During exams there was always a lot of coffee brewing in my apartment and the occasional side of toast, an egg, or kimchi ramen (with a egg and kimchi on top if I wanted to get fancy) and that was about all the time I could manage to spare for food. I would not wish that schedule on anyone. But good luck on your exams and hopefully you will not rip your hair out in the process.

Re: Challenge Week 4 Talk

I was unkind to my stomach last week. I ate out. I ate oily things. Then my stomach stopped letting me eat much at all, so my primary goal this week is to make comforting food for my stomach. Argh, this IBS business is BS. But I am here to repent of my ways, and save $50US from eating out. (!)

So, goals, once again:
-Eat out once, not five times
-Make one lunch for mother - she usually eats out, but I figure she might appreciate something made for her when she gets back from her business trip
-Continue using up old foods
-Continue on the sugar crack-down - work in more carbs that are lower in sugar
-Plan out the week's lunches, work on mise en place
-Maybe strength-training three times a week as I'm no longer sick

Congratulations to everyone who made it so far, and worked to incorporate bento more into their lives! I'm kind of surprised that the challenge is half-over already! I used to bring lunches to school once or twice a week, but now it feels natural to start packing the lunches every day - and it's only been three weeks. It's kind of amazing. :)

Re: Challenge Week 4 Talk

I have simple goals this week, and I'm trying to take a page from our fearless leader in the process. They are:
*Try to make simple bentos that the Sun appreciates, so that we have less bring back of uneaten food. At least for him simple is better.
*Try to have at least one vegetarian bento per week, hopefully one day having more days or maybe a vegan day too.
*Use up the stuff! I made good use of frozen crab, ground chicken and beef in my fridge making dumpling fillings and freezing it, so I can wrap fresh dumplings at will. I must keep buying produce to complement what's at home.
*get moving more, my lunch pal and I walk after lunch, but my Curves membership is languishing! I need to get it started.
*Try to take pictures, and learn more about my camera.

Re: Challenge Week 4 Talk

First off, can I just ask where week 3 went?! the last few weeks are a like blurry spot in my mind - I even had to go and physically count the weeks before I believed that there hadn't been a counting error! :)

As for this week's challenges, my new interest in bentos convinced a friend of mine to go buy some boxes and start bringing her own lunch to work. She's already loving the money its saving her. Can I count this towards making bentos for other people? :)
I haven't done any exercise this month apart from all the walking I do to get into work and get around town and things. But that is a step up from how I am when I'm at home in Canada and drive everywhere, so I guess its something. And its only 2 weeks left until I need to be seen in a bikini again, so I think its a little late for any major weight losses! :) (at this point, I'm just craving the sunshine & warm weather!).
Finally, I fell off the photo wagon last week, so this week I need to remember to actually take photos of the lunches I make!

good luck everyone!

Re: Challenge Week 4 Talk

Heh, because I mentioned what the challenge for the week is, my partner says I can make more bento for him! Go Team Us! He even offered to help cook his own lunch foods, which he has never done before!

Most of the evenings this week are really busy, so for the first time ever I'm going to try to make bento in the morning. I'll make my beau's before he goes to sleep, and either completely make or finish mine in the morning. Day 1: so far, so good! No bento for beau, however, as I just got the OK last night at 11... when we had to be up at 5:30....

I have plans for 5 bento and will take pictures, but beau's bento will be more of a "seat of my pants" thing, as I am a new vegan and he is omni.

Re: Challenge Week 4 Talk

I'm just going to concentrate on myself as my son doesn't eat at college (he has this teenage not eating in public thing going on) and my husband eats at home when he gets in at lunchtime (he's a postman so finishes much earlier than I do).

I have been slacking all weeks so far with only a couple, maybe 3 bentos each week. Admittedly it's been due to me having to travel for work and I don't like cold bentos so have packed stuff on days I know I have the office microwave at my disposal. The rest of the time a box of veg sticks and cream cheese has been all I could think of - and no one wants to see pics of those!

Re: Challenge Week 4 Talk

This week's challenge is easy for me, as I usually make my teen daughter a bento lunch every day. It's making them for myself that's more of a challenge. I work mostly from home, so the need is not great. I did make them for myself the first two weeks and it was great. I have to get back to doing that again.

I can totally relate to guarding your bento stash! I've gotten discouraged from making specific bento recipes as a weeks worth of them often get wolfed down in one sitting by hungry teens if I'm not looking! So I think I'm going to hid them in the back of the freezer and see if that works.

I did make a big batch of frozen rice packets and those were great! It really helped the bento making in the morning go more smoothly. So I'll expand that to the rest of the bento food, if it's frozen it's too usually too much trouble for the marauding hoards to bother with, lol.

I've not done too much though on week 4 as I had some minor surgery, and have been in bed for part of the week. Feeling better now though, so will try to get back on track.
