Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Bento fans all over the world know about Bento&co. Based in Kyoto, Japan, Bento&co sells only bento boxes and related products, and their ever-evolving catalog features items reflecting the best of Japanese bento box design, from cute to modern-minimalist to traditional. It’s also one of the few online stores catering to the international market that carries real Japanese wood and stainless steel bento boxes. All the products they carry are made in Japan, with the exception of some bento accessories that are designed in Japan and manufactured in China.

And, this is the item they’re giving away. It’s the impossibly cute Kokeshi Bento box! I understand that these have been flying off their shelves, so I’m really glad that we can give away one right here on JustBento. One lucky winner will win their choice of one of the Kokeshi Bento boxes pictured below.

bentoco-kokeshibento-all.jpg

A kokeshi is a traditional Japanese doll made of turned wood. They originated in the northern parts of Honshuu, the main island in Japan, but nowadays you see them sold everywhere in Japan. Japanese people love kokeshi; they’re so iconic that Nintendo took their inspiration for the Mii avatars used in Wii games from the kokeshi form.

The Kokeshi Bento box is made to look like a kokeshi doll, but is made of practical, microwave-safe plastic (remove the inner lids before microwaving). The box has three main parts: two stacking round layers for your regular bento food with leakproof lids, plus a small bowl that can be used for soup, fruit, cereal, and so on. (Note that the bowl is not water-tight; the idea is to bring along a packet of instant soup or your own vegetable soup concentrate, and to add hot water in the bowl with the soup mix when you’re ready to eat.) The bowl inverts on top of the stack to form the head of each kokeshi character, and a bento band is included to hold things together.

The total capacity of the box is 640ml - 200ml for each stacking tier, and 240ml for the bowl. It’s suitable for adults with small appetites.

my fave bento is onigiri! i make it for the daycare too. about two dozen. . .

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Lately, my favorite lunch food to make is my own version of curry on top of a bed of brown rice or mixed together with noodles. It's easy for me to make because it's just a mixture of whatever vegetables are in the fridge or freezer that I can toss into a pan. It's sort of a lazy woman's curry, but it's delicious, nutritious, and filling.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite thing to take for bento lunch are miso marinated eggs. Yum!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento/lunch food... Pretty much anything with nori on it, though if that's excluded, that raw asparagus salad you introduced me to was absolutely divine.

Those kokeshi bento are So. Adorable.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I don't do it very often, but my FAVORITE bento is leftover curry rice. I don't really have a recipe, because I always put something different in it - usually whatever odd veggies are in the fridge gets prepared along with meat if I have it and then sauced well with instant curry cubes, although I add garlic and fresh herbs to it as well.

These are THE cutest bento containers I think I've ever seen. I'm reminded of little leggo guys. Since I doubt I'll win anything, I'll have to start saving my pennies to order one of these fun characters. Talk about a lunch to make you smile!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Peanut butter balls!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento food is hamburger patty and boiled rice with a side of veggies. I used to get that in my lunchbox in school all the time, and my appreciation for it has carried over into adulthood.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My 9 year old daughter and I have recently started making bentos together. It's been a great way to do something together. Our favorite so far was one that had salad with cutout shapes in the meat and cheese. We made radishes that looked like little mushrooms and sandwiches that we cut into different shapes. Then we made dessert with a rice ball with raisins and cinnamon. It was a lot of fun. I have to admit, it took us an hour to make 6 of them for our family...but it was fun and by far our favorite bento to date. We have gotten some great ideas from everyone's responses on here. The bento box is cute but even if we didn't win the giveaway, well the ideas are wonderful!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love anything with konnyaku. YUM!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

For bento boxes, I enjoy pretty simple fare: miso soups on cold days, salads and fruits on hot days, and rice or noodles with teriyaki anything on any day! :) My latest love: bibimbap!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love bentos! To date, I have lost 67 pounds from taking bento lunches to work, and eating mostly Japanese food. My favorite bento is Maki's miso ball, for miso soup with crushed toasted sesame seeds and wakame seaweed, with edemame and grape tomatos on the side, and fruit for dessert. Yummmm!!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Brown rice, cold salmon (cooked any way), tomato, and some kind of green vege! It's become an addiction...

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento is basically leftovers from the night before. :-)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

it seems silly to repeat, but I really do enjoy onigiri with salmon. or shrimp tempura! thank you for the opportunity to win that super-kawaii kokeshi bento box =^_^=

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Yaki Onigiri - I usually buy Baked Yaki Onigiri in the frozen food section. It is great because it is super practical and delicious (yum!).

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

karaage chicken and rice and cucumbers

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Onigiri with mixed fillings. Yummm it makes my stomach growl just thinking about it.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento is anything with chicken and rice. I have tried several recipes for chicken and my favorite is Maki's sweet sour red wine vinegar chicken. I usually eat it with rice, edamame, and steamed green beans.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love the rolled up egg! it's so fluffy and yummy, and when it has some cilantro or peppers....YUM!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

in truth, my favorite is still teh steamed white rice! it's the best!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

i love onigiri!! though other favorites are cherry tomatoes & seaweed salad. yum!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I'll have to say it's onigiri!! I just love it, it is easy and quick to prepare but the best part is the taste and
it can be as versatile as you want it to be @.@

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

my favorite has to be octopus-shaped hot dogs with rice and tamagoyaki! mmm :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Wowie zowie, impossibly cute is right, I need one of these boxes! I think since I almost always take leftovers, my fave bentos are the ones where I make something special just for the bento - onigiri with umeboshi, miso-seasoned mushrooms, tea eggs, etc. And variety - if I can have 4 differently prepared veg, with some protein and a little carb, I'm a happy camper!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Fried rice or fried noodles with a side of vegetables is my favourite. Especially because I can eat them even if it's not heated up!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Tamagoyaki. It was the first food I learned how to cook (I didn't know how to cook before bentos.)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento is a small salad with raw mushrooms and lettuce, marinated chicken (http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/very-easy-marinate...), and leftover mujadarra (http://kalynskitchen.blogspot.com/2010/06/recipe-for-mujadarra-middle-ea...), a rice and lentil dish. Yum!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

KAWAII! The only Japanese bento I have made for myself yet is inarizushi. I loved it! Probably the best take-away lunch I've ever had. It beats PB&J by a long shot.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento is two of Maki's miso marinated eggs, a baked Japanese sweet potato, an umeboshi onigiri, steamed spinach with sesame oil and soy sauce, and a seasonal fruit (my favorite is mango). So yummy.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I'm hooked on the carrot kinpira recipe I got from your website. It tastes great on its own as a side, or with rice or other veggies.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Oh, these are AMAZING. :D

My favourite bento food ... this is tricky, but I really, really love omraisu-- usually my-style, which is leftovers from yesterday's meal, mixed with rice (freezer staple) and sauce (the food's sauce if available, ketchup in a pinch or when I feel like having Japanese-style omraisu.

It's pretty, it tastes great warm or cold, keeps reasonably well for something made with eggs, and doesn't take much time to do.
I usually put some greens into another tier or box-- cherry tomatoes, salad, leftover greens that wouldn't go well in the rice mixture itself; whatever I've got handy. :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Tri-color rice!!! I usually do the traditional green bean, eggs, and ground meat, but sometimes I get creative and have different colors on my rice. It is always so cheerful when you see the cute stripes on your rice!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Oddly, my favorite is actually the rice. But this is because I play with it a lot. Sometimes I use miso soup instead of water to prepare the rice, or I'll stir in some egg and bonito shortly before the rice is done. Very rarely is my rice just pure white.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

We are super new to this (and learning from you!) so far we like edamame in its shell and lots of rice with veggies.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Veggies (different colors) and a small sandwich...turkey or pb&j with some fruit!!!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favourite bento food is Beef Soboro (your recipe, actually). I like to pack it with plain onigiri topped with black sesame seeds, and a vegetable salad. In a box like these ones, with a bowl included, I round out my bento with miso soup. Yummo!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Onigiri (no filling) and steamed veggies. How exciting, huh? But I love it.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento food is salad. I like a simple salad, just greens and tomato and a little dressing. Yum! It's easy, fast, healthy, and can fit in a bento box nicely.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I <3 your Miso Marinated Pork! It has such intense flavour that I can quite happily eat it with plain rice and nothing else. The recipe is so simple to and easy that we actually eat pork now when it hasn't ever really been on the menu before :-)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I really enjoy having a cold mashed potato inside my bento! With green beans and corn inside! It is a fun and filling side dish that I love! I usually mold them in little balls, so it is visually appealling as well!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I'm a sucker for sandwiches - when I pack bento I use separate containers for the sandwich toppings so the bread doesn't get soggy. -- seattle, wa

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Actually my favourite bento food is a ham and cheese sandwich.
It sounds boring... but I love how versatile it is... you can change around the types of ham or cheese, change the seasonings, change what you put inside... so really something basic can come out a million different ways~ and every time I eat it it's totally satisfying~

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite lunch is salad. Any variety of lettuce salad :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

mmm my fav bento...rice, chicken, brocolli, some nice sauce, and fruit to follow
Kyla

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I can't even, these are too adorable! My favorite bento is anything that uses up food I have or leftovers, but, really I love おにぎり. I don't even really care which kind, I just adore eating them.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Hello :]
I usually fill my bento with rice, some sort of veggies (raw, stirfries, or veggie pancakes), and some kind of protein. This is one of my favorites -- easy Char Sui. I learned cooking this rom Runnyrunny999 on youtube. Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/user/runnyrunny999#p/u/15/6Sq68TYx8iI

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento items are fresh fruit and chicken skewers, the one provided on this site.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favourite thing in a lunch is fresh fruit - strawberries or raspberries from local farms especially!
